Mr. Aza, this is Diong Jia Qi from FAB, currently studying first year in urban and regional planning. I've sent up my documents to appeal changing course to architecture in March. I've track few times at the office but they told they do not know the progress as well. Who should I refer to or what more I can do from Mr.Aza opinion?
*
to whom did you submit it to?

the best person to talk to about changing course within the same faculty is the Dean.

Do I need to be good at mathematics in order to do an architecture course?
*
it certainly helps, a lot. architecture uses math in various ways: mostly in geometry, others in physics. there are more calculations than most people think: cost, quantifying, estimations and so on.

it's fine if u're not good in maths before joining architecture. but there are plenty of other things to learn; being good in maths certainly makes time for u to learn the others.

QUOTE(Rudd @ May 16 2017, 05:48 PM)
Diploma in building.

- what's your comment on this course?
- with only diploma in hand, what would be the job position?
- if continue degree, does the payroll worth it?
*
in context of the built environment, dip in building basically trains u about building, construction, building technologies and so on. normally it qualifies u to become building contractors in the lower class. with a degree, u can climb on to higher class.

is it worth it? well, let's just say, even architects (who sits on the upper tier in the built environment) feel that it's not worth it. if u're in it for the money, then u need to plan ahead to setup ur own business as quickly as possible after graduation. if u plan to work in a firm or company, be ready to work for them for a very, very long time.

I'm wondering if discussing the interior architecture course is right at this forum?
I have few questions:
1. What's the job opportunity will the Interior Architecture Degree venture in?
2. What are the basic study "tools" to be equipped with for this course? Notebook? Ipad?

Hope this is the right thread to ask these questions.
Thanks
*
1. u become interior architect or interior designer. both are practically the same to me, although those taking them insists that they're different.
2. the same with architecture. i dont think people every use pads in architecture. but laptops a must. u dont need a strong laptops in the lower years, so i recommend u just use whatever u have right now, and only acquire a better one by 2nd or 3rd year. others include the usual drawing/drafting tools.

My niece just applied for full time M.Arch at UM and UTM for this Sept 17 intake.

I was surprised that there's an interview for the M.Arch applicants. I wonder what they look for in the prospective M.Arch students.

En Azarimy, can you share your thoughts on this interview?
*
As a rule, we screen everyone through for all architectural intakes in UTM, from diploma to PhD.

What we look for is no longer about qualification, but rather verification of previous works and achievements. This is where candidates must bring all works produced in part 1, log book post part 1 including proof of the 6months compulsory industrial placement.

Others would be to establish other special criteria that the candidate might have.

hello, does anyone know how to prepare a portfolio for an interview? they said to include artworks from high school but I didn't take visual arts or lk during high school so i have no idea what to do. do i show them my sketch or...? please help. thanks in advance!
*
portfolios are generally works that you've done that showcases your abilities, preferably wide ranging or deeply specialized (or both!). usually when they ask for works during highschool, it doesnt necessarily mean for formal classes. it literally means anything you did during highschool years: be it in class itself, at home or some other place in whatever form.

i've written an article on FB that will hopefully help u.

I have a thought lately that if archi students were to progress to Part 2 after completing Part 1, based on the progression pathway and we gotta fulfill the compulsory 6 months practical experience.

So as suggested by sir azarimy, it's better for us to work immediately after our final year of Part 1. But, the questions is, we are not fulfilling the 6 months requirement yet if we start to work before the convocation, right? And it still counts us as an architectural intern.  blink.gif  hmm.gif  hmm.gif
*
are you talking about continuing directly from ending the programme in june 2017 and continuing in feb 2018? that's slighly more than 6 months, which is fine.

LAM counts experience for part 2 as working after having completed/passed all your part 1 courses/subjects. so if u've completed everything in june 2017, your 6 months work could start counting in july 2017.

Dear Azarimy,

My brother receive the interview for architecture programme from both UTM and USM on the same day and time, can he call to change the time and date?

If not, he has to choose only one uni to attend the interview.
*
UTM has two interview dates. Give us (UTM) a call to rearrange to a different so that it wont overlap. Usually I can manage this, but currently Im abroad.

Does the bold statement refer to acquiring one's graduate certificate? Or just merely the ending of that programme/obtaining the final results?
*
when you've finished all your courses, you can get a certificate from the school that you've completed all programmes and can start working. convocation is just a big ass party that celebrates your completion. it doesnt even hand u the actual certificates. these actually come much later with the graduation package which usually includes grad photos and whatever furnished documents. some schools hold convocations within 6 months of u finishing the course. some a month after. but did you know you could postpone your convocation until years later?

basically what i'm saying, convocation is NOT an indicator of when you finished studies. all schools with LAM part 1 will be know full well of the 6 months working requirement before joining part 2, and will have no problem issuing such letters.

if they refuse to issue the letter without reason, u can write to us (CAAEM) officially and we will look into the matter.

Hi Azarimy,

Can diploma holder (unrelated to architecture) from private uni apply for UTM Space architecture degree part-time?

In my case, Creative Multimedia.

No, because we havent opened part time architecture degree under UTM SPACE 😂.

But if we have, then yes. But u might still have to start from 1st year.

I mean like, for instance, some of the facilities in an architecture school are not fully provided for the students etc. and we can like report (?) to the LAM guys? But there should be a list of guidelines and stuff that LAM prepares for the schools, isn't it? And do we get to see the list or some sort?

ah yes, we do have a checklist. i dont have it with me right. let me dig first.

and yes, do write directly to us:

Just wondering, for MArch in USM, I believe it is not accredited yet by LAM. If it passes the accreditation after enrolment, will the degree recognised as LAM Part II?
*
We recognize based on point of graduation, not enrolement. Meaning if you enroll now into an unaccredited programme, u can still be accredited as long as u graduate once the school becomes accredited.

But it also means if u join into an accredited programme, but later become unaccredited for whatever reason and u graduate after it expires, u will not be accredited.

We had a few students who enrolled into our programme but would have graduated a year earlier before the scheduled accreditation. They happily deferred their semesters to ensure they graduate within the accredited period 😂

Thanks Mr Azari. Only two universities currently accredited MArch with equivalent for LAM Part II in Malaysia right now (2017-2019). How long does it take for the accreditation process? Is there any advantage taking the postgrad degree from UK? My daughter has got places there (one already recognised the other has visited status).
*
The CAAEM committee just sat for a meeting today. You see the result for the visited schools in a few days.

The accreditation process is done by sending a Visiting Panel (VP) to the school to evaluate their programme. This takes 2 days. Then they will produce a report and convene inthe CAAEM meeting to discuss the outcome. This usually happens once every quarter.

The results will appear on the website within 2 weeks.

What can be slow is the state of readiness of the school in applying for accreditation. Some schools take years to be ready. But once the VP visited the school, the process is pretty clear.

Quick one,
Appreciate if you guys could recommend autocad courses/classes (to be draughtsman).

Are u or will u be studying architecture? Coz autocad are taught as part of the syllabus. No need to spend RM600-1000 to learn something that u will learn (and master!) eventually.

planning to take it(autocad) as stepping stone, once complete then see whether to pursue AR/ID or qs-ing.
Have interest in both, but need to be certain before making the long term commitment.

currently holding degree in finance laugh.gif totally not related laugh.gif
*
if u have money and time to spare, go for it. else, i dont recommend it as AR or ID will have autocad training embedded in them. i believe most QS programmes would have as well, as it increases their graduates marketability.

i run autocad courses in JB if u're are around here.

QUOTE(byefghi @ Jul 15 2017, 08:59 PM)
Hi,
according to the LAM website, only a few UK architecture degrees are currently accredited by LAM. Let's say I'm going to Liverpool for architecture degree this year, but the university is not in the list. If LAM starts to list  Liverpool as one of the accredited universities next year, would I be exempted for LAM Part I? Or not? Do you by any chance know when will they release  the whole list of recognized universities?

Also, do you know Liverpool School of Architecture (University of Liverpool) ? Is it considered a good university for architecture? I am currently in a dilemma now cuz I dunno whether forking out such a large amount of money to study in the UK worth the money or not.

Thanks for advance if you could clear my doubts!
*
the list published on LAM website is the full list. what you see is everything. it is updated as soon as a result for a visited school is available, so do check every now and then.

it doesnt matter when u enroll into a school. when it comes to validation, it only matters the year when you graduate. for example, you went to liverpool this year (not yet validated). but a month before you're supposed to graduate, liverpool was granted validation, and you will graduate with full LAM validation.

but if you enroll to another validated school this year, but later fell out of validation a month before graduation, you're screwed.

liverpool is a good school. however they have yet to apply for validation. doesnt mean they're bad, though. in my opinion, if u plan to work in malaysia or continue for part 2 locally, stick to the validated list. it'll save u a lot of hassle. most msian sponsors will also stick to LAM list.

You mentioned that there is a part time degree for bachelor of architecture programme.

Do you have the information about such programme like the university, entry requirements, course curriculum, duration of the programme?

Appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance.

it hasnt started yet. UTM plans to conduct it in 2018, but there are no news on it yet. the course curriculum will be the exact mirror of the full time programme. you can browse it on UTM FAB webpage.
