Because Cantonese has more freedom as a language, and not restricted as a tool, but rather an as evolving being, as if language itself was given life. Unlike Mandarin, Cantonese provides more leniency for its words, providing more vocabulary to describe different types of situations and emotions.

i must admit the cantonese sense of humor is way more better as in films and dramas but how can you compare to the official language that existed thousand of years ago? mandarin is the mainstream language, it is what represents the identity of Chinese people in China. cantonese, hakka, hokkien, teochew, hailam etc are just regional dialects.
the more languages you can speak, the better it is. |

My mum speak Cantonese and Hakka. I can''t speak but can I understand here and there. My sister went to Chinese school and she speak Mandarin, Hakka, Cantonese and Hokkien. After so many years listening to her and my mum back and forth speaking both dialects, my preference goes to Mandarin.
Mandarin are more soft or in another word, romantic language like french whilst Cantonese a bit rough/kasar. However, it is good to know both Cantonese and Mandarin for the our own benefit. |

Unlike Mandarin, Cantonese provides more leniency for its words, providing more vocabulary to describe different types of situations and emotions. i smell hong kong cantonese drama wannabe..Just like English. Unlike the Mandarin Language. |

If all those chinese dialects grouping not united and forced to use mandarin, There will be independent countries in China that only having, Hokkien (Min), Shanghainese, Cantonese liao wor...if this happened, we probably having few more races in East Asia liao...probably mandarin, Shanghainese minest, cantonese, Tibetan and the exitsting races which which hv their own countries such as Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese & manchurian

The documentary said very clearly. If Cantonese were to be declared as official dialect, there will be restrictions imposed in order to make it standardized across the board. There will be almost no creativity involved as it is strictly not allowed.
So, we still can speak and 'improvise' whatever dialect we are proficient in. It's more of a 'street tongue' than nice wordings. I speak both Mandarin and Cantonese rather well, even KL people thought I'm local... last but not least, please don't condemn other dialects. There is a reason (likely historical, albeit unrecorded) that they exist. If you don't understand or maybe the pronunciation doesn't soothe your ears, just ignore it. Like me... p.s. Of course LYN is full of people speaking Cantonese, because most are from KL or influenced by the so-called 'cool' effect of those 80's Hong Kong movies and started to pick it up, like me. |

QUOTE(Deadlocks @ Apr 12 2011, 01:06 AM) Because Cantonese has more freedom as a language, and not restricted as a tool, but rather an as evolving being, as if language itself was given life. Unlike Mandarin, Cantonese provides more leniency for its words, providing more vocabulary to describe different types of situations and emotions. HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLJust like English. Unlike the Mandarin Language. |

Mandarin is just another dialect not a language.
Chinese dialects are not mutually intelligible to a certain degree with exceptions of course. Some linguistic scholars have argued that dialects like Min Nan, Hakka and Cantonese should be classified as languages and not dialects. FYI, Min Nan comprises of Hokkien, Teochew and Hainanese. Actually Cantonese does have a writing system...look at Hong Kong SAR. unfortunately for the other dialects, they will become extinct in a few generations time. |

Not arguing that it isn't a language nor does it not have a proper writing system.unfortunately for the other dialects, they will become extinct in a few generations time. Even Hokkien has 'derived' into many other 'dialects'. Dialect in another dialect. Penang people say "pek mo" (white hair) but around here in KL/Klang, some say "pek meng". |

There're even words can only be understood if read in Cantonese, if you read it in Mandarin, it wouldn't make sense, but if everyone reads Mandarin, all can understand LOL.This post has been edited by Deadlocks: Apr 12 2011, 10:42 PM |

Writing system if formal, it is the same as in standard Chinese writing.
It is different when we speak it, colloquially, such as "唔" instead of "不" in standard Chinese form. If you speak Cantonese, we always say "mg/唔" instead of "but / 不". 唔 is practically Cantonese. |

I did say Cantonese, Hokkien, etc etc does not have a proper writing system hence it isn't a language. (For those who are gonna say "look at HK", I know now, need not repeat, thank you.) |
