if you use only single 3.5mm jack, then it'll be stereo only..
i think the 5.1 mode only works when u use the spdif/toslink/optical cable/whateveryoucallit from your xbox or PC..

all the fancy outputs are for the xbox.
PC needs to buy RCA to 3.5mm for the 5.1...doesnt come in the package.
the surround is done by dolby processing.

if your PC has the spdif out, then you can utilise the spdif input on the chimaera, just like the xbox..
the RCA-3.5mm is not necessary..

just need to set your default sound device in windows to SPDIF instead of the analog jacks..

using the above method will allow you to use true 5.1 source, whereas the dolby headphones will just take 2 channel stereo and upmix to become virtual 5.1.

the true 5.1 source is supposed to give u more accurate positioning, imagine watching a 5.1ch encoded movies in stereo, the dolby headphones can only do guesstimate at best.

but there is no true 5.1 source...

the SPDIF will allow true 5.1 source.. its a digital pass thru, and its commonly used in HTPC for output to external decoder/amp..

how do u get a true 5.1 source from a 2.0 headset?
the chimaera only has 1 driver on each side, unlike the tiamat which is a true surround source that has 5 drivers in each cup.

dont confuse the source and the number of drivers..
the source that im talking about is movies/games that are natively outputting 5.1.
by using RCA-3.5mm, you are forcing the movies/games to be downmixed to stereo channel only, hence losing the extra channels of positional audio data.

the megalodon takes true 7.1 source, do the virtualization at the backend, and presented it to user by downmixing to be output by 2 drivers, but the controls on front/center/surround channels are still fully working, and the positioning will still work, because u gave em 8 discreet channels of data, and it will know which sound to which channel..

the same applies to Chimaera 5.1 IF you use the SPDIF cable.

whereas if you use stereo and upmix to 5.1 via dolby headphones, then it'll be the dolby algorithm doing the hanky panky to upmix a stereo to 5.1 and give u some guesstimate positioning, because it will not know which sound to which channel, cause u only gave him stereo..

dont ask me how 2 drivers will be able to simulate 5.1/7.1 channels(aka megalodon style), even if i give u a true 5.1 speakers setup, you will still be listening it with 2 ears rite? your other senses doesnt help in determining the source/position of the sound, so go figure..

Tiamat 7.1 looks good! Gonna consider this one... hopefully it will available for testing maybe in the upcoming PC Fair or something.
