ordinary pap smear only look at cells placed on the slide by the doc/nurse doing the smear.
if you get a poorly collected smear- contaminated heavily, dried up slide with cells all curled up, over enthuthiastic scrapping with thick layers of overlapping cells, you can imagine how inaccurate the report is going to be. A better way now is to do the liquid based cytology, the doc/nurse just collect as much as possible the cells and let the lab spin down the cells and spread them out nicely for better visualisation and more accurate examination of the cells. Has anybody done this?It has been available for few years already in the market. |

QUOTE(~Mew~ @ Jul 13 2011, 12:42 PM) This thread is dead? Wanted to post about my first pap smear done at BP lab the other day but forgotten about it till I saw this thread up here again. I intend to go for a pap smear this month at BP lab, anyone been there for pap smear? wonder how much do they charge... Anyway, it's RM50 if you do a pap smear ONLY, but if you take any of their normal blood test, it's RM40 for the pap smear. |

QUOTE(cathy82 @ Jul 14 2011, 01:27 PM) Should be around that. I'm not sure. Might be cheaper since they will be charging for consultation also. It's best you just call them up and ask how much they charge.Like if I go to my gynae, she'll charge RM60 for consultation already, if I do a pap smear for RM50 then it will come out to RM110 total. BP Lab will have a doctor to go thru your results after it comes out and have a consultation as well. |

Hi, is this thread still active?
Can anyone tell me what does it mean by The smear is satisfactory for evaluation. Endocervical cells are present. There are reactive cellular changes associated with inflammation. Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. No monilia or trichomonas identified. Inflammatory smear. Thank you. |

I doubt anyone here would know, unless they are a doctor themselves.and doctor gave vagina pills. When we get our pap smear results back, the doctor should explain what is wrong, I doubt you would blindly accept consuming pills without knowing what's the purpose of it either. Besides, what in the world are 'vagina pills'? |

QUOTE(munkeyflo @ Jun 9 2012, 08:11 PM) Why not ask the doctor what is wrong? I doubt anyone here would know, unless they are a doctor themselves. The reason ur doc gave u the vaginal tablet is because the report said: "There are reactive cellular changes associated with inflammation." if u read the tablet name and search online, it'd mostly b an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory tablet. When we get our pap smear results back, the doctor should explain what is wrong, I doubt you would blindly accept consuming pills without knowing what's the purpose of it either. Besides, what in the world are 'vagina pills'? and the reason ur doctor wants u to repeat the smear after 6 months is because: "ATYPICAL squamous cells of UNDETERMINED significance." and since inflamed epithelial cells of the cervix gave an atypical looks under microscope, which would b similar to that of earliest stage of Ca. cervix, but in a GREAT NUMBER. And since its of UNDETERMINED SIGNIFICANT, the atypical squamous cells in ur cervix is very likely due to inflammation, nothing else. But ur doctor doesnt want to take the risk, so he/she asked u to follow-up again after 6 months, if by that time, inflammation reduced, and PAP smear back to normal, then its ok. Dont worry, by the looks of it, it showed ur doctor knows exactly wat he/she is doing and is taking a very good care of you. Dont worry too much, even if it is positive after 6 months, the treatment would most probably be just a simple biopsy, because he/she would hav caught it very very early and will still be 'carcinoma-in-situ', which means the atypical epithelial cells have not yet crossed the basement membrane, so a simple biopsy would be able to remove all the atypical cells... One important thing is, if u can feel any growth of tissue in ur cervix during these 6 months, even as small as 1 mm, go back to ur doctor right away... And next time, if at all, try to avoid aggressive sexual intercourse 7 days before ur PAP smear.. cause tat itself may cause injury to cervical cells -> inflammation. For ur info, I m a doctor... and to answer another member's question, 'vaginal pill' is just a pill to keep inside the vaginal instead of taking it orally... |

Thank you for your explanation.
How accurate is the test if we still having period? That day when I did the test was my forth day of period. But it consider already clean. However after the test, few hours later there are bleeding coming out. Is that normal after the test, or my period still continue to flow? |

Good to have a doctor here to explain and clear things up.
As for best time to pap smear, I was told it's around 10th-20th days of the menstrual cycle. |

QUOTE(WindowsVista @ Jun 11 2012, 12:31 PM) Thank you for your explanation. Ur welcome..How accurate is the test if we still having period? That day when I did the test was my forth day of period. But it consider already clean. However after the test, few hours later there are bleeding coming out. Is that normal after the test, or my period still continue to flow? munkeyflo has answered ur question... and tat is exactly wat is recommended... 10-20th days of menstrual cycle But as long as the flow is light at the time the PAP smear is taken, then tats fine.. the reason being is we dont want the flow to contaminate the PAP smear, other than tat, its fine... and since the pathologist did not write contaminated slide, then ur smear was ok.. And if the PAP smear ccouldnt b taken due to heavy flow, ur doctor would definitely tell u tat and would ask u to come back after 10+ days later.. Its most probably ur period still continue to flow... cause when taking PAP smear, we dont injure to the cervix or the vaginal wall, its just a simple scraping the most superficial layer of the cervical epithelium cells... |
