hi bros, im wishing to purchase the new mbp real soon!
but i need advice whether to upgrade the RAMS from apple store or upgrade by my own?

and is it worthy to up the 750GB HDD to 128GB SSD, which means ill have much lesser memory by 622 GB to use?
the 128GB SSD is now at an additional RM305 only compared to 240gb SSD at almost 2k.

and does our mbp overall performance count by memory (RAMS) + types of drive (HDD or SSD) or
does the amount of space in your drive affects the performance too?

Upgrade yourself, price is cheaper and you get to keep the 2x2GB ram.

Dunno what brand/controller SSD Apple is using. I think Toshiba. Might be a better idea to get your own Sandforce chipset based SSD such as the OWC or Corsair or OCZ Vertex 2. I dunno whether 128GB will be enough. Personally the min I would go to is 256gb.

Maybe put the 750GB in an external Thunderbolt case or perhaps in an optibay, in place of the Superdrive.

Depending on what you do , 4GB is quite a lot of ram already, the SSD will make a much bigger difference in speed. Just look at the MBAs, slow CPU but SSD makes it seem so fast.
*
so does purchasing straight from OWC website from US be ok?
they do have a promo for the new mbp, OWC 8GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory Kit (2 x 4GB matched memory modules) – $88.99 (with factory module trade-in rebate)
so this price is considered cheap right? compared to apple store's price.

u mean we can purchase a Thunderbolt case already to use it as an external HDD ?

im using it mostly for PS and LR, ya i wanna get an SSD too, but the price is still abit high, and they say that its dropping bit by bit every day, just like LCD TV.

Ok bro. thanks alot for the info.

btw, have u decided whether to get the new mbp yet?

QUOTE(soonwai @ Feb 25 2011, 03:36 PM)
The ram, just get locally, I'm using Corsair 2 x 4GB, only RM125 each from LYP. Easier for warranty just in case. Save on the postage from US.

Thunderbolt case, don't have yet, but I think should come out soon.

Just get the 750GB and wait for awhile for the SSD to drop.

Will have to decide by Monday, that's when the Apple SG guy will call me back to confirm if I'm going to return it. Still undecided at the moment. Looking at benchmarks of the new CPUs. Hoping a review will come out over this weekend. It's more the inconvenience of not having a MBP for 2-3 weeks that's preventing me from going for the new one immediately.
*
how much they taking back the 15-day-old mbp for?
still no reviews over whether the SB i7 2.3GHz quadcore will outperform Arrandale i7 2.8GHz dual core?

Apple is giving me a full refund. It's actually 20 days old if you count from the date I ordered or 11 days from the date I recvd it.

Geekbench has some benchmarks. Based on those the new MBPs trumps the older ones royally. But of course, it's just an artificial benchmark.

That's right. Don't forget, aside from warranty, you also get telephone technical support. I don't use the phone support but I heard it's very good. Some ppl even treat it as a suicide hotline, general counselling or just someone to talk to when you're feeling lonely.
mostly the operators are gals or guys??? =P

I'm using Crumpler Dreadful Embarrassment. It's a big bag with a padded compartment for the MBP. The MBP itself is naked just as Steve Jobs intended it to be.
*
how much u bought it for bro?
btw is Booq brand bags good?
and if your 17" mbp is 15.4" wide, the bag u buy must be at least bigger abit or you can buy a just-right size?

cos i just received my mbp today, so thinking of buying a protection case/ bag for it.

Unable to recall exactly. About RM550, I think. I bought it just before Crumpler moved from KLCC to Pavvy, they had a 10-15% sale then.

Buy a bigger one cos you're not only carrying your MBP, right? Got other stuff to lug around too.
*
yea definitely will get bigger one to put in mouse + keyboard n stuff.
regret abit for buying 17" instead of 15", alot nice brands only offer up to 15" for their laptop bags. sad.gif

Added on March 8, 2011, 12:12 amhi bros,

just received my custom order 17" 2.3Ghz mbp today.
only took 7 days including weekends for it to arrive.

but the thing is, when i opened the DHL cardboard box, the white mbp box is not in perfect condition.
the middle part of the box is bulging out like the box is too small for it and the box itself is like already been misfolded.
when i took the unit out, there's little black dusty dots on the mbp even with the protective film on it.
and the aluminum side of the trackpad is abit uneven, like it's not properly produced and also a stain on the side of the keyboard
which i had to remove with cellotape.

may i know if this is normal as its been shipped from china or may be a display unit like what my fren has said?
sorry bout these questions as this is my 1st time owning a macbook pro, but just that i dont wish to get a not-so-good
unit after spending so much money on it! sad.gif

Forgot to add that mine came from Shanghai. Also a CTO.

Did yours come from Shanghai also?
*
yes my order came from Shanghai too as its CTO.
if i take pictures and complain to Apple, will they take action?
and usually how long will it take for a new unit to be fully charged?
mine turned green light with less than 2 hour chargiing, is this considered normal?

Dunno what they'll do but I think you should complain in any case.

All depends on how much charge the battery had when you started charging it. You should use for a few days and then do a battery calibration.

Out of curiosity, how many charge cycles does your batt have? You can glean this info from System Profiler.
*
umm i dono yet cos i havent start up the unit yet cos my fren asked me to charge the unit for 24 hours for the 1st charge.
is the 1-day charge before use necessary?

bro you're saying to match the serial number of the AC adapter and the notebook to see if its the same unit?

Grats. I got myself a free 50 AUD coupon for complaining as well. Courier service tried to sent my things 3 times and kept putting the not around card at my house while I am in the house. Couldnt stand any longer, called them up to get a  refund. But they delivered in the end, Apple said they'll give me a 50 AUD discount for the inconvenience. Woot. And i get the refund.
*
lol. shuda asked for rm100 coupon if i knew ...hahaha...
but it was the courier's fault right?

Yeah. Cause the last time they came early in the morning around 8am. When I was asleep. He dint left a note, but I checked the tracking number. They said they did leave a note. So I call them up and ask if they'll resend it later in the day. They say no. Damn fed up, called Apple up ask for refund, they say ok, will process it. So I went out and buy what I ordered. Who knows the same day at 4pm they sent it here. Apple called me the next day and ask me about everything. Told them what happened and poof. 50 AUD coupon. lol.

yesterday got new MB Pro 13 2011 - straight upgrade to SSD OCZ Vertex 2 120gb & Muskin 8gb memory. But system freezing, restarting, corrupted etc. So sad last nite.

Today refer back to vendor - after checking found faulty on memory & SSD. 1 to 1 them. Sial both upgrade also kena.

Now i'm enjoying my silent MB.
