Hie there,
Just gone through lowyat health forum, wow, so much information here. Just to introduce myself, I am just a medical fresh graduate from IMU, waiting for government to post me to work in government hospital.
To clear some doubts here, yes, as someone has mentioned above, the Malaysian clinical practise guideline (called CPGs in medical field) recommended any women who are sexually active to do PAP smear.
About the frequency of doing PAP smear, it depends on the result of the first test. If it is HSIL, LSIL (which basically means STRAIGHT forward abnormal) then the doctor will do a colposcopy (a magnifying machine to examine cervix) to further investigate the cervix to check for malignancy.

So if the first result came back as ASCUS (not definite - can be normal / abnormal). This case happens normally when cervix is infected and there are white cells and these cells cloud the results. If you get ASCUS in the first result, then you HAVE to get another PAP smear in 6 MONTHS time. From then on, the frequency depends on the second result.

And, of course, if you get a NORMAL result, then you need to continue doing it annually for 3 years, then if all 3 were normal, then you continue with the regime of ONCE in 3 YEARS.  (bear in mind that if some abnormal results POP up in the middle of the routine, further investigations are required).

Yes, test can be done in LPPKN, not more than RM10, government subsidise mah.

A normal (tradisional) PAP smear cost RM40-60. A newer technique where no slide is used, where the samples are brush off in a bottle of liquid to be sent to the lab is more expensive, it costs about RM100 above.

Hope this piece of information helps.

questions:

does anyone recommend to go to the government's hosp? i know it's subsidized but after a few subpar experience with the dental department, i'm being very skeptical with all the other departments and clinics as well.

any members have any good gynecologist to recommend? if you have, please state the clinic, charges and doctor names. thanks.

-
anyway, heard about this before from my mom. she goes for a check-up annually at clinic leong, puchong. a male gynae and charges for rm50. not sure if the price had change now. pap smear is now highly recommend as one of the hk celeb - anita mui passed away from cervical cancer.

If you want a lady gynae...Try Dr Delilah's clinic in SS19. She's from SJMC, and my friend said she's quite good. rclxms.gif
Location: No. 73, Jalan SS 19/6, 47500 Subang Jaya.
Tel : 03-56319007 (not sure if they're still using this number though. Anyhow, you can still go to the place to check it out)

Alternatively, you can try Dr Sharad's Women Specialist Clinic in SS15. I went there - he was very attentive to all my questions and needs and gives good advice. His prices are a little steep though, but he's good. nod.gif
Location: No. 24, Ground Floor, Jalan SS15/4D, 47500 Subang Jaya. (Along the banks' row in SS15, impossible to miss it, the sign board is in bright purple)
Tel: 03-56316631

Good luck! smile.gif

**edited to list address, hope this helps! Remember: Prevention is better than cure!

Nope, indeed Pap smear should NOT be done on virgins, as the procedure may injure the hymen. The risk of one getting HPV infection and hence cervical cancer is virtually negligible if she has not been sexually exposed. A gynaecologist from KKWCH Singapore once said during a medical talk that if a married woman is HPV positive, while both the husband and the wife denies any sexual intercourse with any other person whether is it present or past, one of them must have not been faithful.

I agree with kheechun. For Virgins just wanting to do general gynae check up can check through urine test (check for urinary tract infection) or blood test that detects cancer cells. something like that... smile.gif
