Not really sure what do you mean by ``receive money``. Usually cards are used to spend, not to receive money. ie debit cards are attached to savings account, credit card is used to spend within the limit of your credit card.

So I'm not sure what do you mean by 'receive money' here...
*
An example...
When you claim back Value Added Tax, VAT (we call GST in Malaysia) when leaving Europe, you can choose to receive VAT (GST) refund in cash or direct credit to your Visa/Mastercard.
Refund to a Visa/Mastercard enjoy better exchange rate and more convenient than refund in cash (long queue)!

Don't forget M2 Amex gives 5X TP (worth 1%); Most of Visa/MC gives 0.2-0.3% only.

One card I like to use for overseas transaction is Public Bank Visa Infinite Credit Card, since it gives 2% cashback for overseas retail purchases (cap at RM80 per month).

PBB does charge 1.25% fee above the Visa rate, but with the 2% cashback the net rate is actually below the Visa rate and even a bit below XE rate.

So this card is quite good for overseas spending up to equivalent RM4k per month.
*
RHB Visa Signature and World MasterCard also gives 2% (with conditions).
Some debit cards don't charge extra above Visa rate.
Wise Prepaid Visa and Merchantrade Visa Prepaid are good for some users as you can buy the currency in advance when cheap (hedge the currency and no extra charge when swipe the card).

hello, planning to buy something online in yen. taking into account of 8% cashback using amex islamic, it should be worth taking the 2.5% extra fees right?
*
You need to make sure the payment transaction go through Online verification, not the Japanese merchant direct debit your Amex-i account.

walao wei. thanks for sharing. gonna make another overseas payment today. probably will use my aeon credit card instead.

Though AMEX may charge higher, but you may get 5x Treatpoints (worth 1%) vs. 1x Treatpoint (or 0.2% CB) for using Visa/MC.

TNG Visa & Wise (TransferWise) Visa Debit can give cheaper rate, better than using Visa/MasterCard credit card.
e.g. S$2
TNG Visa RM7.06
Wise Visa Debit RM7.09
Public Bank Visa Credit RM7.15

Does that mean visa also charge 1%?

Around +1% hidden charged by Visa International if use a credit card.
Not limited to RHB.

Cheaper if use debit card or prepaid card.
