Top 10 worst medal winners in football

Michael Owen has won a Premier League winner's medal despite having made just one start this season and scoring a single goal so far. When Owen picked up FA Cup and League Cup winner's medals at Liverpool he was the key man, scoring memorable goals against Arsenal and United in the finals, but his contribution to this success has been peripheral to say the least.

“There are players who would be 10 times more deserving of a Premier League medal in this team than me, so it is not as though I will be flashing it around,” said Owen.

talkSPORT looks back at some of the most eye-raising medal winners in football…

DJIMI TRAORE: 2005 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNER

Spaghetti-legged Traore gave away a stupid free-kick in the first minute of the 2005 Champions League final, from which Milan got their first goal. Traore atoned for this later on with a crucial goal line clearance and, when Liverpool went on to lift the trophy, Kopites were willing to forgive the highly questionable performances Djimi had put in during his time at Anfield (including that shocking own goal at Burnley). Traore has now gone down in popular legend as probably the worst player to appear in and win a Champions League final.

ANTONIO NUNEZ: 2005 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNER

Spaniard Antonio Nunez joined Liverpool as part of the deal that took Michael Owen to Real Madrid, but he wasn't quite the key player Owen had been at Anfield. Don't be fooled by the fact that Nunez is the only player in Liverpool history to score his only goal in a cup final (a sitter from two yards in the 2005 League Cup final defeat to Chelsea); Nunez was crap. His key contribution to the 2005 Champions League success was coming on as a late substitute in the semi against Chelsea and keeping the ball in the corner for a few crucial seconds to waste time. As an unused sub in the final, Nunez still picked up a winner's medal.

REMI GARDE: 1998 PREMIER LEAGUE WINNER

In 1996 Arsenal signed two Frenchmen: one was Patrick Vieira, who became a vital part of the Gunners' success under Arsene Wenger. The other was Remi Garde, who was about as vital as the tea lady. Garde managed 10 appearances in 1997/98 (four as substitute) to qualify for a title medal.

LUKE CHADWICK: 2001 PREMIER LEAGUE WINNER

In five years at Man United Luke Chadwick managed just 25 Premier League appearances, but his six starts and 10 substitute cameos in 2000/01 bagged him a title medal. Now at Mk Dons, the poor lad is remembered more for being ugly than for his football at Old Trafford.

DARREN FERGUSON: 1993 PREMIER LEAGUE WINNER

Sir Alex's son Darren started the 1992/93 at the heart of Man United's midfield, hoping to take them one step further than the agonising second place they achieved the season before. Sadly for father and son, United started the season terribly, losing their first two games, taking just one point from the first three. Ferguson junior didn't play a game after November and, coincidentally, United's form picked up and they won the title for the first time in 26 years. He still bagged a medal, before being shipped out to Wolves and proved he wasn't a one-medal-wonder when he won the, er, Football League Trophy with Wrexham.

Jonathan Greening: 1999 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNER

David May is famous for gatecrashing the Man United treble-winning celebration photos despite having not playing a single second of the Champions League final, but few people recall that Jesus look-alike Jonathan Greening picked up a winner's medal. Greening was an unused sub, but credit to him for having the dignity to avoid doing a David May.

STEFAN OAKES: 2000 LEAGUE CUP WINNER

Stefan Oakes' biggest claim to fame is that his dad was guitarist in 1970s pop group Showaddywaddy. Oh, and he picked up a League Cup winner's medal with Leicester when they beat Tranmere in the 2000 final. This proved to be an early peak for midfielder Oakes, who went on to play for Crewe, Walsall, Notts County, Wycombe, Lincoln and is now plying his trade at Tamworth.

ROY CARROLL 2004 FA CUP WINNER

Former Man United reserve keeper Roy Carroll picked up an FA Cup winner's medal thanks to their 2004 4-0 stroll in the sun against Millwall. Carroll was one of three substitutes brought on by Fergie with a few minutes left with the game well and truly safe.

KLEBERSON 2002 WORLD CUP

Kleberson is primarily remembered in Britain as a total flop at Old Trafford, but he has something the likes of Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and all the great United midfielders can never boast: a World Cup winner's medal, from Brazil's 2002 final victory over Germany. Yes, that puts Kleberson on a par with Sir Bobby Charlton in the Old Trafford history books!

PUGGUY ARPHEXAD: LEAGUE CUP WINNER IN 2000, 2001 AND 2003

The man with a name that looks like a Countdown Conundrum, Pegguy Arphexad is the only man to win three League Cup medals without playing a single second, having appeared as a substitute for Leicester in 2000 and Liverpool in 2001 and 2003. In fact, Arphexad also won FA Cup, UEFA Cup, European Super Cup and Community Shield winner's medals without ever playing a game during his time at Anfield. He certainly wouldn't begrudge Michael Owen that Premier League medal!

You said people asked you to leave the thread. Now look at what kind of post you posting and what so surprising people asking you to leave their thread?

Meaningless one liner. If you have nothing to post, dont post at all. You think this is /k?

So you mean Nani, despite all the "pain", get up himself, trying to get carra sent off was being professional then?

Then when he was in vain, he rolled on the ground, crying like baby asking for barbie doll was very professional then?

Oh great, I learned something today.

And the bold part... how ironic, calling people moron 1st then telling the whole world you are not trolling... WOW
*
hahaha...i loled when read that "club" fans comment in our thread

childish? after carragher tackled him late and cause injury?

who's being unprofessional? knowing that he did it yet still confront Nani to ask him get up

not only carragher...gerrard did that as well

imagine if it's gerrard who received that from nani

and nani ask gerrard to get up

i bet u wont say that gerrard's reaction is childish

moron....
and i don't come here and troll ppl

but i cant stand ur comment

and some ppl in MUST is trolling hard

but i do not and reckon liverpool will be a force next season genuinely

so dun indulge on the past and challenge for the future mate.
*
You mean when nani got up and ran to the ref and fell down like a baby rolling around in pain suggesting that his leg is broken and asking for a red card is professional? Then showing up in training the very next week doh.gif

Some professional you got there.

Anyways, congrats on the 19th. Took you only like 20 years to achieve it. Respect is due when appropriate.

Just to note your comment about the past and the future. Ironically in the past when liverpool were in it's prime, King Dalglish was the manager and now in the present, we've got King Kenny in again. Future looks bright for LFC and you know that and that's why some of you are crapping your pants. SAF won't dare play mind games with our King and let's see what happens when SAF retires whistling.gif

Found some interesting tweets from Piers Morgan pawning Rooney & Owen :-

"Keep drinking @WayneRooney - it's doing wonders for your spelling."

"Dear god, I just miscorrected a @WayneRooney spelling mistake. It's 'their' obviously. He's contaminating me with his barbaric illiteracy."

"I'm going out partying in NY now. Had nothing to do with Utd winning the League - but neither did @themichaelowen and it isn't stopping him." - This had me creasing!

"@themichaelowen I understand football enough to know I've scored almost as many goals for Utd as you have this season. Where's MY medal?"

"@piersmorgan listen I have just won my fourth league title, when was the last time you celebrated? Certainly not your show! #champions" - Then Piers follows up with....

"@WayneRooney I just celebrated big time actually - you finally spelling an entire tweet correctly. Congratulations."

Yah thanks. Although it took 20 years to get there, but we have a 19th!

Btw, I'd rather take 20 years to get 19th, then go almost 20 years without the league title.
*
It took you 20 years to get where we are however you look at it. It's about time someone caught up. It just boring and now we've got the motivation to win the league again. Perfect timing for King Kenny to get back in smile.gif

What's with the trolls coming to our boards anyways?

He's good though I admit, to me.. I'm a fan of gigs even though he's playing for M.U. I pityfk you sad M.U trollers.. BTW, Liverpool has 18 tittle and 5 european ones. so before you say ''the ENTIRE liverpool squad'' get your facts right bro. Liverpool are one with the players saying the entire squad means you're saying liverpool too.

That's because SAF was managing there since the dino ages. Same with giggs even though your facts are not true.

While we're at stats. King Kenny has won alot of silverware while managing LFC for only 5 years :-

Liverpool (1985-1991, 2011-)

Football League First Division

Winner: 1985/86, 1987/88, 1989/90

FA Cup

Winner: 1985/86, 1988/89

Charity Shield

Winner: 1986 (Shared) 1988, 1989, 1990 (Shared)

Now i'd reckon that KK has at least min 10 years left in him now. Imagine what he could win with a longer timeframe.

I would rather spend my time on anything else other than replying to a troll. If I were you guys, save the time, do something else. The more you quote an attention whore like him, the more frequent he is going to troll.

ermmmm the entire squad.

ok, i know you support liverpool, so imma break it down to you step by step.

1. the squad, is always only current unless specified.

2. that is also why u have a squad of 25 players, not 350.

3. giggs has more LEAGUE titles than all of them combined. including KD.

4. and actually giggs has more european cup wins too. he has 2, gerrard carra 1

5. he's won it 12 times!

now we'll focus on overhauling that 5 european cups....feels good to know liverpool cant qualify to add anymore to it. might take 20 years though. heh.

owh. ok. thanks for the correction. Seems like tonight game will be the decider for the 5th place then. An in-form Liverpool vs out-of-form Spurs but i'm not counting chicken yet.

hmm, got the tables wrong.. or it was correct before Man City's last match.

speaking about managerial wins over the time frame they manage, a certain "should have been sir" Bob Paisley comes up to the mind.

Beats the crap out of other managers, really.

@kamka:

nope i was wrong. what I mentioned was if Man City lost all their matches, but that one win made it impossible for Liverpool to clinch the 4th spot.
