Mandarin is just another dialect not a language.

Chinese dialects are not mutually intelligible to a certain degree with exceptions of course. Some linguistic scholars have argued that dialects like Min Nan, Hakka and Cantonese should be classified as languages and not dialects.

FYI, Min Nan comprises of Hokkien, Teochew and Hainanese.

Actually Cantonese does have a writing system...look at Hong Kong SAR.

unfortunately for the other dialects, they will become extinct in a few generations time.
