Hope so, they really need to change to better codec. BTW, is it just me, or Discovery ch.551 PQ is degrading? doh.gif

I don't think within 6 months from now they are able to upgrade more than 2 million non-byond to byond subscribers.

Don't give hope too much.... With MPEG4, Astro can lower down further the bandwidth for each channel and means they can add more channels compromising the PQ.....

I doubt they wl move to MPEG4,we are doomed with whatever they decide to give, they are just phasing out old decorders and trying to save space so that they need not hve 2 versions of one channel.

PETALING JAYA: Nilamas Corp Bhd is set to showcase a team that will take on giant Astro All Asia Networks plc in the battle for eyeballs in the local pay-TV market.

The market will be demanding answers from Nilamas as to how it can take on Astro when other players in the past have failed to do so.

Astro may also not be the only player that Nilamas has to slug it out with, as content is now even pushed through by traditional telecom companies, which also are owners of fibre optic and wireless networks, and Internet protocol television (IPTV) players. These include Telekom Malaysia Bhd ™, RedTone International Bhd and Maxis Bhd, which expects to launch its IPTV offering soon.

Sreedhar Subramaniam.
Tomorrow, Nilamas is expected to unveil at an event the details of its plan to offer an interactive digital cable-TV service, providing entertainment and interactive educational services to the Malaysian market.

At the same event, the company is expected to launch its brand and announce the name of the new entity, said to be Asian Broadcasting Network (M) Sdn Bhd, that is projected to drive the digital cable TV business.

Sources added that Sreedhar Subramaniam had been appointed chief executive officer and director of the digital cable TV network. They said he and his team had to make sure the targeted service launch date of second quarter 2012 would be kept. Sreedhar was formerly CEO and co-founder of Malaysian Insider and prior to that, he was chief operating officer at NTV7.

Thus far Nilamas had hired about 20 people and that included some technical experts from India, the sources said.

Along with Sreedhar, it is believed that Anne Edwards has also been appointed producer for economic news and Michael Chan senior vice-president for sales. Chan was formerly with Maxis and prior to that, ntv7 and Astro.

Nilamas has secured all the requisite licences from the Government to offer digital cable TV service. Under its various licences, it is allowed to offer broadcasting services for a fee. The licences are valid for five years.

The set-up cost for the cable network offering is expected to be RM2bil over five years, according to sources, and Nilamas may be looking at a 40:60 equity-debt combination to finance its venture.

The broadcasting centre will be in Puchong, Selangor, and its directors and shareholders are Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor, Tan Sri Mohamad Noor Abdul Rahim and Datuk Nik Mohd Amin.

It intends to offer a variety of content, both entertainment and educational, and will create its own content besides buying from abroad.

The question is how will the company be able to offer content that is exclusive to Astro?

Nilamas has been talking to many content providers and it would only begin signing contracts for content purchases after launching its brand.

The company intends to use fibre optics for its backhaul which will be leased from network operators such as TM, Time dotCom Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Fiberail and Fibercom.

Nilamas may consider rolling out its own last-mile fibre optic cables to reach homes.

Thrills and spills await as KIX HD launches first on mio TV

Singapore, 14 November 2011 – Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) today announced that a brand new action-packed channel will be available on mio TV Channel 54 starting 15 November.

Called KIX HD, this exciting High Definition channel features high-energy series, blockbuster movies, the best fight events from around the world and epic anime during the day. At night, the channel will give viewers a late-night dose of the best thriller, horror, and suspense movies from Asia and Hollywood. The addition of this channel brings the total number of High Definition channels on mio TV to eight.

“KIX HD is all set to pump up the adrenaline levels at mio TV,” said Mr Goh Seow Eng, Chief, Digital Home. “We are very pleased to be the first stop for this brand new channel which is tailored specifically for Asian audiences, and are certain that our thrill-seeking viewers will quickly sink their teeth into it!”

The channel is a high-definition hybrid of Tiger Gate Entertainment’s existing KIX and Thrill channels. As one of Asia's only genre-specific channels, KIX HD delivers non-stop 24/7 action and thriller entertainment with the clarity of high definition, specially selected for Asian audiences.

KIX HD starts off with a slate of great programmes such as Expedition Impossible (Wednesdays, 9pm). From the producers of Survivor and The Apprentice, Expedition Impossible features teams of ordinary people doing the extraordinary as they compete in the biggest adventure of their lives. The series was one of the highest-rated shows in the United States this summer and is set to send Asian viewers through the most exhilarating journey on TV this fall.

The popular anime series Ghost in the Shell screens Wednesdays at 5pm and the channel has its light-hearted moments with movies such as the stoner action comedy Pineapple Express (24 Nov, 8pm) starring Seth Rogan and James Franco, who was nominated for a Golden Globe award for his performance in the film.

In December, three pulse-pounding TV shows will be featured every Wednesday: Expedition Impossible, Bully Beatdown, where bullied victims finally get revenge; and A Yaksa, a beautifully shot, adrenaline-charged action drama series set in ancient Korea.

Sundays nights are filled with action-packed Hollywood movies Grind (4 December), Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (11 December), A History of Violence (18 December) and Flags Of Our Fathers (25 December).

For its Thrill Nights segments, two blood-chilling movies will be played every night in December, including many Hollywood thrilling blockbusters such as Hellraiser, 30 Days of Night; Asia's best thrillers including Old Boy, Ju-On, Dark Water; critically acclaimed classics such as Children Of The Corn and The Man Who Knew Too Much (by Alfred Hitchcock); and the dark and fascinating City Of Lost Children directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie) and Marc Caro (Delicatessen).

KIX HD is currently exclusively available in Singapore with launches planned in other regions soon.
