dear all

my marimos start to have brown patches all over them.
I tried washing them but the brown patches still there
I change their water once a week.

Any advices?
*
QUOTE(LuQEE @ Mar 7 2012, 11:58 PM)
i quarantine it,
put it in a basket, filled with mineral water, add a tiny pinch of salt
then put in a place with low-medium lighting and cool place.
putting in a refrigerator might help, if the fridge got an on 24/7 LED bright cool daylight specs.

Results after 3 months:
less and less brown patch on my super giant marimos..lol..
i dont put them in fridge, parents wont let me, so put them  in fish tank with xtra  fan cooler and pinch of table salt(without iodine)

*
Yupe this is the way to cure the marimos, actually this method is clearly stated in the first post of this thread under FAQ smile.gif

leeyung, what is crystal stone? the one that purifies the water?
*
Crystal stone is actually natural stone that we can put into your aquarium to purify the water. But for marimo tank, recommend to go for coral stone/sand as it controlling your water PH level well.

dunno bout you guys,
i am currently using non-iodized and contains no additives table salt (not the normal table salt)
works fine by me since they are almost the same as aquarium salt.
but if u have doubts and cut the hassle, just buy an aquarium salt, much easier but they charge you a bit pricey for one lol

Depends what kind of salt, like LuQee's, need to be non-iodized and contains no additives table salt @.@ can see wat content ur salt has.

most of my nano marimo are carpet marimo :'D How to avoid them becoming carpet marimos? wanted to keep them round if possible ><

No problem for table salt, either table salt or synthetic salt will do, regarding ur carpet issue, this is actually been discussed in this thread post #866, kindly refer there for more info (to avoid duplication questions posted smile.gif )

smile.gif From your photos, based on my experiences as marimo seller for so many years, it seems to be a scrap of marimos rather than Carpet, especially the dying parts from your photos smile.gif. Carpet marimo doesnt look like that form, they tend to be more firm. hehe so don mislead other members about the nature of carpet ler icon_idea.gif btw why dont you refer back to your seller regarding this issue??how long ur marimo stay from ball to such form?

QUOTE(Venus_de_Ein @ Apr 5 2012, 06:03 PM)

There can be many reasons, actually had been discussed in this thread #866, another reason which usually happen to new owners is that they mixed wrong combination of water creatures with marimos. The most significant one will be snail

No really worth for this USB mini Aquarium as with that price, you can get a larger size of tank together with good water filter smile.gif

Cladophora grow rate is pretty low, personally tried it before with all the ways and fertilizer, non of them return significant result, therefore I will advise dont waste your money to get fertilizer for marimos, especially those so called "marimo food" biggrin.gif no significant effect on boosting the growing rate. Best will be using coral sand more than enough as coral sand do control and stabilize the water PH level biggrin.gif

QUOTE(advocado @ Apr 9 2012, 09:12 PM)
Just checking, is it normal for the water to turn abit milky green when you squeeze them hard in a cup of water once a week?
Yupe, pretty normal, marimo do have metabolism as well smile.gif

Regarding fake Marimos, other than normal moss in a pingpong ball, styrofoam, I found out Japan are selling artificial marimo's that looks like real ones, difference is it's made of wheat & ceramic, so just wondering how exactly can we tell the real thing from fake?

Will fake marimo bubble after you clean them up?
This question too subjective as conditions vary according to the "type of the fake marimo"

Will real marimo continue to bubble in water or just for a while?
Not really, it is heavily rely on your tank setup, lightning condition, PH level and also freshness of your water

Will they turn brownish or loose color?
If you are referring to the real marimo, YES if owner neglect them, especially exposed to direct sunlight

Will they stink slightly after 1 week of not squeezing & smells like plant after cleaning?
Depends on your water condition but the smell part is pretty normal for marimo, you will smell the smell like vege algae, something like that haha

Will they float after squeezing/cleaning and sink after half a day or so?
as answered above regarding water conditioning

Will real one feel bouncy when you squeeze them or will they split apart?
Yupe, bouncy feeling like hard sponge

I got curious so i used a satay to poke tru the middle to check one of the not so healthy ones and even though it's bouncy when you squeeze it the inside core seems to be fluffy, but takes abit of strength to poke tru the whole body.
Pity Satay Marimo sad.gif

Also i notice some of the forumer's marimo tend to have rather long "furs".
Long or short furs doesn't mean anything, you cant judge the genuineness of the marimo via its length of furs as claimed by some unscrupulous sellers, the most important thing is the growth rate smile.gif. Btw, with proper trimming/maintaining on its body, you will obtain similar effects
*
On top of all answers above, I as a marimo seller for many years, there is a member pop me a question today, how to differentiate grade A or grade B on your marimo, I felt this is pretty funny as some sellers attempt to create their own Grading System to grade their marimos, these grading are created by their own as gimmick to attract buyers and at the same time low down others reputations. IMHO, there is no such Grade A B C D etc bla bla bla, if Crystal Shrimp then got Grade CRS etc la, a big nono to marimo, no such grading system unless named by ownself biggrin.gif

Haha, nice setup bro, no problem for your light source, for your carpet, I think will be great if you use a stone put on top of it (where the carpet's top is facing down from your photo ) let it saturate at bottom then only take out the stone, bcuz if the water flow is too strong, may make ur carpet into pieces

QUOTE(LuQEE @ Apr 17 2012, 06:39 AM)
heard nowadays, they got marimo farms which imports them from germany, thats y some marimo are sold cheaper than genuine hokkaido ones..
any comments on this?

*
Actually price range should not be used as a standard to differentiate a genuine marimo and a so called fake German marimos. Take for example, some seller who sells a Giant marimo at RM40 and another seller who sells at RM80 each. Sometimes seller have to consider their profit range due to certain constraints, like shop rental, advertisement and etc. So, taking into account of this, they set their margin very high and sometimes people thought expensive things is genuine.

If you ask me, I, as the first pioneer Marimo seller in LYN, the best way to differentiate a genuine marimo and a fake one is not by the looks and definitely not by the price, but is by the texture of the marimo. For instance, I have some buyers who showed me some photos from Facebook and Cari saying that there is a new Marimo seller who said German marimo and Hokkaido marimo can be judged by the ‘fur’.

Seriously, if you think twice, if long fur = German, and short fur = Hokkaido, how about those who trim the long fur bcome short fur, from German change species become Hokkaido? This is the trick played by some sellers to paint black other sellers marimos genuineness.

Not only that, Marimos are natural living creature which lives in the deep level of Hokkaido for many years. Marimos are able to grow naturally without needing any nutrients to boast their growth as what they need are clean water and sufficient sunlight. Just like any other plants, these are the basic needs for them to make food.

Seriously they DO NOT need any ‘Vitamins’ or liquid which claims to kill germs in water and stable the ph level. These are just gimmicks from the seller to earn money. Actually the vitamins is the same with those used for aquariums, just different packaging and claimed from ‘Japan’ and they are selling RM40 per bottle. The same nutrients for aquariums can be found in fish shop for RM5 or so on.

Recently I also notice some sellers who tend to copycat people’s quote in Lowyat and treat it as their own sayings. If the seller is really a genuine marimo seller and has a good judgement on Marimos, why do he/she need to copy my quote and paste bulat bulat in his/her facebook? A big question mark to me smile.gif

So, back to conclusion, buyers must know how to judge themselves about this ‘trick’ on genuineness and fakeness. Like my case, I have been selling marimo as 1st pioneer marimo seller in lowyat since several years ago and the price range doesn’t fluctuate much as I tend to sell the marimo at reasonable price yet quality assured as genuine marimos. Just look at my feedbacks at my personal selling thread, unlike others claiming false info saying others marimos are fake etc then say himself/herself one as genuine, painting other competitors doesnt reflect their genuineness. The best way to know genuine or not is to judge the seller's customers feedback. Just my 2 cents. I hope our Marimo sharing club can grow healthily with more and more Marimo lovers smile.gif

It didn't seem to be interested in my giants though, so I left them there. As leeyung advised previously, I will feed it. However I will be away for a few days soon. So am not sure whether my giants will be safe with it. Anyone has any experience with this?

In fact bigger tank with proper setup, the temperature can go down very significant and easy to control. Very simple theory, larger tank = better water flow = easier to bring down water temp, use inwater thermometer for more precise measurement, stick on glass one not accurate one smile.gif
