Tottenham spurned chance to sign Liverpool star in January

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has revealed that he turned down the opportunity to sign Luis Suarez prior to his move to Liverpool in January.

The Uruguay international moved to Anfield from Dutch giants Ajax for a fee in the region of £23m and has settled into life quickly on Merseyside. He has already netted four time in just 11 Premier League appearances but he was also been the architect of the 3-1 victory over Manchester United and put in a man of the match performance in his last outing, the 5-2 win at Fulham.

And now, on the eve of the Reds' clash with Tottenham that will go a long way to determining who will finish in fifth spot, the Spurs boss has admitted that his scouting staff did not think he would make the grade as a striker in English Football when they considered signing the player in the last transfer window.

"We kept looking at [Suárez] but people thought he couldn't play up as a striker," said Redknapp.

"They said he's like Rafa [van der Vaart] and you can't have him and Rafa or you'd have two players who want to drop deep, so that was the problem. We were looking for someone to play up front with Rafa.

“People said he couldn't do that, he drifts and comes deep. But he played up front on his own the other night and he was fantastic."

How Redknapp must be ruing the missed opportunity. In the intervening four months, Spurs have struggled for goals from their forwards, a situation that was particularly evident in their midweek defeat at Manchester City in which the Londoners dominated proceedings but lacked the knock-out punch.

Liverpool eye Taarabt-Cole swap deal

Liverpool are planning a move for QPR star Adel Taarabt, and are willing to offer Joe Cole in a cash-plus-player exchange deal, according to reports in the Metro.

Taarabt, 21, has been a major factor in the promotion chase for Neil Warnock's side, since his £700,000 move from Tottenham, and has 19 goals in 44 league appearances this season, helping QPR to the Championship title.

His performances have attracted interest from Premier League clubs, and Reds manager Kenny Dalglish is thought to be looking for another player similar to Ashley Young, with a view to developing the player for the long-term, and the Moroccon international fits these criteria.

Liverpool are also keen to offload last seasons Summer signing Joe Cole, who has failed to establish himself at the club. Cole is thought to favour a move to London, however an arrangement involving Liverpool paying a share of the players' wages is likely to be necessary due to his current £90,000 weekly earnings.

Just came back from Souled Out where (what it appears to be) the local chapter of the MCFC supporters were gathering to watch the Finals - all 10 of them biggrin.gif . Can't fault their spirit though despite a pretty unexcitable game. Congrats, lads, well done.

So MU are with 19 now. Credits to them. But I still love Liverpool as much as I did before and I don't feel like we're in 2nd place. We will give our best the next year and hopefully challenge for the title.

I always say this to my Mancs mate, "you never beaten us twice in the league" game to win the title. That's relief, i'm happy that we had torn them apart at Anfield, if Berbatov can do the hat-trick, so do Kuyt. I still remember the childish reaction from Nani after being challenged by Carragher.

That's aside,

The best team wins the reward, we hadn't been the best whole season, certainly have not lost our pride, we are still ( "the most successive English club in Europe ! Eat that !" ); we still compete for the best finish in top flight this season. 5th would compensate the hard work in the last 5 months or so. With Kenny on the card for us , for the next 3 seasons, i could see that he's gonna look after the area's to improve and bring in more stability players instead for the fame.

It's now or never for us in the coming season, certainly there's gonna be loads of smiles around the Anfield Road, certainly not for the new signings and stuff, but to see us playing more like a team and challenge in top flight, and we were ; in the past 16 games, never looked like a 2 man team, claimed by the experts and media and rival fans. We have the greatest opportunity to catch up with what we left behind and , coming season is the one to look for. Its rather come soon

All the rants, humiliations , unethical comments are just from the wanna be fans routine. A true fan will accept the reward of his team with due respect and exceptional joy.

19th isn't about winning, 19th isn't about success, 19th isn't about the best team in the land. Just got lucky..

Harry Redknapp is a joker. Almost every good signing he'll say "hey we scouted him before but we didn't want him."

pretty much a re-cycling formula for news, if you ask me.
