Altec Lansing Fan Club

The Altec Lansing Fan Club is the place for fans to share their experience and knowledge and to discuss anything related to Altec Lansing. Enjoy your stay and welcome to the club! biggrin.gif

Brief Introduction:

Altec Lansing's early technological developments in acoustical and electronic components have earned a place of prominence in sound reproduction few companies can match. The predominance of Altec's name over the years in sports stadiums, arenas, theatres, airports, auditoriums, churches, amusement parks and more recently on desktops within homes and at the workplace attest to this fact.

Altec Lansing speaker systems have formed the backbone of the sound systems in such world renowned places as The United Nations Building, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Disneyland and Disneyworld, New York's Lincoln Philharmonic Center and the Schubert Theatre, MGM's Grand Hotel, The Singapore National Stadium, and The Sydney Opera House, to name a few.

Today Altec Lansing speakers appear in myriad environments, addressing the wide array of needs for quality audio among diverse professional business people, musicians, families, students, music connoisseurs and gaming aficionados within their respective milieus.

Quoted: <IMO, JRC4558 can be replaced, to NE5532 if you want go for budget one. That cheapo op-amp are some better than JRC4558, for better ones try go for LME49720 or LME49860 depends on the power supply voltage. Other Burr Brown op-amp such as OPA2604 or OPA2134 can try out also but i personally not like it for swapping purpose, coz it does not sound like the way it like.>

Thanks for your suggestions! What do you think of S5532(1986/87/89), OP275 and AD827SQ/883B(quite expensive...)? Between S5532 and OP275, which one is better? One more thing, ACS 45.1 runs at a single 12V power supply(correct?).

waste money and time on opamp, when the source is going to be from 'somewhere' and the stock speakers cannot go 'there'
too much limitations on this set.
for fun's sake, just hit 'whatever' comes first =)

yeah single, and the powerbrick sucks brix

The limitation of the source? Is it the TDA7370B, or from the sound card, the computer? So, for fun purpose as well as improvement, what else cound be done on it at this moment?

Yes, S5532 is NE5532. It has a big "S" before the printed model number, and they were manufactured in the older days, someone said those older-manufactured stocks is good at sound. By the way, I have no idea of it.

Not sure about that, but most use NE5532 from Texas Instruments, which i also found to have good quality fabrication. Use a DIP8 socket so you can swap it anytime. thumbup.gif

limitations, come in all forms, from the speaker itself to the soundcard....
it was no meant to be real hi-fi in the first place!

if you ask me,
=) just use whatever you have at hand and easy to get.

cosef has great ideas about opamps....and modding in detail =) he is the pro person to ask this part

Yes, I know the limitations. From the start, I know the purpose-built design of ACS 45.1 is by no means hi-fi equipment, the aim of modding it is just for fun as well as improving its sound quality! After the 1st & 2nd phase modding, I would say the sound quality does improve a lot though it uses TDA7370B which has a 10% THD , it can even to some extent challenge some mini or entry-level hi-fi systems!

Besides, the size of this ACS 45.1 fits the limit room, it's easy to connect a hi-fi system to my computer but difficult to place them since they take up a lot of space!

So, I'll keep up modding it depending on the possibilties and of course the cost effective. Perhaps it's no more an ACS 45.1 since I have even had the satellite speaker units replaced years ago too. That's why I enquired for the possible advantages of having op-amps and some others ICs replaced.

So my sis just bought a pair of VS4621 from pikom pc fair, and the sound only comes out from right satellite, left satellite has no sound at all (idk why she never test it before buying it) All the jack and RCA are properly plugged in.

Could it be the white RCA problem? (It's the one connected to the left satellite) Anybody having same problem?

Dual op-amps:
1 x AD828AR + 3 x OPA2132U for sound card.
5 x NE5532AN(80's big S version) or OPA275, OPA627, OPA2604, AD827...for ACS45.1.

Qual op-amp: AD713, LT1014...for ACS45.1.

Prices depend on which models I'm going to take, it maybe several tens or over a hundred US dollars in total. By the way, a limit amount of money, just thinking whether it's worthy of putting them onto such a low-value ACS45.1.

However, there's no real demonstration, not sure whether there will be improvement, so quite confused of which one will be better, and even consider whether go replacing those op-amps.

The order is still waiting for my confirmation...not yet decided.

1st-phase modification: left & right channels rebuilt independently as well as all the cables replaced inside out.

2nd-phase modification: replacement of nearly all the electrolytic capacitors.

It's been a long road for a newbie like me, getting the original ACS45.1 from there to here, from live to death, from death to live again...! There's a saying: never trouble trouble till trouble troubles you...! No, that's not the way! Modding keeps going on!

3rd-phase modification: all the op-amps have to be replaced.

Let's see how it's going to be...report later!

First comes the AD713KN and "Big S" NE5532AN..., to be honest, the quality of sound does improve a lot even the NE5532AN by no means any high-class op-amp!

congrats, now you just need to change the sub woofer cable to direct solder
if you don't change the sub speaker cable, there will be 'bass lag' mili seconds sound slow reach....

At the initial modding stage, I did solder the subwoofer cable onto the pcb directly. However, later on it had broken the fragile soldering pads, so I removed it.

Now I'm trying to figure out drilling holes on the pcb for a cable connector as picture below shows.

hey all, one proud ADA885 user here.

just bought optical to coaxial spdif converter and now i have digital sound from my laptop to ADA885. i used dolby digital live and now i have 6-channel sound, compared to 4 using quad mode, as well as much lower hissing when not using the speakers. im pretty sure it could also be used for PS3 or XBOX360, so can get surround sound instead of stereo through the analog. got it for 15usd incl. shipping so it's pretty worth it for this feature in ADA885.

Why don't you make a breakout board instead of drilling holes on the existing PCB..

Buy those perfboard, those connector should fit nicely on them..

Perboard cost like RM2 per pieces and can be cut/saw easily..

How to reflow the soldah! man?
*
Read / search thru this thread, I snap a photo of the back of the PCB and bm2000 identified the lose solder ( soldah is his "slang" ), I re-flow it ( put more solder and re-melt the existing solder for a complete connection ) and it is working ever since..

It is not that difficult as it sounds but you would need some basic soldering skills and a soldering iron too..

Hey guys, wanna ask something, i got an Altec Lansing ACS 45.1. I wanna buy another 2.1 AL vs 4121 to connect both through splitter to pc...

1. Does the quality will be splitted also? Or it will remain the same?

2. Wanna ask from the experts, compare between both ACS 45.1 and VS 4121, which one better? in terms of bass, or tremble...or clear sound...because i know ACS sound very blur bit...

I can only answer question 1

it will not split the quality in half though. but in terms of volume power, it will reduce slightly

not sure but if both speaker amps differ in power, ohm, current, etc. it might interfere and one will benefit more than the other

Oh, so it means that, the volume power will reduce, so if i turn up the volume bit, still same huh? I thought the bass or sound maybe will reduce to half though it splitted ba hmm.gif thanks dude

Thread revived, and my MX5021 is dead. tongue.gif

My 4.5 years MX5021 finally dead on last week. Turn on power with all the light on and volume control working, can hear background hiss sound, so output amplification stage should be intact.

Suspected input preamp stage is something wrong. Checked with no noticeable burn mark or cap leakage.

Now no time to DIY repair, just hook my satellite to the cheapo RM60 2.1 PC speaker to power it. Acceptable tho. laugh.gif

Do you have EQ on your sound card setting? if yes, find 30Hz~60Hz band, pull it down all the way or reduce your sub volume. Good quality movie the sound is full spectrum, alot of low thumbing bass, your speaker simply can't handle it. Not related to 1/4 volume or 4/4 volume, once the bass level exceed the sub driver capability, distortion will happen and so called pecah2 sound will heard.

Do basic troubleshooting first...

1. Check power supply working ok ?

2. Check audio cable working ok ? Replace with another cable...

3. Plug in other audio source to the speakers

4. PM to beggarmaster2000

I used Altec Lansing FX5051 for 4 years. Now the speakers was broken down which shock by electricity. I was replaced the fuse inside but still not working. However, I feel very disappointed to choose Altec Lansing. The quality is bad and cover behind the subwoofer was broken and it was delivering broken distortion bassy sound. The sound still broken even how hard I screw the cover up tightly. The center vocal speakers will deliver distortion broken sound.

For the subwoofer, I have to push the cover hard to disable the distortion bassy sound. Their design is really disappointed. Why they want to make a plastic cover behind the subwoofer? When I volume the sound higher, the distortion deliver out because the cover did not seal properly. All the winds are blowing out from the cover.

This is what I was experienced. Now, my speakers was broken down. I am deciding to wait for my salary to buy a new set of Edifier speakers. Perhaps S530D or S730. I don't want 5.1 system since it is really useless. I just want to listen to songs. I have playing PC games at sometimes because mine is gaming PC with SLI nvidia graphic cards.

somewhere the cover deliver distortion sound,

no more Altec Lansing, in the future, don't choose Altec Lansing anymore. especially for the current 2011 new models. all the quality is bad, all made by low cost materials in the factory from China.

next time, if you want to buy a PC speakers, please ensure the cover behind the subwoofer must be made by full cover of metal but not just simply the small plastic cover like FX5051 above.

Randomly found this thread...

I have Altec Lansing 5100 5.1 speaker system...it's still working till today and I left it in Ipoh. Another would be Altec Lansing ATP3 2.1 speaker system still working till now. I'd must say that these days, the quality has dropped down.

Oh no, I've accidentally dropped my MX5021 controller from my desk and now there's no sound at all. I really love this speaker, I bought it with my first salary 5 years ago :'(

Is it possible a broken controller can mute the sound? All the lights are good, I can even adjust the volume, bass and treble. But there's still no sound at all. However, I can't use my remote (haven't use it for a very long time and I thought it went to standby mode due to the drop so I tried using the remote to un'standby' it, but it seems the remote can't even control the volume).

Any suggestion? Hopefully I don't have to send it to KL, I'm at Kelantan.

I'm going to open the controller this weekend, hopefully I'd notice something (I've no experience with any board). If I still can't find the problem, I'll just send it to any technician. Was hoping you guys can give some suggestion on what to look for. I'd post the board pic if I have to.

haha i went on holidays
altecs are real easy to repair with the electronic repair shop....
just the parts are pain in ass to find

it's hell alot more economical to send it to repair shop... prolly rm50 to 'join back the wires'

i'm just a modder/collector... i have some upgrade parts for sale occasionally but repairs are best left to the experts

I've owned a FX5051 surround system for four years and I love the system, but unfortunately the DIN plug on the controller got bent during the move from Arizona to Montana. I would like to know if there's anything that I can do to get the system back up again. I already called tech support and they couldn't find another controller, and I myself haven't been able to find another one ether. Is there anything that I can do to get this fixed, and is it even worth asking a computer repair shop if they can fix it?

shouldn't be a problem to ask a computer store to fix it lol.
or any electrical store will do, if they have that DIN plug.

a few bucks and your speaker will revive

just make sure they got the wires on the right prong of the plug wink.gif

Hy to all, i`m a new user with a bit of a problem, i have a Altec Lansing VS2120 with a bad volume knob, it "crackles" when i turn it and i have to spin it very, very, very gentle so i can find a position which both speaker will work. I want to fix this problem but i cant seem to find a way to take it apart.

Attached Image

I`ve tried poking it where i draw the orange box with no success, i`ve looked for screws, but none found, only managed to pull out the speaker.

Thanks in advance smile.gif

here's a hack!
bend the pins to correct position using a small pliers
in event of broken pins, just cut a small needle size of pin, poke into female and trim it a little poking out.
connect the connectors tightly together. it might crackle but it'll work.....

wd40 damages plastic parts and makes your set greasy. instead use alcohol.....
drip a copious amount into seams of volumer and tweak it all the way up and down roughly and fast until the alcohol evaporates. repeat until satisfactory
if you can't get alcohol... lighter fluid (zippoi fluid) will do just as good

lols... i tot that was the aim of the wd-40?
to dissolve the impurities~

ah nvm... alcohol is not as efficient as I've tried lighter fluid it works better.

not sure why but maybe because methylated spirit evaporates too quickly? I dunno...
I just find original zippo lighter fluid works fine much better than wd-40

I got mine FX5051 controller in good condition. My FX5051 was shocked by electricity due to unstable voltage. Something inside the subwoofer was burned. I was tried to replace a new T250mA fuse but still is not working, the speaker was dead. The speaker was served me with 4 years, I was just replaced a set of new speaker.

My FX5051 remote control and the wired controller were unused. However, you says that you move your speaker from Arizona to Montana. Here is Malaysia, sorry I can't help you.

My wild guess is that the power supply/transformer is burnt.. without any pictures of the circuit board/transformer.. it is just a guess..

Try sniffing the parts and smell which ones are burnt ...

I think when most people who google for AL speaker repairs, google points to this thread... since so many many people ( including myself ) was asking questions on how to repair our old AL speakers ... others would just throw it away and go out and buy a new sets of speakers...

Somehow a see a lot of people asking questions on how to repair their AL speakers here...

I don't know how i could've missed your answer, but the problem isn't with pins. they're actully in good shape, it's the connections between the wires and the pins inside the plug thats the problem. that's why I've been asking if anyone here knows where I could get the pin-out on this plug.

thank you for all the help that you guys have given me, it's been helpful. smile.gif

open up the pod and use multimeter to test connectivity between the wire and the plug pin itself? you can get the pinout yourself for each colour. from the pinout, you can mate a new cable and a new din plug. i did this for my speaker.

I was going to buy this IEM but I saw a lot of bad feedback about Muzx MHP136. They said the earphone very fragile, spoil in a week/month time.
Is that true?

My Speaker MX5021 the volumn control device can turn on got light but just no sound come out from the speaker and woofer.
Previously my volumn control device already cannot adjust the volumn, i only can adjust the volumn to use the windows application volumn to adjust the volumn, but now totally no sound come out at all even i use software to adjust the volumn.
I suspect is the volumn control device problem, becasue i try plug in the headset to the device, it no sound also.

Any idea where can repair ?

Same here, my MX5021 just dead yesterday night...
The failure started with months ago....

Initially --> Unable to do volume control correctly, from 1 light turn to 2 light, same volume. Turn to 3 light, suddenly speaker bang with 3 light volume level
Slowly --> Totally unable to do volume control, after several power on/off, plug/unplug cable, it works back. Intermittent no sound when power on/off
Finally --> Totally no sound, no matter how you tried to power on/off, plug/unplug, it is helpless...

just bought an altec lansing VS2621 .. impressive sound with its low price tag .. RM185 only at harvey norman .. nice ~ not being too choosy but this seems like a good buy compared to other brands ..closest to this is the E3100 from edifier but decided to go with the altec lansing branding since lots of my friend are using AL and recommend it to me hehehe tongue.gif

Hi guys, did you all used audio enhancer program like DFX ? I had a full version *ehem ehem* DFX for WMP .. I think this program works really well in fine tuning our speakers .. without this program, the song sounds dull but once you activate the prgram, it sorts of open up the overall audio range feeling like its more wide and clear, no more flat and boring sound .. you guys should try it .. about 3mb only the file ..

*
A fren recomen it to me too~
it does brighten up the vocals and widen the sounstage~
but at the same time i "feel" like it also add colours to the song~
Dunno my feeling is right anot so i uninstall it biggrin.gif

I have full range full unlocked of DFX audio enhancer for every single player hahahhaha (man... I love boasting tongue.gif )

but then... the dfx is messing up the trebles badly and the bass is just distortion that made it sound huge and powerful.

I thought it was awesome but it's not really that amazing.

it works for cheap standard usb speakers and super low quality MP3 like 96kbps or internet radio streams but if you are using CD quality you get downgrades instead of upgrades.

I would recommend SRS audio sandbox but that also ruins the music (but it's slightly better than DFX audio enhancer though wink.gif )

playing it with ATP3 and I find clean sound better than DFX

Yes it does mess up the trebles abit so I prefer to tweak my own settings on fidelity, 3D surround and ambient option .. to make the song sounds more natural, not too studio like .. hyperbass, dynamic boost disabled ..

anyway I've found something new for myself with this vs2621.. when watching movies & live concert vids that I've watched a thousand times before with the subwoofer .. really sounds different ... entertainment leveled up xD

Ban Leong rejected to repair due to they said EOL and no spare part to repair..

Same here, my wired remote can turn on with light but no sound come out, due to EOL product and can't found any replaceable remote control cry.gif

Anyone here know any idea how to fix the issue? Suspect the remote control IC problem....

Hear a lot bad feedback for MX6021 and need to think twice before I enter the new set of speaker with same remote control issue again rclxub.gif

*
Seems like all MX5021 ended its life in this way...

If u still love the sound from your speaker and dun want to waste it, u can try my method, happy modding. smile.gif

Anyhow I revived my MX5021.
What I did is just open up the controller, checking connectivity, seems good.
Then I open up my subwofer, add the heatsink + thermal paste on the voltage regulator,
change all the thermal paste on the volume control IC,
after that, it is back to rocks XD

Sorry to bother, never considered normal speaker setups before as I've always relied on my headphones. Mind recommending me the cheapest 2.0 or 2.1 setup available for Altec Lansing that you are comfortable recommending? For use with laptop.

I'm considering anything below 200, while anything below 400 should technically be possible.

Yes I know I'm bumping all these threads, but the general recommendation topic hasn't been updated in awhile and the prices are all over the place.

Recently "found" back my old beloved ATP3 but it is no longer working. There are alot of "pssssshhh" sound came out from the satellite and nothing plays out of the speaker.

I'm thinking if any of you know if there are any shops out there that fixing PC speakers? Hope to get it revived sad.gif

Anyway, I have bought a VS4621 after found out that the ATP3 is no longer functioning. Speaker material of VS4621 is abit disappointing but SQ is still acceptable.

First comes the AD713KN and "Big S" NE5532AN..., to be honest, the quality of sound does improve a lot even the NE5532AN by no means any high-class op-amp!

See this link for capacitors...read AC coupling section... mainly use to remove DC offset...
http://www.ehobbycorner.com/pages/tut_capacitors.html

For the audio/amp IC replacement, u will need to read the existing IC datasheet/pinout and find similar amp IC with same pinout so u can desolder and do direct replacement...

...

My ACS 45.1 right speaker always no sound due to the PS/2 connector loose.. so I cut the PS/2 connect and solder all the wires directly to the PCB but it did not work... power switch also dun work, cannot turn off...

Any idea why ???

The Left (green wire) and Ground seems to be shorted and Right (red wire) and Ground also shorted together...

Here is the picture of it..

I re-solder it nicely but still nothing... then I just remove the two switch/volume control buttons wires ( yellow/orange/white) from the speakers and connect it near the subwoofer and only runs left+gnd and right+gnd to both the speakers... still nothing...

Everything seems good but switch / volume control is not working / no sound when power is connected...

Haha, I guess I finally blew it... vmad.gif icon_question.gif rclxub.gif

No time to fix it now... will try to fix it another day or get another amp to power both the satellite speakers and the sub-woofer as the cases and speakers looks pretty good
compared to today's PC speakers...

Proud owner of 3 Altec Lansing speaker systems: the VS4121, MX5021 and the FX4021. Used to have the ATP3 but i was stupid enough to sell it a few years back. All the above speakers sound great, but i see it's a universal problem for Altec, as all speakers have that transformer buzzing and huming noise. But the overall sound quality tops all the cons the systems might have. Great, Just Great Speakers.

I would like to buy a 2.0 system for my laptop but even at second hand, they are still tough to find. Would go for the IML247 or the XT1 but all-in-all would like to buy the FX3022 that are just alsolutely nice.

Have a nice day to all AL Fans !

Today I went to Machines warehouse sale and grab a UHP336 for RM15.

Havent bought IEM in a long time and to my surprise that it actually cost few hundreds long time ago. There's just a small problem with the melting rubber at the IEM but just need some cleaning.

At first, I felt it was quite ok, but bass is so lacking. I was almost disappointed and then grab my few years old Mylar1B to confirm if I were not imagining things.

Im surprised when I plugged my Mylar, because it suddenly felt like shit. Grab the UHP336 and tried again, really felt better. Grab the manual for a read and readjust the cabling/fit, now it was even better.

Had to be the best RM15 ever spent.

changed the aux cable
reflow the solder for better connectivity

If there are burnt and broken tracks then the lightning strike must be pretty powerful. It does seems that not only the controller board is affected, but possibly the power amplifier inside the subwoofer as well (thru the audio line in/out connections). You may want to check the board inside the subwoofer for any signs of lightning damage... hmm.gif

If very powerful lightning strike then the chances of total hardware damage could be high (and repairing cost is high as well, since nearly every component on the circuit boards will have to be replaced). Thus, you may want to consider a getting a new speaker. Just remove the screws at the back panel, and you should be able to pull out the power amplifier board to check. Be prepared with a bright flashlight and magnifying glass... hmm.gif

Depends on your budget for the new speaker system. If you have any brand preference then please mention it as well. For recommendations, try posting your inquiries at this pinned thread here: Special Interest -> Home Entertainment -> Audiophiles -> Please Recommend... a 2.1 or 5.1 speaker set V5... wink.gif

I will first introduce myself to the club by saying that I am a proud owner of the PT6021's hooked up to a X-FI Titanium with a QED Performance Series J2P Cable.

I have spent quite some time finding a way to know for sure that I have reset them to a flat EQ setting, I have even contacted Altec Lansing regarding what the correct settings are. They didn't actually help much as I described the number of "notches" the bass and treble settings have, you can hear a sort of click if you turn the speakers up to full and adjust the bass and treble settings.

I first guessed that the middle number of notches for bass and treble would be the flat EQ setting.

Starting from the bottom LED on the controller, the treble setting lands directly in the middle of the 3rd LED, although the bass setting has an even number of notches so it cannot have a middle notch so to speak and it lands either at the bottom end of the 3rd LED or the top end of the 2nd LED. Altec Lansing just agreed with me on this and let me go on my merry way.

So sometime later, I decided to research this some more and I came across a Factory Reset setting on the Altec Lansing T612 Ipod/Iphone Dock.

To quote from the manual it says this.

QUOTE
Resetting the system to original factory settings.

To reset either the treble or bass function to its original factory setting, press and hold the corresponding TREBLE or BASS button on the top of the unit for 5 seconds.

To reset volume, bass and treble functions to original factory settings, press and hold the button on the top of the unit for 5 seconds.

So I tried holding down the Power Button and lo and behold, it reset to FACTORY SETTINGS!!! Success!!!

It does not tell you how to do this in the manual, nor did Altec Lansing Customer Support seem to know about this, so.

QUOTE
The Secret Factory Reset for the PT6021's and most likely the Altec Lansing Speakers which share the same Controller... (SLS6221, FX6021, MX5021 and possibly others.)

1. It doesn't matter if the power on the controller is on or off.

2. Hold down the Power Button until the power LED blinks rapidly.

3. Keep holding it down until the LED's are normal again.

4. Your speakers are now FACTORY RESET!!!

Try it out, if it works, please confirm with your speaker model. thumbup.gif

It turns out that my Factory Setting is... Treble is directly in the middle of the 3rd LED, bass is top end of the 3rd LED. That is a whole LED in difference for the bass setting. Hmm smile.gif

Hi

I took home a set of FX4021 speakers /sub a neighbor threw away. Looks brand new but will blow fuse when plugged. I suspect the transformer. Can you direct me to where you found your replacement transformer? Mine says Ten Pao Industrial Model TU54018F0, Input 120v/60Hz, Output 17.5V/ 2.1A

I've been trying to match these specs in several on-line electronics shops, but I can't get all the parameters to match.

Thanks!

And what is your country? Over here we use 230V 50Hz. As for online stores, have you checked RS Components, element14/Farnell/Newark, Mouser, Digikey and Parts Express? You could also try searching in eBay, Alibaba/Aliexpress and DHGate as well... wink.gif

The problem very sounds familiar, in fact for the bass problem same as vinothrao84's unit (same Altec Lansing ADA885) that I've fixed. Right now have repair work overload (including another Altec Lansing ADA885 belonging to ktek), thus you may have to wait for a while (until I'm quite free)... sweat.gif

Could be faulty potentiometer (e.g. the wiper has lifted off the track) and/or dirty potentiometers there. Try using contact cleaner and spray directly into those potentiometers (you may have to dis-assemble the satellite speaker where the controls are located). Do update us on the results... hmm.gif

The reason for the fuse to keep blowing is because some component inside has failed and became a short circuit. Have repaired one of those Altec Lansing ADA-885 before (some time ago, owner was vinothrao84), and also have another one currently in repair (belonging to ktek). As for repairs, can look me up although currently not that free (repair overload)... hmm.gif

My VS 4121 right speaker is not working anymore. I would like to resolder the 9-pin Male cable that connects the right speaker to the woofer.
I am pretty sure the cable is broken right where it connects to the woofer.
Does anyone has or know the link to the Wiring diagram or cable color for the 9-pin Male Socket? notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

well for some reason, the speakers started working fine after a while,
so im still using them...

for your case...
u can check to see if its due to the connector having problem / broken...
or maybe the cable damaged...
if you can isolate the issue to specific item, then easier for someone here to guide you to fix it...

for those who own a broken 2.1 altec lansing setups I kindly suggest getting it repair by swamping the internal amplifier board with a cheap ebay 2.1 amp kit available. I did mine and the AL 321 sounds better than ever before...but the speakers driver must be a in good condition lah...my suggestion

Wow, this thread still alive despite altec already dying?

Too bad those execs that made Altec great already left the company. Really a good time back then with ACS48, MX5021 (first batch), ADA885. Too bad I missed out on ACS295 (ADA70) and 641.

Hello, yesterday i just got my hand on second hand acs 45.1. For a very cheap price, the speaker has some problem :

1. The speaker just turn on every time I plug it to electric source, no need to press both up/down volume button.
2. The volume button is not working anymore, I cannot decrease or increase volume.
3. The sound of the speaker is very low, and with lots of noise. All speaker are working, including the sub.

Can anyone here with this problem? This is my 1st attempt to buy altec lansing speaker biggrin.gif

For reference, I already spent last night trying to re-solder several point. This has not bring any improvement sad.gif

Also the speaker seal is already broken, I assume the last owner already open it for fixing. Maybe he somewhat rigged the volume button so it always on when plugged to wall?

I attached some picture of the volume button, has anyone knows if it is indeed rigged?

Thanks icon_rolleyes.gif

Dear all,

I gonna die... I've lost my 641 remote control when I moved...

Could anyone tell me where I could find such a remote ?

Or could anyone take some pictures of the 641 remote control (inside the remote control !!!) so I can "DIY" another one (I have some skills in electronics) ?

This is the same as the one from the FX4100 system

Thank you very much for any help !

Based on the official website it seems no new model anymore. Their 2.1 flagship should be the aging MX6021.

My MX5021 was retired completely now.

Hi, FX6021 user here. Bought since 2005.
It's spoilt, no sound coming out around 3-4 years ago.
Digging it out and trying to troubleshoot.
Any hint of common spoils problem?
The controller light is on, but only no sound coming out.

i'm taking e&e course, but due to unrelated careers over 5-6 yrs...become too noob alrdy blink.gif

mine was bought by big bro in canada (still made in china). due to different volt range, the fuse went spooof here sweat.gif
brought to shop, then the technician told me need change "coil" <-this time i'm not in uni yet, so no idea.
he said this will downgrade power around 10W...but using till now..champs.

wanna re-made the subwoofer box.
is it possible to upgrade/boost the woofer perfomance? any guide?

as for satellite, i may replace the speakers+tweeter.

Hello guys!

I'm still using my ATP3 which i bought roughly about 13 years ago from Sungai Wang plaza.

Really love oomph and the sounds it outputs. But the connection wires at the subwoofer I have to constantly fiddle with it coz sometimes Left speaker only got sound and the right doesn't have.

Also sometimes the subwoofer goes berserk mode as if the bass volume is maximum.Fiddling the wires connections at the subwoofer helps with the problem.

Anyone knows where i can send it for repair?

Seems to be usual symptom of aging and wear out potentiometers.

Flickering sometimes due to faulty cables, check the input cable (green color one) first, If that's fine that perhaps the speaker cables. If the cables are fine then need to up the notch and look at internal amplifier circuit board.

i doubt that, even altec lansing customer service is close to zero. Their previous product are really build from the heart. Just look at most of the Altec Lansing owners, good review on product but poor customer service, but i do have some ALtec Lansing 5.1 up to let go, barely used. though if you are interested.

hello, i'm new to this section and this website. i am currently debunking the PCB of an Altec Lansing VS2621, or at least what is remaining of it...

i have the main subwoofer but i don't have the 2 speakers. i had it because the composite connector was broken and speakers were stolen. the guy let it to me because otherwise he would throw it away.

Though, i know nearly why each component's role is done for.

if anyone needs the schematic, i have it.
v1 : Attached File  alteclansing_vs2621.pdf ( 47.77k ) Number of downloads: 309

v2 : Attached File  altec_lansingvs2621_2.pdf ( 86.72k ) Number of downloads: 231

Besides, i need heavily backlighted normal and reverse pictures of the pcb of the speakers. rclxub.gif icon_question.gif

this is my last hope, no pictures of the pcb can be found on internet. my project is to transform that audio kit into an active subwoofer. my audio system misses a .1 speaker tongue.gif that system is 7.1 and i have already the 7 speakers thumbup.gif .

from the signals written on the main board, i guess there is:
_ button on/off
_ volume potentiometer,
_ jack 3.5 stereo connector
_ a pcb/board

the idea is to give vs2621 owners a schematic in order to repair theirs (and also for my own project).

add me to the club biggrin.gif

like how?

chances are your cable is dying or your volume pots are old and needs cleaning

I usually advice spraying with contact cleaner and twist the volume back and forth to clean it but most of the time vs4121 is so tightly covered the spray couldn't get into the electronics sweat.gif

the schematics that i've posted were done by following each copper track to each component.
i wrote down everything i could. but there are some parts i don't understand (the big part in the middle of the sheet).

Just joined. Am currently working on same unit ACS45. Just got mine working with a new chip, but no volume control. Not sure if it is really any different than the 45.1.
Your issue is probably the volume control chip. I can walk you through the repairs in exchange for more detailed pics of the volume circuit. Please show how wires relate to plug. I have just the sub/ amp without the L/R speakers. Need to figure out the connections for the volume buttons.
I even have several spare volume chips if you need one.

Guys I need some help here on my Altec Lansing ACS 45.1

I did fix it myself couple of years ago and I forgot the link on where was the guide of replacing the mosfet IC and sound controller.

So right now I’m not sure which IC need replacement as I’m facing sudden power cut off and buzzing sound.

I can’t recalled do I need to replace the ST electronic chip mounted in the large heat sink, as I didn’t replace the electronic volume controller chip Toshiba before as it didn’t give that problem.

I've found the culprit. The big cap 10,000uf has worn off. That cause buzzing/humming sound.

Did you replace it with a high-quality-branded capacitor?

Can someone please show pictures of the ADA885 inner circuit board, i.e. thhe one below the sub-woofer speaker. Mine keeps cutting out and I have seen on other forums how it can be fixed by fresh soldering of a circuit. If you can post the schematic or pictures, I would appreciate it. Any info or tips on how to fix the sub-woofer cutting in and out would also be nice to have.
Thanks

Hi Guys,

I have an AL 321 type 2.1 speaker for about 18 years now. When I'm turning the volume button, the speaker gives a faint humming noise. I guess a squirt of contact spray would make wonders for the rheostat, but I don't see how could I disassemble the small speaker (in a reversible way of course). Any hint or idea?

Thanks a lot

I can only guess from google images but, do they have rubber feet underneath hiding the screws?

Hi, I have this antique ACS 45.1 since 2001, last year found out broken with the:
1) Unable to turn on/off (double click on the volume button)
2) Broken hissing noise, volume become super weak, volume cannot be controlled

What do you think would be the problem?

I can point out the problem but I don't know the exact fix to this. You can try at your own risk.

1) Unable to turn on/off (double click on the volume button)
-Well it's time to repair the clicky buttons on the top. It's a common problem and most of the time a slight spray of contact cleaner will solve the issue. But some user did report they have to swap the button switch to new ones via soldering. Looks like a common button to me.

Some old lowyat post

Maybe can try buying a pack of 5 from RS and solder yourself

2) Broken hissing noise, volume become super weak, volume cannot be controlled
-This could be many variables. I can only say for one common issue which is the wire connector part maybe broken.
I can't remember if your aux cable is connecting the right speaker or the subwoofer but you can try swapping that cable first. Aux cable is the cable with 2 headphone jack on each ends. Mr DIY sells them so can try that first.

-If that doesn't work then I'm just worried 2 things since most cable all hardwired and hard to repair without common electronics knowledge. You can always start by spray contact cleaner into the ports and connect disconnect your cable to clean the dirt off to see if it fixes it.

-If that doesn't work I suspect either cable snap or the ports solder cracked internally and require solder reflow.

Hi guys, I have an aging acs 44 which just kaputed on me.

Whenever I switch it on its sound like " guuuuuu...." continuously.

So its fixable or a new speaker is the better path.

Probably fixable if it has sentimental value but with many new options out there it's better to just go get new ones.

Yeah ... I think that too since its been like >15 year old.

What puzzle me is it happen out of the blue while in operation ... actual sound is not audible but a duuuuuuuuuuu sound emerge.

Any recommendation for something that is in a budget ?

Have my eye of the Edifier R1280DB but its a bit pricey to me.

Hi Guys,

I just opened up my treasure ACS 45.1 which was in a box for last 7-10 years.
Woofer and only the main speaker with controller is working. Volume up, down, on , off is all working like a charm.

I have checked the speaker and its working when I connect to Laptop or handphone. I have opened the main speaker and found no signal coming from the woofer (Main board).

Hope to get some assistance on what could be the cause. If there is any specific IC need to be replace, where can I get it ya. Been out of touch on electronics for many years. I would go to Jalan Pasar on a worst case scenario only.

As i know, Farnell electronics is closed in PJ. (I used to by IC's here during my college days.
As for RFS in Glenmarie, not sure if its still there and sell loose parts. Preference is to buy replacement parts online. Lets see how it goes.

Hope to get some feedback. Thx in advance.

you can but you'll still have to run the volume control which is attached to your right speaker. And it'll sound weird if you have 2 set of speaker playing together

Then I guess you'll have to get yourself a subwoofer amp separately and wire directly to the subwoofer speaker. There are many TPA3116D2 based subwoofer amps you can use to hotwire directly to the stock subwoofer speaker as long as you don't mind unscrewing and snipping the speaker wires.

My understanding is that ACS45.1 will not run without the right speaker. There may be a way if you are skilled with electronics and can bypass the main outputs by bridging some stuff in the built-in amp but I'm no expert in reverse engineering an amp,

just for anyone also wanting to do the same as i did. i consulted some friends, and ended up, cutting the 3.5mm aux cable, and had the ground attached to the Line Out Red Output, and the White/Red (combine it) to the Black Output. The standard audio line to the other speakers are also combined. You may need to switch polarity if you're not using the Altec Lansing supplied aux. Then just connect the Aux to either Line In on the Subwoofer and power the sub. This way, i am able to add the Altec Lansing Sub to my Edifier setup, and likely and speaker setup with Line Out.

You need someone just to replace the IC and caps? or diagnose the issue?
If you have the IC and caps, maybe try ask any Engineer niece or nephew to do it for you. Else just walk in to any of the electronic show and ask if they able to do it for you with affordable fee.
