That was the recent FOTA iianm. Ghostblind and some other member updated to it as well, reported super-duper battery life. I think one member's on stock rom lasted for 2 days++

I figured this out too but it might be the reason for the first fail but the second fail ruled out this possibility as I rebooted the phone and went straight to the camera app without launching any other apps....

but 3rd trial didnt show the same problem again, dunno why lol 

By the way, the update software info is

Android 2.2.1
Build 1.84.707

Ah, so you were using the initial ROM then

Cause most stuff you mentioned have already been implemented in past FOTAs like 1.72 and 1.84.61.2

We'll probably need someone from the stock 1.84.61.2 ROM to update to the .707 rom and try it out to see if there's any difference.

Did you flashed any custom ROM/radio/kernel/rooted before you update?

root phone still can update like normal and not lose root and radio s-off right?

Rebooting the phone and going there straightaway might cause the problem too, cause apps like Gallery or Market needs syncing, and will indefinitely access the memory card for its cache and all.

Looks like I have to be more specific 

I rebooted the phone, let it sync and boot up everything that it normally does. Once it is ready, I went into the camera app, snap a pic and there we go, froze lol

Well yes, but most of us here are already using custom ROMs like RevoHD (1.84.61.2) and LeeDroid (1.72) no? So most of us already know and have the core updated stuff, like the new Maps and improved audio.
