Ok.... i know we had something like this few months back on the Phreaks thread...
I just wanna update my musiclibrary again... long time since ive Bought any albums...
Please recommend some good albums...
latest one ive got is Offspring- greatest hits... really nice smile.gif Good to heard some good ole fast punk rock thumbup.gif

PS: Please do not spam with every single album youve got on your library. Only ones that are really good(from your POV). We all know what blacktrix is going to say so ill just add it on now to save the hassle

1) Offspring-Greatest Hits
Genre : 90s Fast punk rock
Review: A must have if you haven't got their albums. If you like blink 182 you gonna love this... fast tempos... outstanding riffs.... check out The Kids arent Alright's intro riff to know why. Their new single -- Can't repeat, is quite cheesy imo but catchy lyrics and riffs are juz overwhelming. Don't just take my word for it... go to a music store and give it a listen. One more thing that shuldnt be ignored is that you can CLEARLY tell that the vocals have been "reproduced(??)"... juz as other punk bands.
8/10
Listen to : Can't repeat, The kids aren't alright, Hit that.

2) BLS- Mafia
Genre : Metal
Review: To be honest i wasnt really impressed the 1st time i got it. But the after all these ZW discussions and a review on Guitarist Ive decided to give it another go. Surprisingly, my doubts clearly slowly song after song. Saying that it all sounded the same was DEFINITELY wrong on my behalf. Several piano intros really separated this band from the rest. And you can definitely hear Ozzy type vocals from this album.
8/10
Listen to: Dirt on the grave, Suicide Messiah, Forever down

3)Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters
Genre : Rock/Electronica?
Review : I never really liked the Sisters then, but because of the cover of Comfortably Numb (I hated it, but it's addictive. Weird right?), I got the album in a, well... let's just say in a wrong way . Now that I've heard the album, I really should've bought it because it's BLOODY GOOD! Fusing rock & pop with electronica & disco, their songs are as catchy as you could ask for as you would find yourself grooving to the catchy beats. Forget their 'disco' image & listen to the album, you would've fooled into thinking that SS are a typical tongue-in-cheek pop rock band just wanna have fun (read : lots of fun ).
Verdict : Why bother about Saturday Night Fever when you can rock and disco out every night?! This is a fun album and best played in parties or just to lift up your mood.
Recommended to : To pop/rock fans (Especially fans of Darkness & maybe Bee Gees) & catchy party song lovers. Basically everybody lar!

Outstanding Tracks : Laura, Take Your Mama, Mary.

Highly recommended

4) Shal sagan- a special note
5) Rory Gallagher - Live In Europe
Genre : Blues Rock
Review : Again, another album I regretted getting in the wrong way. It's ok cause I swear that no matter what, I will not download/listen/borrow his Irish tour CD until I get a copy.
Here's an intro of the late-Rory, he's a 70s Irish blues guitarist. The problem with him is that he isn't ranked among legends like SRV and dare I say, Hendrix. That's probably because he doesn't dress up like a rock star and like Led Zep, doesn't release singles. Rory always loved the blues & his passion's shown through his album. On a live setting, Rory's very energetic & he never had a setlist. He just play whatever he feels like to and the band would follow suit(Try being his bandmate!).
Anyway Live in Europe are live tracks taken from his Europe tour circa early 70s? This is when he tours as a trio. Rory on vocals, electric/acoustic guitar, mandolin, harmonica.
Well let's cut to the chase, on this album Rory's a perfectionist in every sense of the word. The band's as tight as hell and the musicianship's just amazing. Rory's acoustic playing has always been fans' favourite and tracks like "Pistol Slapper Blues" (Acoustic) & "Going to My Home Town" (Mandolin) are highlights of the album. (If you have the time, check out his fingerpicking wonder Unmilitary Two Step.)
Verdict : Great live album, full of energy from Rory, the band and the audience. If you want to show your friends what live 70s rock music is all about, slip this record(Along with Led Zep's How The West Was Won and Deep Purple's Made in Japan), they'ill be impressed.
Recommended to : Blues rock (Particularly SRV and Hendrix.) & live rock fans. If you wanna get into Rory, this is the album.

Outstanding Tracks : Messin' With the Kid, Laundromat, Pistol Slapper Blues.

10/10 (If only I could give an 11)

6)Led Zeppelin - (Untitled Forth Album)
Genre : Hard Rock (Basically)
Review : Tracklist :
1) Black Dog - The album starts with drone-ish noise, followed by the silly yet sexy lyrics, "Hey Hey Mama Say the way you move, gotta make you sweat, gotta make you groove," & the whole band launches into the blues rock number. Something fresh from Led Zep & reminds one of the Fleedwood Mac song (What's it called again?)
2) Rock And Roll - Cliche rock 'n' roll tune, very loose and heavy at the same time. Page's sloppy solo fits the loose feel of the track perfectly too Great feel-good track.
3) Battle of Evermore - The band take a backseat from the heavier tunes and plays a Lord of The Rings-inspired folk tune. This time, Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones play mandolin, very very folky! This track shows the band's versatility at best!
4) Stairway To Heaven - Self-explainatory.
5) Misty Mountain Hop - A constrast to the previous track, this cheeky tune starts off with a cool JPJ organ riff. There's some weird story tellign in this track but no matter how many times I listen to this, I couldn't figure out what Plant's trying to sing. Well it doesn't matter does it?
6) Four Sticks - Bonzo playing with 4 drumsticks, hence the name (He recorded the track after he saw Ginger Baker live. He said, "Well Ginger Baker? I show you something," and plays the drums with 5 sticks) Not my favourite, quite different from the typical Zep tracks.
7) Going To Califonia - Acoustic folk tune which features Page's awesome acoustic playing.
8) When The Levee Breaks - Great closer for such an great album. The drum sound on this's revolutionary. The track has the hard rock feel, but some how Zep injects it with a very bluesy and loose yet tight feel. I guess that's the great thing about Led Zep.
Verdict : The 4th Best selling album of all time. A lot less riffs but it shows Led Zep's songwriting at best!
Recommended to : Classic Rock & other rock fans too.

Outstanding Tracks : Black Dog, Battle Of Evermore, Going To Califonia.

10/10

7)Coldplay - X&Y

The thing with this album is, It feels like Coldplay has outdone themselves again. When I was waiting for "A Rush.." to come out I was expecting another electric riff from Johnny Buckland to soar through with Martin's acoustic in the background. But that wasn't what they did. Its the same with this album. Its faster, and simpler than previous albums. But I feel that this is the key to why this album is easier to relate to. I'll just talk about the songs I love best..

1) Fix You - I have always loved a good ballad. Think "Hey Jude" or "Let it Be" from the Beatles and this one is probably going to slot in somewhere along those lines. Nowhere near the previously mentioned classics.. But good enough for today. The four part harmony at the end reminds me of how much we missed these. Lennon, McCartney and Harrison used to do it and they've made songs so much prettier. If anything, at least listen to the last section.

2) Speed of Sound - I don't know about other people, but when I saw Coldplay performed this one live on AOL, I fell in love with it straight away. It's a more rhythmic "Clocks" IMO, and doesn't sound so much like the movie anthem of the former.

3) Talk - This one is probably going to be released as a single cuz it sounds really poppy. I love the how the lead guitar and the bass complements each other so well and with the drum beats in the background.. cool..

8/10 - Most anticipated release since Oasis's "Be Here Now"

8)Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
Genre : Jazz
Review : I can't really give a full review on this as I'm not that familiar with other jazz singers and I rarely listen past the 7th song. Why??? Because the first few tracks are my fav!!! These days if I can't sleep, I would keep repeating the track "Come Away With Me" (At most 4 times?).
Verdict : Very jazzy and relaxing album to listen to (Best listened to at night when you're winding down.). Perfectly produced, Norah's seducive voice is the sole reason you should buy this album, it's no wonder why she had won so many Grammys.
Recommended to : Pop-jazz fans & basically anybody!

Outstanding Tracks : Come Away With Me, Turn Me On, Feeling The Same Way, Seven Years.

Norah Jones - Feels Like Home
Genre : Jazz/Country Blues
Review : I bought this album when it was released and at the time I didn't fancy much of Norah Jones (Bought it on instict). And what surprised me is that this album is very different from what I initially thought of her & I fell in love with it the first time I heard it. This album's very different from her debut in the sense that this is more loosely produced & shows a different side of Norah Jones, a more country blues side if you ask me. The albums begins with a lovely country tune "Sunrise", followed by a bluesy tune "What am I to you" and poppy number "Those Sweet Words". If the first 3 songs do not capture your heart, you should be returning this album already cause it's obviously not your thing. As I've said, it's loosely produced with minimal overdubs, hence great space for all instruments to breathe, giving it a live feel! This time, there're more instruments involved, ranging from banjos to box. Anyway, my favs are In The Morning, Toes, Humble Me, Prettiest Thing (Beautiful song! One of my all-time favs too!). The album ends with a jazzy Duke Ellington tune which Norah Jones's only accompanied by her piano.
Verdict : A 'happier' country blues/jazz album.
Recommended to : Anyone really.

Outstanding Tracks : Prettiest Thing, Humble Me, Those Sweet Words.

10/10

9)Trivium - Ascendancy
Genre : Metal/Metalcore/whatever they just rock
Review : Dont be put off by the metalcore tag that some associate them with, cos this band will kick everyone's asses inside out.
Dont ever compare them to killswitch engage either, cos trivium will just chew them up, regurgigate and re-chew them up again.
Soundwise, they basically borrow (ripoff) from bands as diverse as iron maiden to metallica, not bad for a band who all were not of legal drinking age when they recorded their 1st album.
i say if you're going to ripoff your heroes, must as well do it so it sounds unique, and that they do quite well on this their 2nd album.
'pull harder on the strings of your martyr' is destined to be a classic before the year is over.
and watch out for the soon to be released single 'a gunshot to the head of trepidation'.
recently conquering donnington, as well as the metal hammer awards show, looks like theres nothing that can stop trivium.
not even another hurricane.

Scissors rawks man.. "Laura" is one of those songs that's would stick in yer head for weeks. Shhhh MO...

Anyway, Don't kill me but I'm more of a Brit lover than the American bandstand so my favorite albums this year are:::

1)Coldplay - X&Y (I'd still prefer Parachutes over any albums but this one is a recording masterpiece. Simplicity and ballads at their besh!)

2)Athlete - Tourist (The next Coldplay maybe - much more fun and less depressing than CP to listen to)

3)The Killers - Hot Fuss (You know this one)

4)Oasis - Don't Beleive the Truth (this one is not well publicised but its a gem! even if you're not an Oasis fan. Some songs are different than what you'd expect)

You guys prob. have listened to these so tell me which songs are your fav!!! thumbup.gif

It's more tragic considering he's so underrated when he has done so much, really! He was a humble & honest guitarist, he wasn't like the rest of the 70s, who all dressed up with funny looking props to look good (Funny by today's standards but it was work of art then thumbup.gif ). With Rory it's just him, his strat and his fingers (Pick, too). thumbup.gif

That's the Best of album, not sure if it's worth it (Somehow studio albums don't capture the vibe.). I would say either the Live In Europe or Irish Tour (Where he added a keyboardist to the power trio) as the better starter album. Hope you like Rory as much as I do! thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Roger Wang - Journey Home

Genre : Jazz/ Instrumental

Review : One of our local music maestro on the acoustic guitar. Really talented on the acoustic guitar. This album is played is a solo instrument with him on the acoustic guitar playing, bass lines, melody, and percussion. Catered to local audience and international alike. Has some local music on the album. Some of his music is some remake of familiar tunes from of old and also oldies. No vocal only instrumental. hi otehr album which has vocal is a joint with mia palencia - Team Double take.

Verdict: Recommended for easy listening and aslo to support our local music industry.

Highly recommended to jazz and instrumental listeners.

Just a quick pip:
If you like Southern Rock, you HAVE to check out the new Dukes Of Hazzard sound track. Every song is excellent.... oh wait... there's the HORRIBLE Jessica Simpson song...... Ignore that.... The rest of the album is absolutely country-tastic....
Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray, Molly Hatchet..... You can't get any better then this! Well..... they could throw in a little Pride & Glory.......

It's so good, it made me yell YEEEEEEEE HAAAAWWWWWWW the whole damn time I'm listening to it.

I'm a big fan of Norah Jones. smile.gif

Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
Genre : Jazz

10/10

Both albums are great in their own rights imho, get both if you can. If you want jazzier songs, get her debut. If you prefer country and want a happier album, get Feels Like Home.

Not sure about the Peter Malick Group's album tho, is it any good? I think I'm gonna get it some time soon. smile.gif

Anyway, at one point I was pretty tired of Feel Like Home (After repetitive listens btw, it took some time mind you!). I took this album out as I'm writing the post & I'm hooked again. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

led_zep, you and i both bro! another favorite lullaby album for me is Dido's No Angel.

good album:

Alice In Chains - MTV Unplugged.
simply beautiful. you can clearly hear the tormented soul of Layne Staley from his vocals. excellent prduction, excellent songwriting. you don't get much dark acoustic albums, and this is simply the best for me.

Trivium - Ascendancy
'pull harder on the strings of your martyr' is destined to be a classic before the year is over.
and watch out for the soon to be released single 'a gunshot to the head of trepidation'.
recently conquering donnington, as well as the metal hammer awards show, looks like theres nothing that can stop trivium.
not even another hurricane.

anyway these guys have been in my player for quite awhile now, since i 1st saw the video for martyr.
oh yea, the lead singer cum 2nd lead guitarist uses a les paul black beauty tongue.gif

turin brakes - the optimist, jackinabox

discovered them while listening to wowFM during the station's early days. their songs are quite melodious. More towards ambience like songs and alot of working around the acoustic guitars.

Their new album jackinabox abit hard to find in local stores though. sad.gif heard some tracks and again like their previous album, got lotsa good stuff. tongue.gif

Led Zeppelin - (Untitled Forth Album)
Genre : Hard Rock (Basically)
Review : Tracklist :
1) Black Dog - The album starts with drone-ish noise, followed by the silly yet sexy lyrics, "Hey Hey Mama Say the way you move, gotta make you sweat, gotta make you groove," & the whole band launches into the blues rock number. Something fresh from Led Zep & reminds one of the Fleedwood Mac song (What's it called again?)
2) Rock And Roll - Cliche rock 'n' roll tune, very loose and heavy at the same time. Page's sloppy solo fits the loose feel of the track perfectly too thumbup.gif  Great feel-good track.
3) Battle of Evermore - The band take a backseat from the heavier tunes and plays a Lord of The Rings-inspired folk tune. This time, Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones play mandolin, very very folky! This track shows the band's versatility at best! thumbup.gif
8) When The Levee Breaks - Great closer for such an great album. thumbup.gif The drum sound on this's revolutionary. thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif The track has the hard rock feel, but some how Zep injects it with a very bluesy and loose yet tight feel.

10/10

Recently I've been listening a lot to Eric Johnson's Bloom. It's an amazing album with lots of varied tracks. With everything from Rock, pop to jazz & country, the songs are all amazing and pretty addictive. Eric's definitely one of the best kept secrets in the guitar world. Highly recommended! thumbup.gif

I'm a fan of live albums, so here some of my favs: smile.gif

Eric Clapton - Rainbow Concert
In the early 70s, Clapton suffered from a huge drug addiction and was missing from the music scene for awhile. Hence in 1973, his friends including Pete Townshend got Clapton to play in a concert as a comeback & what a great comeback it is! The all-star band isn't as tight as one hoped but there're no signs of overplay. Clapton shines here. thumbup.gif

Led Zeppelin - How The West Was Won
A collection of live songs taken from 2 LA shows in 1972/3. This was the time where they were transforming into glam rock stars but still, they were very tight even with the improvisations they pulled. Pagey had a LP tone to die for while Bonzo provided a solid backbone with his drums 'poundings' & Plant showed that he could hit the 'ahh' notes on Immigrant Song without sounding rubbish. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola & Paco De Lucia - Friday Night In San Francisco
Any guitar or shred fans should own this! It contains only 4 live songs (& 1 studio) but the musicianship displayed could floor anyone!

John Mayer Trio - Try!

Ozzy Osbourne - Tribute
Imo, it shows why Randy Rhoads' considered one of the most influencial metal guitarists of all time. thumbup.gif

Texas Flood is amazing considering it was recorded in... about 3 days?? However the studio environment doesn't really capture Stevie's energy, his live vids are 10 times better! My iPod is filled with some cool stuff......
I even have Robert Johnson in there somewhere...... some B.B. King..... lotsa Ray Charles......Allman Brothers (figures..... since Zakk was a one-night-only member of the ABB).... Prince......

And then you get the genuine "Huh?" moments when you start seeing Frank Sinatra.... TONS of Elvis....Bee Gees....... Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.... Tim McGraw.......Phantom of the Opera soundtrack (both Movie AND Broadway version)......

Not to mention the obscure Boy bands (GREAT when I was seducing chicks back in the days) right next to Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Sentenced and of course BLS..... Sabbath.....

A VERY Diverse iPod indeed......

ya, symphony and metal, 30minutes plus if i'm not mistaken...their other song 'rose of pain' also not bad...like the intro..very gothic

can try the following instrumental artist..

john petrucci - tunnel vision, damage control
steve vai - freak show excess, tender surrender, bad horsie
joe satriani - war, crystal planet
neil zaza - i'm alright
toshi iseda - full on

for jrock:

UVERworld - just melody
gackt - redemption
hyde - season's call

I'd recommend each album starting from 1964 till 2006 but just try and pick up his latest album "Modern Times"

Some good 2006 albums I've heard... smile.gif

John Mayer - Continuum
- His best studio album to date and has more than enough bluesy licks to satisfy Hendrix & SRV fans. A very bluesy & r&b-ish album. Highly Recommended. thumbup.gif

Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
- Politic-charged, fresh arrangements & great guitar riffs to boot on. There are quite a number of synthesizer parts in this album compared to the previous one but they complement the songs very well. And that track Knights of Cydonia... one word - EPIC. thumbup.gif

My Chemical Romance - Welcome To The Black Parade
- Very dark album, in fact the first track reminds me of Pink Floyd's The Wall. However this is NOT your typical emo band, the guitars are huge, the solos are directly from Brian May's book and lyrics are about death and depression. If that's your thing, you'ill like this album. smile.gif

Hey there, yeah i've heard the latest album. I've to say its not one of his best albums, but the songs are much more agressive as compared to space ship one. It is still though a good album to check out rclxms.gif check out these few songs(some songs have essences of satch, maybe pix might like it laugh.gif ). Rusty Old boat, get out of my yard(the first 38 seconds consists of highly impossible appregios and string skipping which sounds bloody cool), echo song...ahh just check out the whole album yourslef laugh.gif

Trivium's The Crusade and Lamb of God's Sacrement were surprisingly good this year...... different from what we're used to from the bands, but good metal nonetheless.

Oh..... and who can forget Dragonforce's Inhuman Rampage....... those solos are just INHUMAN indeed.

Yes... I won't apologize for that, it's my honest opinion. Just listen to the first track. You could say that the lead singer's influenced by Roger Waters, one way or another.

Everdying, if I told you Nick Drake's music is dark, what would you think? It's the lyrical content that's dark, not the surface.

I'm not a fan of the album actually, but some of the tracks took me by surprise, espcially the first one. Nonetheless, if you're not a fan of My Chemical Romance, it might not suit you. biggrin.gif The guitarist isn't too bad, surprisingly! rclxm9.gif

Pink Floyd and MCR?

You're comparing David Gilmour to whateverhisname guitarist?

MCR is just another band that's evolving that New Jersey vibe. Perhaps their penchant for theatrics are similar in vein, but comparing their music?

Anyways, what is 'emo band' anyway? I've heard it being mentioned so many times?

Also, whats with 'Rock Shows' on MTV and V? The trailers for the show features bands like KISS, G'N'R, etc etc but when you watch it, its full of wussy teen poppish music whose descriptions include 'rock', 'heavy', 'punk' blah blah blah which is total dogs bollocks. How does Keane end up on a 'Rock Show'?

Do these programme directors need an education in music or are they merely succumbing to peer pressure from current 'rock' enthusiasts?

I've even heard of the New Jersey sound being called 'punkish'. WTF!

Whatever happened to Punk=Sex Pistols?

Is this the WUSSY generation?

Yes. We have all become victims of the MTV generation....... where Dave Navarro is a guitar GOD (Ok.... he's good, but not Van Halen good.... or Yngwie good.... or even Herman Li good), Simple Plan is Punk Rock and MCR is metal........

At least American programming still have Headbangers Ball and excellent Rock stations on Radio...... all we get is Fly Guy......... doh.gif

I'm a live performance junkie, so I'd have to say his live session albums in Stockholm and Woodstock is brilliant.

Check out his extended slower rendition of Red House in Stockholm and of course, the seminal Woodstock album. Especially love the free jam almost at the end.

Also, check out his Band of Gypsys or even better, Band of Gypsys Live at the Fillmore East. 'Machinegun' is ripping on both.

Personally, I don't care for the media and their labels.

No I didn't compare Gilmour with that guitarist, I compared The Wall with the first track. Perhaps you should listen to the album before ranting. Not all music played on MTV are bad, you gotta live out of the media's influence and start judging music on your own. Just because it's mis-labeled or overhyped, it doesn't make it bad. yawn.gif

I find it rather amusing that you're again very quick in choosing to assume, especially since we hardly even know each other. How you are able to conclude that I have not listened to the album is beyond me.

I chose to express my opinion of music that is being hailed as good or as rock or whatever. And I chose to express my surprise and disagreement on your comparison of 'The End' with 'The Wall'. If forums are not the place for a healthy discourse, then perhaps I have gotten the whole spirit of forum boards wrong.

My earlier post did not for one moment assume that you are an idiot for expressing your opinion on the album and for your comparisons. I would appreciate it if your replies were written in similar vein - to myself or to others.

A large part of Pink Floyd's sound IS David Gilmour. I was merely stating that obvious fact to you, and that if you are really comparing one to another, then MCR's guitar-work would have to be just as dominant in its similar intense quietism. Hence one guitarist to another.

Additionally, I did not say that ALL music on MTV are bad.

Once again, I fail to see how you are able to categorically conclude that I am unable to judge music on its own inherent merits without being blinded by hype. Did I not just say in my earlier post that I do not understand the hype on all these new labels and bands? Did I not say that I was into Artic Monkeys? Aren't they newish? How then explains my indulgence in Mars Volta?

I would suggest that what I have written is understood in all its nuances before assuming - please. tongue.gif

Media and Labels:

In a large part, the music-buying masses are comprised of people who are brainwashed by the media, hype, trends, labels etc etc because that is what media and labels do.

Some people may be fine with allowing a whole generation of tele-tubbing watching infants (for example) to grow up with that sort of mindset, but I am not. Thus I am annoyed by the inapt categorizing of music as this represents a shift in social culture, which in time will no longer by considered a 'shift' but rather the norm. This is a trend not only present in music, but in almost all other spheres.

Once again, it really depends on what the shift is towards. In this case once again, I find it inept.

Cheers.

Alright, so you've heard the album? Fair enough, I apologize for assuming that you didn't. Moving on...

So ranting is a healthy discourse? Mind you, this is a topic on recommended music albums and from the MCR album, you went on and rant about MTV. I would like to know how healthy it is to rant in a forum, we all know it rarely leads to a happy ending.

If you don't like what they're playing on the Rock Show, fair enough but I for one do not think they are "total dogs bollocks". So Keane and so forth are probably not your thing, however imo they still fall under the category of Pop Rock, thus Channel V does has its reasons for including it in The Rock Show. Perhaps my sentence "judging music no your own" is too vague... Did I assume that you can't judge music on its own merits? No. Do I think you fail to differentiate between music that is not your cup of tea and music that is 'total bollocks'? From your post, I couldn't help but think so.

As on the subject of Pink Floyd,
When I compared the track The End to The Wall, obviously I'm comparing Gilmour's guitar work on The Wall to the guitar work on The End. But your question was... and may I remind you :
"You're comparing David Gilmour to whateverhisname guitarist?"
Firstly, I'm not comparing David as a guitarist to whateverhisname guitarist, but merely their work on their respective tracks. The riffs & arrangements both are, without doubt similiar to that of In The Flesh.

The Wall is Roger's masterpiece and vision. If someone were to compare The Wall to some other album, the first things that come into mind are the rock opera theme, the lyrics, the dark-sounding Bb(?) key that was used throughout the album.
Unless you're assuming that the comparison is made from a guitarist's standpoint, that is.

And one final thing...
"in fact the first track reminds me of Pink Floyd's The Wall"
Your reply?
"You're comparing David Gilmour to whateverhisname guitarist?"
And?
"My earlier post did not for one moment assume that you are an idiot for expressing your opinion on the album and for your comparisons. I would appreciate it if your replies were written in similar vein - to myself or to others."

I rest my case.

1. Ranting can be healthy if taken and delivered in the right vein. I believe I did not direct it towards anyone on this forum, and I believe I brought up very valid points (as you would yours), rather than it just being an emotive outburst based on dubious logic. I have no idea of what your exposure so far has been, but it would seem that things take on a very different light with you. I have had numerous positive endings to rants - mostly by mature people who agree to disagree, and without any sort of presumptions or assumptions in their posts on a person's influences or thought processes.

2. 'Total dogs bollocks' was directed at the labelling of certain music as rock or punk etc. Once again, please re-read my post. If you have totally missed it, my rant was about mislabelling and not about slating bands who weren't my cup of tea.

3. I fail to see how you can compare a person's guitar work without comparing the guitarist. One's guitar work is a culmination of one's influences and experiences etc. This reasoning is filmsy on your part.

4. -->

I have already explained this in my previous post. Once again, please re-read.

I was asking you a question. Perhaps you should re-read the follow-up para in my post :

"MCR is just another band that's evolving that New Jersey vibe. Perhaps their penchant for theatrics are similar in vein, but comparing their music?"

Did I slate your choice of comparison or did I post an alternate view of your comparison?

If you are feeling defensive over alternate views on what you have reviewed, then please by no means take it out on me, and then turn around and say that my reply to your review implied that you were an idiot.

6. About ranting in this thread - I believe that should one disagree with a certain review - in this case, mislabelling, then one should be free to express that, especially in a thread that is supposed to 'review' albums.

---

You chose to view my questions and concerns about popular music culture today, in my very first post, as being somehow personally directed at you, when only the first portion about MCR was in any way related to you.

But you are right, this has gone on for longer than it should in this thread. I will refrain from any more replies.

p.s. I would still like someone to explain to me what an 'emo band' is please, or do I need to start a needlessly short thread on it, seeing how some might view it as being OT in an 'album review thread'?

Did Pix imply that you're a anti-MTV??? I don't know, but if so, your first post does indirectly imply that you're one. Not that I'm assuming that you are one, anyway. laugh.gif

2. Does it make a difference? Don't forget about the "wussy teen poppish music"... isn't that slating bands who weren't your cup of tea too?
3. If you put it this way, fine.
4, 5. The similarity between the 2 is too huge to be ignore. Like I've said, the lyrics, the rock-opera theme, the dark-sounding key as well as the riffs. I'm not being defensive, it just surprises me that you find it surprising to see comparison. I believe I'm not the only one or few who have made such comparisons... it shouldn't have surprised you.
And to answer your alternate view, I was merely comparing the first track of the album to The Wall. MCR's music on the whole, pales in comparison to Pink Floyd's imho.
1,6. Disagree, yes. Going further and rant about the Rock Show and so forth?

Perhaps you want to know why I view the questions on MTV and its mislabelling directed to me? Whilst I'm a fan of classic rock and blues, I'm also a huge fan of the music played on MTV - James Blunt, Keane, Coldplay etc... you name 'em. And perhaps you should respect the music listeners of this kind rather than dismissing them as "wussy teen poppish music". They're poppish (nothing wrong with that, eh?) music, but not in any way "wussy" or "teen".

Quick one (altho I said I won't reply, but I couldn't resist biggrin.gif):

I said wussy teen poppish music AGAIN, in relation to punk being equated to MCR = mislabelling. If MCR is taken as punk by teens today, then what does it say of the mindset?

I listen to James Blunt as well, Coldplay (own their albums), etc etc and some of the mainstream commercial bands that gets tonnes of airplay on MTV and V. If you like Wierd Al Yankovic (for example), then hey thats your choice. But it will disagree with me if you then say his music is metal.

AGAIN - my post was about mislabelling, not about anti-MTV or disrespecting those who like to listen to different genres of music.

Excuse me if i got in the way but:

what's the problem with mislabelling? With the massive fusion of music styles nowadays, it's bound to happen that some people label themselves as a rock band while playing "wussy teenie" stuff. Some bang out a tune with weird chords and heavy distortion and call it jazz-rock. Some joker decided to form a boy/girl band and call it R&B and it definitely wasn't rhythm nor blues. Whenever i say i hate this rapper, some dude comes up to me and says, "thats hip-hop you idiot". Metal? To me it's all noise. Funk to some is just boring 16 beat one chord crap.

I don't see any harm in mislabelling, because labelling music to me is quite a stupid thing to do. To me there's only good music and shit.

AGAIN - stop assuming --->

Go on, you know it's irresistable. laugh.gif tongue.gif

I believe your post did not convey that meaning successfully.

Now that's surprising... so why is it Keane not rock enough for the Rock Show. Just curious here.

I think Pix knows where you're coming from & I doubt that he assumed that you're anti-MTV. He was just... being Pix. laugh.gif

Couldn't agree more. There're only 2 types of music to me, good and bad but like Diazepam said, he's not the type who could sit around and let the MTV generation getting brainwashed by the (mis-)labels. For me, I couldn't care less. smile.gif biggrin.gif

bah this mtv whatever stuff will never stop.

my recommendation for today..

shakti - shakti

genre: world fusion. (western and indian music)

members:
john mclaughlin ( guitars) , L. Shankar (Violin), R. Raghavan (Mridangam), T. H. Vinayakaram (Ghatam and Mridangam), Zakir Hussain - (Tabla)

Tracks : Joy, Lotus Feet, (What have i for this, what have i for that, i am dancing at my feet of my lord, all is bliss, all is bliss.)

perhaps an abulm that doesnt appeal to everyone (who in the right mind would like classical indian and western music? fused together?, but then again certain people do). nonetheless its a great abulm that i would recommend to people who appreciates music as a whole. its a musical masterpiece, the wild creativity, smooth flowing music is wonderful, played with superb skills and musicianship...one could ask no more. sometimes this is what we wish music would be like, free flowing and creative. yet only a handful of musicians have the skill and ability to pull of stuff like this. even worse that only a handful would like and understand the wonders of it.

*perhaps the other important point about this ablum is that mclaughlin uses an acoustic guitar in this outing, he droped his electric wanking from his mahavishnu days to create this masterpiece.

Hmm.

Lets put it this way. Conventions and names are attributed to things (in this case, music genre) simply so that definitions are more or less universal across the board.

If definitions, meanings, even ideas are not represented correctly by their common terms, then it would be a lengthy exercise in explaining what each means. There is a particular white paper in the sociology that addresses the use of pre-established terms etc etc so that an idea or research isn't bogged down by the explanation of what has already been established before, but the title escapes me at this present time.

If I speak about punk to a current generation radio-friendly listener, I would be hard pressed to dive straight into the nuances of it as our definition of it wouldn't be the same. We would first have to establish the parameters of our definitions.

A corollary of this is that people now speak of different things while using the same name. And if a person is deprived of the ability or opportunity to explain or to understand, therein lies room for miscommunication.

Of course, simply as a listener, these things wouldn't really be important. But like all things of appreciation, there are different levels to it, and different facets of appreciation.

p.s. I'm sure that most avid classicalists wouldn't stand for a concerto being called an overture or a pianoforte being mistaken for a pianosimmo, would they?

A really good Jazz album is

Brad Mehldau - Art of the Trio, Vol.2: Live at the Village Vanguard.

His playing has been compared with Bill Evans, but I think its darker and more complex. He combines Jazz with some classical models and elements in his playing.

Larry Grenadier on bass and Jorge Rossy on drums just completes the trio perfectly.

If you're looking for a comtemporary Jazz trio who has a penchant for abstracting harmonies in a distinct Jazz/classical style, then this is for ya.

well what can I say...

Cafe Del Mar is actually a Bar in Ibiza, and they used to sell tapes of music and then turned to CD's and compilations..I think 13 of them, if you ever heared of Jose Padilla's works..he's a DJ in that bar and he compiled the first albums...to me I like the 6th album coz it was the first one I got..

the albums feature songs that are laid back chilled jazzy and easy to listen to with alot of ambiance and out of the usual music..and some famous artist too..to name a few there is: Talvin Singh, Paco de Lucia, Stan Getz, Nitin Sawhney etc...

going on the same steps there's also Buddha Bar which is an actual bar in france..it also features artists and has alot of great compilations about 7 or 8 of them..

I'm not as eloquent as you but i'll try:

Well we've reached a point in the music scene today where nothing is clearly defined. I realized this when i got the job as a bassist in an older band (people who grew up listening to 60s 70s even 50s stuff). And when i talk about rock they look at me with a blur face. And when they talk about rock i think about oldies. The thing about music is definition is constantly changing. That's why we get terms like 60s rock and 70s rock. And now we have the 2k rock?? laugh.gif .

Of course when i talk about music i'm excluding classical. Because classical music to me is not the "music" as referred to by the masses. It's classical music. And even then, i doubt there is a certain chart to define how many dB pianosimmo is (if i understand pianosimmo correctly in the first place...). And i've never heard 2 pianist play a piece exactly the same. Which concludes for me that again, there are no clear boundaries and definitions.

p.s This discussion can go on for ages laugh.gif

wooow.. sorry i couldn't follow up yesterday.

diapezan, it wasn't directed to you but to anyone (I compiled your "feelings" and bassix's ones when writing my post). Yet, when reading "mars volta", "artic monkeys" and something like "I pee on labels", it sounds very stereotypical to me ! I hope you understand why ?

I know : you might not have said that clearly, and you can be indignated by all those insane thoughts i'm putting in your "virtual" mind... but that's not the point of a forum. I, personally, am not fighting individuals (or the *exact* words they were using), I just care about the information / ideas conveyed in a post. And what you convey is a complex message that is prone to be interpreted in a different light than yours. But if you keep fighting about the misunderstanding part rather than the point of your posts, you'll never get your point accross in the end.

Funnily enough, ledzep posts are less complex, and clearer. To me, they are more valid.

I think Echo got into a feud with someone called Gapster or was it Gapnap? over something to do with sweep picking me thinks.

Then again, this gap dude sure has some enemies. I heard Daniel of Edge of Fire actually confronted him during a gig and they got into some scuffle or something.

My initial post was really quite simple, and yet it was taken in a different light.

Additionally, I don't really know about LedZep's standpoint on this, but I don't believe I was fighting. I thought I'd mentioned that I was hoping for a healthy discourse?

I think if people try and read what is really written instead of what they want to read, they'd get less things wrong.

But then again, without having the advantage of talking in person and hearing the tone that it is delivered in, one is always going to interpret posts in whatever way they wish, no?

he is actually ok one.......just that he likes to flame people in tank, its not the forum he posts seriously so he's just toying around. i cant really argue with him on that, tank is the place where i spam and cause trouble.

another few abulm reviews...

vital tech tones - vital tech tones

genre: fusion

line up : victor wooten, scott henderson, steve smith

the line up explains much of this outing...ganas! and it lives up to it, no this aint no wild creativity musical rant...so people looking for rio ancho, shakti, and those wild stuff look elsewhere nonetheless its a very good abulm with great jazz playing (come on, those names cant suck).

porcupine tree - voyage 32

Steve Wilson (everything)
Richard Barbieri (Synthesizers on Phase IV)

genre - psychadelic, rock

tracks ; phrase I - IV

perhaps one of the weirdest abulms i listened to. its targeted to LSD users so like dark side of the moon this is an asid trip ablum. why the comparision with floyd? now porcupine tree has been labled by some as the floyd of now and its very very clear in this ablum (you'll know when you listen to it), although later outings they have a more mainstream pop feel to their music its pretty obvious where their roots are.

this abulm is about a trip and thats it, its a trip that takes you through diffrent soundscapes and atmospheres trying to pull emotion out of the listener. with cool guitar solos littered around and mixtures of multiple sounds and instruments, the atmosphere or "trance" thats created is astounding. you like trance? i think you might like this, you like guitars also....wallah good combo for you.

note also this is an atmospheric ablum..think about er.....something like aphex twin + explosions in the sky. so if you want some lyrics dont look here, if you want wanking not here either, if you want an ablum that plays on the atmosphere and something psychadelic IMO this is one of the must gets

Vital tech tones. Some nice stuff inside, but some really weird pieces too.

Scott Henderson is a genius. I think Wooten is seriously on steroids on this album. The basslines in almost all the pieces are vigorous. The weakest link in the band is steve smith in my opinion. But other than some failed attempts in polyrhythm and some crappy drum solos, nice album.

EDIT: i wouldn't classify it as jazz though. Fusion sounds better. *Whee mislabelling again* tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

it is fusion but well again those two just seem to come together, if you look under genre for shakti most people would put it under jazz instead of world music. same as jaco pastorious stuff and paco de lucia.

though one is flemenco and the other lies more towards fusion people generalise them into jazz

Regina Spektor!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regina_Spektor

Weird but really damn good music. Sort of like Bjork and Jewel mixed together. Her music is described as 'anti-folk', which apparently is a mix of punk and folk. A lot of the songs are sparsely arranged, with just a piano accompanying her voice.

She's a really experimentative singer, singing one way in this song and a totally different way in the next. Of course the fact that she has a really good voice gives her the leeway to do that.. I think she's the only singer I ever heard where at the end of one song she actually sneezes. (In 'Mary Ann', a song about a woman murdering her lover.)

Get her latest album 'Begin To Hope' and listen to the song "Samson". Really beautiful song. The rest of the album is superb also.

She's released a few albums already, but impossible to get them here lar, unless you go the you know what route rolleyes.gif

Outstanding songs (not all from the same album)-

From Begin To Hope- Samson, Fidelity, Lady (basically the whole album is good except for one or two songs)

From earlier albums- Carbon Monoxide, Oedipus, Pavlov's Daughter etc etc (too many to list)

I don't get it why we don't get more of this type of music on local radio. If I hear Hips Don't Lie *one* more time I might just strangle myself.

Ermm...this is not exactly an album, but get the King Crimson "Eyes Wide Open" live in tokyo 2003 concert. I just watched the DVD. And I am still dumbfounded. I have never heard anything like it never seen anything like it and never experienced anything like this. I swear after watching this DVD you will have either of the 2 reactions:

"what the *#*euro$!! was that noise all about?"

or

you will need a 2 week vacation from any type of music just so you can digest what you have just seen and heard.

I am still shocking.gif rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

thumbup.gif At first I thought it wasn't anything special, but it's the kind of album that grows on you. Their music is indie folk, the songs mostly driven by guitars.

I love their lyrics. Each song tells a story- The Crane Wife is based on the folk tale about a poor fisherman rescuing a crane who returns in human form and marries the fisherman to repay her debt.

After hearing this I checked out their earlier albums. 'Picaresque' and 'Castaways and Cutouts'- the songs (especially on Picaresque) are even better imho smile.gif

His collection is quite vast and is reasonablly priced. Just look out for scratches and dents before buying.

Album: Nightfall in Middle-Earth
Band: Blind Guardian

One of the most definitive power metal albums of all time. No discussion of power metal is ever complete without mention of Blind Guardian, but their style is so different from other power metal stalwarts (read: Helloween, Stratovarius etc) that they are almost a sub-genre unto themselves.

The strongest point of this album is the song-writing and the arrangement. There are so many layers on each track that you'd need a damn good sound system and a quiet environment to fully appreciate this album. If there ever was a true Metal Opera, this is it. Imagine giving the Noldor a bunch of ESPs and dress them up in black leather... you get the picture. thumbup.gif

Recommended Tracks: Into the Storm, Mirror Mirror, Thorn, Time Stands Still (On the Iron Hill), Curse of Feanor

The Lord of the Rings? Bah! The Tolkien-reading world is divided into two groups of people: those who've read the Silmarillion, and those who will! cool2.gif
