It's September now, my boss will talk to me again on my increment soon. Last year she discussed with me in November, a leap of RM 700. RM 2.8k to RM 3.5k (exclude other allowances).

Not sure what is she going to offer me this year, hopefully a huge leap. Too bad I don't have negotiating skills, though I'm in HR dept. sweat.gif Joined last year January, I still consider myself a junior staff... sad.gif
*
so currently you are being paid RM3.5k?

Yea that's my basic. I have parking allowance and car benefits (though no car), around RM 600 and some other additional allowances. smile.gif

that's a good pay, I don't think you are considered a junior staff anymore

in the current job that I am working now, in order to have similar pay as yours (plus the allowances as well) they need to be in team lead position, which requires at least 2 years of exp

got a dude here working 4-5 yr, I guess his salary is more or less same as yours, but you just started work in Jan last year, so, be proud of yourself biggrin.gif

in certain IT fields such as service desk (helpdesk), if you don't hop, the only thing you can do is sit there waiting boss giving you chances, which depends on various other parameters including non-performance related (office politics)

for young people under the age of 30, it is encouraged to hop between jobs at reasonable interval, time is more precious than money at this point in life. If you find that your boss can't provide the opportunities you want, and that you have reached saturation in your learned stuff, then it's time to move on.

gain different exposure, learn both technical and management skills, make it as rojak as possible, is one of the path leading to becoming a manager.

I somewhat feel that, the more specialized you are in certain field, the harder it will be for you to start your own business, should you want to be your own boss one day wink.gif

normally it's 4k and above for L1 but with some experience required. So I guess you need to be really prepared for the interview and stand out among candidates who has previous experience...Why don't you try Internal Job transfer (I'm assuming you're working in the same company as I am since you're pretty active in that thread wink.gif )
I have seen many people that got transferred from Service Desk to Back office support (Wintel, Unix, Network) and I personally know a few of them who have progressed well in their career today smile.gif
*
lol already throw letter liao

few reasons

- without a fulltime job, I got more time to concentrate in studying for the courses mentioned
- feel that current job is a waste of time, although I can flip the e-book during work hours, but that greatly impact the efficiency
- current salary is not that high, so I can afford to risk losing them for few months without hurting much

And also, for internal job transfer, talk is easy, but after seeing how things going here, I got the feeling that its harder than applying from outside smile.gif

I won't demand RM4k from the start, got RM3k above as the basic, I am more than happy.. for as long as it is higher than current base pay

Thanks for the reply  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif . I've received a lot of interview ( > 15) recently but 90% of it is a helpdesk position. That's what drive my friends to advised me to just take the offer and bare for 1 year regardless of the pay. Fresh grad still a fresh grad ...  sweat.gif  sweat.gif  sweat.gif

don't you feel that you have wasted all your time, effort, money for all these certs you have, yet you are only offered a RM2k job?

I am currently a helpdesk-er too, my first drawn basic already RM2.3k, and I don't even have 1 of these certs you mentioned, so ask yourself, would you be satisfied with just RM2k salary? smile.gif

I have a friend who have CCNA, freshgrad, is earning RM2.6k basic in doing L1 network support job. I think you can get much higher starting than him smile.gif

my opinion for you is to stay away from those helpdesk job offers, keep on looking for more jobs, especially for jobs like network support, server admins, database admins, etc. Even if they offer you RM2k for one of these positions, it is at least better than being a helpdesk despite the pay is the same

*
oh, not a thing, because I myself also sort of looking down upon myself for working in that position.. I feel that I am "underutilized", hence I will be out of this job field very very soon~

even myself also not really satisfied with my current pay, let alone the offer Irzani get which is even lower..

Problem Manager ≠People Manager role in HP smile.gif Just like a Project Manager, Incident Manager....these are Individual Contributor role. Not people manager. Pay band is different.
So PhakFuhZai your assumption is incorrect wink.gif

IMO, although there are differences, but it won't be too much of difference between individual manager and people manager

many people manager are lack of specialized technical skills, and some of them do not even have ITIL, in many cases, a manager with professional certs will always have higher pay than those who is not

An unemployed fresh Master post-grad (2 years unrelated experiences - cashier, clerk, etc), with > 10 Microsoft certifications (MCITP, MCPD,MCTS ... and so on), ITIL v3, Comptia (Sec+) and etc,  and lastly from EC-Council (CEH) is looking for a job . Recently, he/she got a lot of offers from companies for a help-desks positions and the offer is around RM 2.0K - 2.8K.

My questions:

1) Will you take the job if the company offer the same benefit and salary to the other candidates which are the real fresh grads (no prof cert and average CGPA)
2) If you doesn't mind about the same benefit and salary which your mission is to grab the experiences first, but later you have been informed that you need to sign for 2 years contracts, will you take it?

Thank you  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif
*
2 year contract for a helpdesk position eh? for me I won't accept..

with that kind of certs, you can try to apply to be a technical consultant/trainer at companies like Redynamics Asia, Iverson etc etc.. If you aim for hardcore technical positions, go for Wintel, network engineers, etc etc

on a side note, the experience you gained through the helpdesk job won't benefit you much in the long run, and also, why would you want to compete with the rest of the freshgrads, diploma holders, school leavers, and so on? Even a person with no technical background can become a L1 helpdesk, so go figure what kind of thing you can learn through the helpdesk job. Not that I despise helpdesk, but I believe you deserve much more than this.
