Customer just took away the set...
I make a simple summary of comparison on this MCD708 with its little brother MCD700 which is just less than RM900..

1st impression, much powerful than MCD700 with its 50W RMS x 2 while LCD700 has only 25W x 2.. Sound is also much richer with its 5" speaker driver (MCD700 is 4")

The CD tray as expected..STYLISH.. something picture in the review didnt show.. there are blue light surrounding both the amplifier unit and CD player unit.. the light dim slowly after no button is pressed..CLASSY..

The treble is nice with Ribbon tweeter.. not over high as the MCD700.. the treble on this MCD708 is smoother.. The amplifier unit is much much heavier than its brother.. The build of its speaker is BEST.. The only complain on it is the speaker using screw type connector for speaker cable.. but the amplifier side is not.. so too thick cable will not fit it.. sad.gif

Review from HardwareZone:

Philips Introduces New DVD Micro Home Theater Systems
By Daniel Lim
Digital Entertainment | Just Announced
Mon 21 Aug 2006

Introducing the first in this new category, the MCD708. The DVD micro theatre range of products were developed as an answer to consumer's preference for clutter free living areas. This range of products took Hong Kong and Taiwan by storm for its space saving ability and is also very applicable in Singapore where living space is scarce.

The MCD708 also comes with a stew of features that showcases its premium audio ability. Rosewood speakers coupled with ribbon tweeters producing excellent sound along with high-end audio component parts like aluminium die cast cabinet and gold-plated speaker connectors.

Enrich your movie experience!

Play any disc! DVD, DivX, (S)VCD, MP3-CD, WMA-CD, CD(RW) & Picture CD. You name it.
12-bit/ 108Mhz video DAC for sharp image with natural colors. Preserves every detail with this superior Digital to Analogue converter.
Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality. Double the vertical resolution of the image resulting in sharper picture.
Dolby Digital for great cinematic experience

Impressive sound

Class 'D' Digital Amplifier for quality sound performance

Class 'D' Digital Amplifier takes an analog signal, converts it into a digital signal and then amplifies the signal digitally. The signal then enters a demodulation filter to give the final output. The amplified digital output delivers all the advantages of digital audio, including improved sound quality. In addition, Class 'D' Digital Amplifier has greater than 90% efficiency compared to traditional AB amplifiers. This high efficiency translates into a powerful amplifier with a small footprint.

Neodymium Ribbon Tweeter for impressive audio fidelity

The Neodymium Ribbon Tweeter is a monopole tweeter that produces dynamic and crisp sound from the front. It is a feature commonly used in high-end audio systems to reproduce sound with excellent fidelity. Conventional cones and dome tweeters are based on a directional moving coil principle whereas the monopole Neodymium Ribbon Tweeter radiates high frequencies in a full 180-degree radiation pattern. This dramatically increases the width of the sound spectrum in the higher tones and expands the sweet spot zone to deliver wide, crystal-clear, and natural sound even from compact audio systems.

Real rosewood speaker enclosure for perfect sound quality

The speaker enclosure is made of the real, natural rosewood. Its stiffness and density are both excellent acoustic damping properties for perfect quality sound reproduction. Part of the manufacturing process involves hand-making to ensure a super quality finish.

Gold-plated speaker connector for finest signal transmission

The Gold-plated speaker connector ensures better audio signal transmission compared to traditional clickfit connections. It also minimizes the electrical signal loss from the amplifier to the speaker box, resulting in sound reproduction that's as close to reality as possible.

Loudness for bass and treble enhancement

Audio output at 2x50W RMS/1800W PMPO

Design that blends into your interior(s)

High-end component design with stand

The component-designed DVD micro system comes with a stand that features four triangular feet. It can prevent any audio frequency distortion due to vibration, overheating and electromagnetic interference generated from the amplifier and DVD loader. The result is smooth and excellent sound reproduction.

Aluminum die cast cabinet

Stunning design with blue-lightings around the rim. Stylish motorized disc tray mechanism.

The Philips MCD708 is now available at all Philips authorized dealers. RCP S$499.

12-bit/108MHz video processing for sharp, natural images

12-bit Video DAC is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.

Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality

Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

Loudness for bass and treble enhancement

In the sound spectrum, high and low frequencies are relatively less audible to human ears - especially at low volumes. By activating the Loudness feature, the bass and treble will be amplified so you can savor a more balanced sound perception overall.

Total power 380W RMS

Design that blends into your interior(s)

High-end component design with stand

The component-designed DVD micro system comes with a stand that features four triangular feet. It can prevent any audio frequency distortion due to vibration, overheating and electromagnetic interference generated from the amplifier and DVD loader. The result is smooth and excellent and sound reproduction.

Aluminum die cast cabinet

Alumimum die casting is lightweight and can withstand the higher temperatures environments, they offer high strength and rigidity along with good corrosion resistance.

High quality remote control for comfortable use

The remote control is a perfect balance of dimensions and weight. Sleek and ergonomically designed, the bottom cover of remote control features a soft rubber-paint finish to ensure comfort in usage.

Silon, I hardly ever upgrade *LOL* but here quite active lah... probably because stuff is relatively cheaper

Xtremeplace, Echoloft, Yahoo sg and eBay sg are all reasonably active. Singnet classifieds used to be active until they instituted paid classifieds, now dominated by audio shops.

i'm thinking of changing my Pioneer 655A (SACD/DVD-A player, region free) though
