Steve White coming to Malaysia
American Born, Steve White singles and plays acoustic blues, slide, harmonica and all of it with the whole of his heart. His musical influences vary from classical Indian to American show tunes, but blues is closest to his soul.
Steve is very much the ultimate self-contained band, a tornado of synchronous polyrhythms lubricated with vicious swamp funk, and propelled by serpentines slides and undulations. Earthly, rural idioms are infused with a wordly sophistication and auto-orchestrated with masterful, wary lyrics, engaging vocals, compelling footwork, and Mouth harp playing that defies the presumed limitations of a neck brace holder.
He has made countless appearances and tours in clubs, festivals, concerts, radio and television in the United States, Mexico and Europe. Steve has been representing Taylor Guitars and AER Amplifiers in numerous events such as the NAMM show in Los Angeles, and the Music Messe in Frankfurt. He is featured in Taylor's new ES pickup system DVD and performs for AER in Central Europe.

It's most impressive to see White performing live, to experience him slapping (!) his alternating base with his virtuously acting right hand, to hear him perform folk-blues harmonies with incredible intensity and produce a bass-drum groove with his feet on his custom made stomp-box..." Gregor Hilden, Akustik Guitar Magazine
You can catch him in The Guitar Store Desa Sri Hartamas at our school Dept on the 2nd of December 2005 at 3pm. Please call for reservation.
Steve White is also performing at the following events.

1. 1st of Dec 9pm: Performance at Cottage Club in conjunction with Penang Jazz Festival
2. 2nd of Dec 3pm: Workshop at TGS Desa Sri Hartamas.
3. 2nd of Dec 9pm: Friends of AER at Alexis Bistro, Jln Ampang KL.
4. 3rd of Dec 2pm: Workshop at Sommerz @ Heritage, Penang
5. 3rd of Dec 10pm: Perform at Bayview Beach Resort Gardens
6. 4th of Dec 8.30pm: Perform at Akademi Seni Kebangsaan Concert Hall, KL.

in what kind of country do you actually forbid ppl to play music ?!? that's so scary. It strongly reminds me of communist-russia, nazi-germany and other south american dictatures... sad.gif and one day, revolution will rise...

There'a topic in Movies & Music sub-forum but it seems that there isn't any confirmation yet. sad.gif

If so I wanna watch man! They're bloody amazing live! Apparently he has replaces some of his Rio Grande and SD pickups with BKPs already, if he's using those guitars, I'm definitely there to witness his new tone! thumbup.gif

The tickets are pretty darn expensive if you ask me (RM 30 per day siot). Cosmic Funk Express alrdy promised they gonna do it clinic style on their show which definately worth the money. Apart from Deja Voodoo Spells, I dunno about others how they gonna make your RM30 worth it. laugh.gif

To Everyone,

I would like to invite you to the most eagerly awaited concert of year 2006. A concert by the band Cre8ive led by singing evangelist, David Evans and ex-Newsboys lead singer John James that will not only be a life changing experience but will bring you to another level of worship.

David Evans:
For the past 18 years, he has significantly contributed in influencing the development of Australian contemporary praise and worship through ministries such as Hillsong, Planet Shakers and Youth Alive.

John James:
Co-founder and former lead singer of the world's biggest Christian Band - Newsboys

This concert will be held on the 10th and 15th of January 2006 at Glad Tidings Sunway at 7:30pm. Admission is free!

For more information, check out the The Concert Brochure or call us at 03-56339996.

How Ironic that we are having an AWSOME discussion about Black Metal and advertising for a Christian music group.

Too bad it's in January and not in March/April...... Otherwise could bring my Zakk Wylde Epi in the Coffin Case.....

Oh yeah..... my new years resolution? Be more metal then ever...

Starring

Craig Pesco as Freddie Mercury

Travis Hair as Brian May

Brett Millican as Roger Taylor

Sean Nolan as John Deacon

Craig Pesco first stepped out on stage as Freddie Mercury after winning the job over 80 other hopefuls, who came to the audition for the chance to play Queen's charismatic front man. It turned out to be a role he was born to play. Since Pesco and guitarist, Colin Hill, formed Queen - It's a Kinda Magic in England in 1997, the group has received critical acclaim everywhere. They were the first Queen tribute to play on the same bill as Queen guitarist, Brian May, who described the band as "brilliant".

From the first moment that Pesco walks out on stage

Fort Minor - I hate side Projects. How come that Mike feller can only rhyme / talk (whatever) in only one style? Isn't there suppose to be at least a minimal amount of variation? I dunno nuthin bout hip hop, but its stale.

Hi to all you budding music producers.

I will be organising a music producers gathering in Sri Hartamas on Saturday the 17th of June at 3pm at Groove Syndicate DJ Workstation.

The reason for the gathering is for budding/amatuer/professional music producers in KL to share their music, opinions, skills, advice, experience and just to basically grow their network with other musicians. Even if you are not one of the above, you can join in to gain more knowledge on music production. Admission is RM50 for 3 hours studio session.

There will be two recording label representatives at the gethering to help answer your questions on royalties, label deals, licensing, production, manufacturing, etc.

For more info and to book your place at the gethering, please email or PM me.

Cheers

Hahaha... No it is NO horror musical! It's a fairytale-themed musical! Sigh... I don't know, there are some people that commented about the doll that looks "scary"... But I totally adore it, isn't it just CUTE? Lolx.

It's on for two days... Saturday (29th July), 8:00pm AND Sunday (30th July) 3:00pm.

DO COME SUPPORT!

you ppl nvr heard of it? its been going on for ages!!! in kuching sarawak. its an international music fest of 3 days where diff musicians all around the world come to perform. daytime would be workshops and night will be partying!!! its really cool. the main theme would be traditional music, but alot of artists add diff things but keeping the main theme. i remember once from germany they even had a scratch DJ. malaysian traditional music would be boring as usual but those fusion ones from other countries are awesome. country music is in too! banjo shredding stuff. i thought over the years its been shown on TV too. even national geographic did come to cover the event(and other huge mags too). this year its going to be on 8,9, 10 july. i think tics are rm60 a day(including workshops)...not too sure as it was around that price last year

i cant be going this year as i have to fly off to kl. uni starts at such a sh*tty timing. $%^&

i hope this is the right thread, redirect me plz if im wrong.

I am currently in munich and was wondering:

To all you rockers out there: Would you attend a concert (old shcool 70s 80s rock, blues, psychadelic, gothic, funk, soul) although u wont understand a single word their saying? Is the text important when you guys listen to todays pop/rock songs?

I was just wondering if a german band (i assume maybe 90% malaysians don't know german?) would get an audience if they were to tour malaysia. Don't have to make it big or anything, just gather maybe a mediocre fan base, maybe earn some extra money.

What are your opinions? Just be direct. Will post some samples too after getting the green light from the composer.

FOURPLAY - Live at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, KLCC.

Quoted from http://alldatjazz.com/item/805
QUOTE
Some might think that with a band name such as Fourplay, it must have an impish connotation when the band chose the name but it's far from it. It might be used by some to set certain moods but let's not open that door.

They came together on part of Bob James' Grand Piano Canyon album in 1991. Incidentally, that was the same year, their self-titled debut album was launched.

The band that has performed at numerous jazz festival worldwide and has over 10 albums will be in town. This year alone, they have performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival with Herbie Hancock, the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival, and the 14th Annual Capital Jazzfest, just to name a few.

If you have not heard of this group before, then I suggest you get some friends together and go catch this band 'live'.

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) begins its new 06/07 season with two sensational concerts by renowned jazz group, Fourplay. The group comprises four accomplished performing artists, namely Bob James (keyboard), Nathan East (bass), Larry Carlton (guitar) and Harvey Mason (drums), each of whom who have received an overwhelming number of industry accolades.

Under the Jazz & World Music Series, the group's performances are scheduled on Tuesday, 15 August 06 and Wednesday, 16 August 06 at 8.30 p.m.

Fourplay's recordings combine elements of R&B, pop, rock, blues, classical and jazz. The group has garnered a legion of fans that spans all geographical, ethnic, and musical boundaries. Its first release, 'Fourplay', and the follow-up, 'Between the Sheets', have respectively received global platinum and gold RIAA certification. Both albums have also reached the number one spot on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Chart, with the debut CD reigning for a record-setting 33 weeks.

The group's third album, 'Elixir', received both gold and number one chart status, as well as being named Best Contemporary Jazz Album in the Jazziz Readers Poll. This album also received the Album of the Year Award at the Soul Train Awards.

Following these successes, Fourplay has since released 'Four', 'The Best Of', a Christmas album entitled 'Snowbound' and 'Yes, Please!' (which received a Grammy nomination in 2000). The Jazztrax also honored Album of the Year 2002 for 'Heartfelt'. In 2004, the release of their Grammy nominated album, 'Journey', charted at number two.

Fourplay has recently completed their tenth studio album entitled 'X' to be released on 8 August 06. Each of its members contributed two songs to this new release, together with Steve Winwood's composition, featuring the unmistakable vocals of Michael McDonald. This album offers another perspective in how Fourplay continues to grow, writing collectively, with a cohesive rhythm section.

Be tantalised with the performances by Fourplay, an unmissable treat for true jazz and world music lovers, only at DFP!

Most probably Tuesday...doesn't matter who's coming who's not, the biggest priority is to get the ticket first. I heard that the ticket might have been sold out. If that's the case, that would be double dissapoinment for August alone sad.gif

JAZZ & WORLD MUSIC

An Evening With...
Chick Corea & Gary Burton Duets
A restlessly creative spirit, Chick Corea, a Grammy Award-winning pianist-composer-bandleader, continues to explore and generate new material for a number of different vehicles, including his dynamic Elektric Band and his flamenco-flavoured Touchstone band. Gary Burton, an innovator on the vibraphone and mentor to young musical talent, is a noted collaborator with Chick Corea with whom he has made several recordings, including the Grammy winning disc "Like Minds." Relish the privilege of being with not one but two of the pioneers as they take you through their inimitable brand of jazz.
I still want Fourplay! sad.gif

Or were you being sacarstic? tongue.gif

Since I'm gonna miss the Fourplay (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO) concert, I think this would be a nice consolation prize. smile.gif

Tommy Emmanuel, Oct23 in Singapore, S$68, S$48, S$38, S$28.
10 days after Slayer sad.gif

Phenomenal guitarist takes centerstage in an all-out concert. A Tommy Emmanuel concert is like no other-- he plays sizzling melodies, fills in the rhythm section and weaves in a thumping bass - all on his own on a single guitar!

Tommy's illustrious 40-year career has set sales records that have yet to be broken and performed with hundreds of musical legends including Chet Atkins, Eric Clapton, Sir George Martin, Hank Marvin, Joe Walsh and Stevie Wonder.

Voted "Most Popular Guitarist" by Rolling Stone Magazine, he has earned four Platinum and Gold albums. His album "The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World" was nominated for a Grammy award. Mo Awards has named him "Entertainer of the Year" for his outstanding concerts across the world.

i was thinking about that too. but then he might be a superb player but never shows off. remember john5 when he was in marilyn manson? there wasnt much of him back then but with his solo album it just blew people's brains out.

i guess we could ask him more on songwriting or coming up with riffs rather than solos.

edit: maybe its not too bad

He's one of the judges for the coming Asian Beat Grand Final at Sunway Lagoon on the 10th of March, 7:00 PM. Entrance ticket for this event costs RM38 each.

He will be conducting a guitar clinic at Royale Bintang Damansara on the 11th of March, 3:00 PM. Not sure how to get the entry pass. For the one in Penang, we will have to buy stuffs cost RM20 or above at Music World (Yamaha dealer) to get the pass.

Yamaha is the main organiser for his whole trip to Malaysia, not sure which dealers did they pass it on to handle the guitar clinics.

notthatbalai art festival '07 (21st July - 5th August 2007)

SAMA-SAMA

CALL FOR ENTRIES!!!

INTRODUCTION

notthatbalai [notthatbalai website]

An event which is organised jointly by Lost Generation Space and a group of individuals of diverse art disciplines and social backgrounds who are passionate in arts and cultures.

Embodying the spirit of sharing, creating, and giving, this festival will go on for 16 days from 21st july to 5th August 2007. notthatbalai Art Festival has the opportunity to work in different venues and getting the chance to work with other indiviuals and art groups. This art festival will consist of visual arts, music and performance, film screenings and flea market food stalls.

THEME

SAMA-SAMA

Relationship of artist, society and living environment as a whole strongly reflected the theme "SAMA-SAMA". Nowadays, our living society is full of imbalance power, natural disaster, and injustice of political parties. Art is the visula way of expression that address human's deepest feeling. it is showing aesthetical values, mediates certain information to the observer, increase understanding, propose changes and create hopes. The artworks might be inspired by happenings in society anbd surrounding environments and vice versa, it is an open door for the members of society to perceive the world either critically or harmoniously. Artworks that are deconstructive, contradict, ambiguous, inspiring, soul strring, come straight to the point and implies culture and ethnic identification would be the biggest approach of notthatbalai art festival 2007.

Furthermore, we hope to cross the boundaries of arts in different fields, collective, ages, status, relations and build up a network in order to create a platform that we can "SAMA-SAMA" exchange and share thoughts, help and link everyone.

VENUE

Lost Generation Space, Street along Central Market, Central Market Annex, SICKL, Seksan Gallery, gudang (workshop), etc.

Looks like I have to go. Ruben wants to send his classical guitar there (with a Steve Vai wannabe vine inlays painted on), but needs me to send it there as he is working there..... so I have to hide my face when I send it in. tongue.gif

But need to send my LP-100 for a pickup height readjustment and screw change, so yeah...... will be there at around 4.30 if anyone wants to meet up.

you cant be serious about sending a guitar in for pickup height adjustment?
are you?

all you need is a screwdriver and a ruler tongue.gif

and since its EMGs, there is no hard rule on how high or low the pickup should be.
you can set it as close as possible if you want, since they're actives.
or set it very low, for a less hotter sound.

Well, one of the screws are drilled out REALLY bad..... very hard to get it out with conventional screwdrivers..... only a powered one.
Sure, I can go to a hardware store, but heck, I can get it done for free. tongue.gif

Plus, just long time since I got it checked.... And again..... see if he can swap the volume and tone knobs like how it SHOULD be done!

first woh fatt installed the pickups the other way around...
now the knobs are reversed too?

and which screw is drilled out?
1 of the 2 screws holding the pickup? or holding the humbucker ring?

if its the pickup one, you can take it out easily from the underside.

If my friend is going to ponteng our last class (4-5pm) with me, then he should be able to drop me at the LRT station.

But right... Read earlier that you want to reach there by 4pm. My class finished at 4pm. So how? If you wanna go early then it's alright, I can go myself no problem, don't wanna trouble you always. Hehe. smile.gif

Blackdawn...... sweat.gif

Anyway, thanks guys. It's actually a small college eventlar, my friend initially participated the event with his classmates, but the guitarist and drummer can't make it last minute, so I filled in. blush.gif The other bands were okay, although most of them are younger than us... I feel old.

And the story behind Half Boiled Eggs lol! We were having lunch at a mamak and our vocalist wasn't pleased when our friend/manager ate half boiled eggs. Later during audition, we were asked for a name, and that fella suggested half boiled eggs. sweat.gif sweat.gif

Haha thanks... it was a small eventlar. Next time got bigger event I will post. laugh.gif

It's just a college musical competition anyway, opened to all Taylor's College students. Most of them are bands although there were a few duets and solo singers. There was a solo singer who did really, really well but she didn't win anything. sad.gif

BOSS is set to launch its latest range of BOSS compacts this 26th May 2007 at KL Jam Asia in a way that all you, stompbox addicts and guitar heroes out there know best, music. With an exclusive performance by Asian Beat Runners-Up 2007, Ocean of Fire (www.myspace.com/oceanoffire1) or go to YouTube and search them up, this evening looks set to be an exciting one.

Also, there will be the entire range of BOSS pedals readily available for you guys to stomp it out but of course, please bring your own guitar. Yes guys! If you wanna witness some Virtuosity, do not miss CFE!
Don't worry if you're not into that kinda genre, their music can appeal to everyone!

I still prefer Zack's older 'more overdriven' tone though, very much alike Eric Johnson. Now his gain is sooooo low it's practically clean tone so it doesn't sound as 'fluid' as before, but still fluid nonetheless!

I never heard of his old tone but the later tone is not too bad, perhaps he wants to be able to mellow down for a jazz-like feel?

That's a really sweet axe man. Should be around RM2.5k i think. If only it had 24 frets, it would be the ULTIMATE guitar (no pun intended in relation to UG). LOL.

I really wonder why they don't put 24 frets into it...

Could it be because of the wood?

22 frets have better articulation and harmonics and resonance because the octave harmonic is placed directly in the centre pickup(if you have a middle single coil pickup) or just in the centre where you pick thus allowing for a richer tone and easier to pull of harmonics both artificial or natural

also note that guitars have to be made to a particular set scale. . . if 24 frets the body have to be smaller etc etc. . . many factors to be put into the building of the guitar. . . lack of wood/ proper wood balance etc etc

^ yea, it's not as simple as just chucking a 24 fret neck in there. They could put a 24 fret neck on the S series, but they would have to move the bridge a tad closer to keep the same scale length.

There is reason to be hopeful though. Ibanez is currently working with Herman Li on creating a new S series guitar with 24 frets and all, built to his specifications. Should be out around the beginning of next year. Lets just keep our fingers crossed and hope it doesn't cost a gazzillion dollars when it comes out. tongue.gif

the only factor is the neck pickup location, where it would have to be pushed closer to the bridge, thereby it wont sound as nice as it should.

uhhh no.
the bridge doesnt go anywhere.
go think about that for a sec.

only the neck pickup, refer to above.

Yay... shameless promotion time. tongue.gif

Our band would be covering 4 songs and, if you don't mind putting up with simple mainstream stuff (When I say simple, I don't mean EQ777-Dream-Theater-Simple-stuff lolxx laugh.gif ), do drop by! There would be 2 other bands performing while most of the Musical Night would probably filled with solo singers and classical music.

If you interested in coming, drop me a PM or something for tickets.

G3 came down for RentakAsia in 2001, and I don't think they will come back again. In 2001, Eric Johnson played, Steve Vai played, and Satriani was on stage when the cops came and told the officials to close the event down, Satriani was furious that he threw the guitar to his guitar tech and walked off. Sadly, I never got to see G3 perform. And mind you, this was like 3 something in the morning, and I was annoyed and disappointed.

Ya, I heard about that incident. I guess they wont bother coming back to Malaysia anymore. But I think the organizers have to take some of the blame, I heard there were lots of delays in each item, causing the show to drag on beyond the 12am limit.

yeah... there's a reason why events are usually required to wrap up by midnight, guess the authorities don't want having large groups of people hanging out together in the wee hours... kinda creates a security/safety/public order situation.

Generally I think coppers don't mind if it drags a bit but until 3am for a concert is pretty extreme...

But IMO, Jethro Tull was a class act that night, they should've just scrapped the other acts, I mean they should've give priority to the stars of the night, they should've just apologized to the other acts. But the thing is when you wanna organize and event like this with Professional Recording artists, those buggers always like to bring their own equipment, that's the thing that causes delays, they'll drag in everything, from Drumkits, to Fullstacks. Sometimes can't really blame the organizers also. But all I can say it, the organizers should've cut down on the amount of performing bands.

"The Awakening"
- GruvAvénue "The Awakening" Live Concert in The Actors Studio, Bangsar-
Once in awhile in the musical incubator of the downtown club scene, a truly musically sophisticated work with broad appeal emerges as if from nowhere. The truth, of course, is that these gems are the results of years of hard work, artistic development and unique musical vision: all these crystallize the release of self-titled debut album " GruvAvénue" in 2005.

Formally known as "Black Machine", GruvAvénue exploded into the KL music scene with its inaugural performance in The Actors Studio, Plaza Putra in 2001. The band continued to make special appearances at jazz clubs such as the legendary No Black Tie, Alexis Wine Bar & Bistro, Jazz Bar @ The Orange, Bangkok Jazz, Livehouse Niche and various Jazz Festivals. Soon after, the band enjoyed heavy rotation o n Australian smooth jazz station, The Breeze106.3 and constant airplay on national radio station, Traxx FM, Jazz Selekta.

Looking forward, GruvAvénue is set to wow audience again with yet another feat - the first Malaysian Jazz group to record a live album. Scheduled for October 3, 2007, at The Actor's Studio, the band will captivate audience with their full range of original compositions. The elements are delicate melodies, strong rhythmic sense, vibrant harmonic nuances and pulsating grooves!

GruvAvénue keeps a simple and yet organic instrumentation - bass, saxophone, drum, keys and vocals. As a collective, "GruvAvenue" artists come from a wide range of jazz backgrounds which sees as a binding force. These musicians embrace not only free improvisations but also appreciate tonal composition and extended musical forms and changes. Any brief moments of conventionality are trumped by eclecticism, an excellent composing transcends the established musical borders andstares down current definitions of what jazz should be. They have come together with a love for the new as well as the old...each bringing a universal quality thatreaches out to varied audience.

Vincent Ong, bassist described as a friendly iconoclast, an artist who enthusiastically explores new concepts at the cutting edge of jazz. A stylistic chameleon that uses different textures and colors to create tension and augment a song's complexity.

Tay Cher Siang , pianist with flawless embrace for the keys presents the 'sweet' touch. Somewhat authoritative yet moving, he hovers somewhere between homage and prayer while slowly building and then writhing the mood.

Martin Ngim, drummer brings the groove with strong rhythmic sense and tenacity. Moving from seductive percussion works to vivacious raw grooves, he adds vigor to the group.

Shazee Ishak, saxophonist and rapper brings forth sensual harmonic nuances on his wind instrument and expands the group's spectrum of sound with intoxicating loops through modern technology.

Vanessa Tan, a gift to jazz buffs. Not just for her exuberance but her ability to articulate without resorting to imitation, synthesizes with her own estimable talent and results is eye-opening and entertaining. She can shift from one color and feel to the next deftly, moving from throaty version to swinging up-tempo.

Five amazing talents, one amazing sound. "The Awakening" Live Concert promises a dynamic group and energetic performance.

The chance of Dire Straits reforming is highly unlikely. The chances of them reforming and coming to perform in KL is laughable. But, so what? Bluestreats will be paying tribute to one of the biggest rock bands of all time at The Duke @ Duta Vista on 3 November 2007.
Blues who? you might ask. Well, in case you are worried that this is some dinky little pub band, worry no more. Blues Treats is a sinfully undiscovered band who have been playing blues rock with more passion in the blister on their little finger than all of the local fluff you get put together. And if you close your eyes, you could swear that the low growl of the lead singer was Mark Knopfler. If Mark Knopfler smokes two packs a day.
There will be three sets. The first two sets will be Dire Straits hits as well as their less well known songs (for the aficionados out there). But hang on for the third set when the band will play other covers and some of their own stuff. With two blistering lead guitars and a guest sax (Azmi) this promises to be an evening of nostalgia that will blow you away.
