Just called Apple SG for a refund of my 15 day old MBP. Sounded optimistic over the phone.

Soonwai, since you've just got yours, I don't think it is worth to get the upgraded MBP unless you can unload your to some with a bit lost of money. The upgrade I guess is more to those buying to replace their outdated MBP (like me hehe), if I were you, I'll be hold on to it until Apple comes up with totally new redesigned MBP which I guess will be out end of the year or next year. I'm not going to replace my C2D 2006 MBP just yet, it still have pretty more years to go.
*
Thanks for the advice. Frankly, that's what I've been telling myself also but I guess I needed affirmation from someone else. I called Apple to explore the possibility of a return and the operator sounded optimistic but if I can't get a refund from Apple then I think I will follow your advice and wait till next year.

Yeah, I think more like 4 weeks ago already no stock. Went to Machines, Switch, MacStudio, all don't have. I guess they all knew this was coming. But if want cheaper one can ask for demo units.

hi bros, im wishing to purchase the new mbp real soon!
but i need advice whether to upgrade the RAMS from apple store or upgrade by my own?

and is it worthy to up the 750GB HDD to 128GB SSD, which means ill have much lesser memory by 622 GB to use?
the 128GB SSD is now at an additional RM305 only compared to 240gb SSD at almost 2k.

and does our mbp overall performance count by memory (RAMS) + types of drive (HDD or SSD) or
does the amount of space in your drive affects the performance too?
*
Upgrade yourself, price is cheaper and you get to keep the 2x2GB ram.

Dunno what brand/controller SSD Apple is using. I think Toshiba. Might be a better idea to get your own Sandforce chipset based SSD such as the OWC or Corsair or OCZ Vertex 2. I dunno whether 128GB will be enough. Personally the min I would go to is 256gb.

Maybe put the 750GB in an external Thunderbolt case or perhaps in an optibay, in place of the Superdrive.

Depending on what you do , 4GB is quite a lot of ram already, the SSD will make a much bigger difference in speed. Just look at the MBAs, slow CPU but SSD makes it seem so fast.

Update to my refund:
Apple SG called back in, like 15mins, and approved my refund. No penalties, no restocking fee, they'll even arrange for the pickup of the MBP.

Problem is now I can't decide if I should do it. That means waiting again for the new one to ship. It's 7-10 days ship time for a CTO MBP at the moment. That means 2 weeks at least before I get it. I got so much work to do.

So ppl, should I do it?

What are the cons of the new MBP?

I'm concern about battery life. Is it really less?

How fast is a 2.3GHz Sandy Bridge Quad compared to a 2.8Ghz Arrandale when only 2 cores are being used? I doubt if I will be using all 4 cores much.

so does purchasing straight from OWC website from US be ok?
they do have a promo for the new mbp, OWC 8GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory Kit (2 x 4GB matched memory modules) – $88.99 (with factory module trade-in rebate)
so this price is considered cheap right? compared to apple store's price.

u mean we can purchase a Thunderbolt case already to use it as an external HDD ?

im using it mostly for PS and LR, ya i wanna get an SSD too, but the price is still abit high, and they say that its dropping bit by bit every day, just like LCD TV.

The ram, just get locally, I'm using Corsair 2 x 4GB, only RM125 each from LYP. Easier for warranty just in case. Save on the postage from US.

Thunderbolt case, don't have yet, but I think should come out soon.

Just get the 750GB and wait for awhile for the SSD to drop.

They have implemented / adopted a new battery testing regime that reflect more accurately to the real world usage. And hence, the shorter battery life as stated on the box / website / technical sheet.

Will have to decide by Monday, that's when the Apple SG guy will call me back to confirm if I'm going to return it. Still undecided at the moment. Looking at benchmarks of the new CPUs. Hoping a review will come out over this weekend. It's more the inconvenience of not having a MBP for 2-3 weeks that's preventing me from going for the new one immediately.

I doubt they know, there was a shortage remember? They would normally wind down production by December, while the new ones go into production, so limited units of the older machines go into the market just in time for the new ones to come in

Didn't know what to expect when I called. Frankly I was surprised that they said OK. I'll have to ship it back to them first. I guess they want to check it before finalising the return. That's Apple's customer service for you which, so far and for all the times I've dealt with them, has been exceptional.

Ok, thanks, that alleviates one of the things that had me worried for a bit. By far, when it comes to a notebook, battery life is the main concern for me. The current MBP that I have is great, 6+ hours is just enough to get me through the day. In the past 8 months, I think I've only run out of juice once or twice before the end of a day.

Apple is giving me a full refund. It's actually 20 days old if you count from the date I ordered or 11 days from the date I recvd it.

Geekbench has some benchmarks. Based on those the new MBPs trumps the older ones royally. But of course, it's just an artificial benchmark.

That's what I thought too but a few days before CNY my friend went looking for a new MBP and none of the shops had stock. However the online Apple Store had it as 24hrs Shipping which implies that Singapore has stock. So the question is, was stock so constrained that SG could not spare our shops any MBPs or was there a conscious effort on the part of our retailers not to stock even one unit of the MBPs. In any case I sold mine to him and ordered a CTO unit. That's how I ended up with a 11 day old MBP so close to the launch of the new one.

Yes but don't have to buy immediately, got 1 yr to do it. Look for cheap, but not too cheap, ones on eBay. Just got to choose the seller carefully perhaps with some advice from US forums. I think ACPP quite important as repairs to a MacBook is usually very expensive.

i7? Nice. Dunno about sleeves. How about a nice Crumpler bag?

Is it stock config or CTO? How long do you have to wait till it ships?

No, don't do that. Probably won't boot up. Even if it does, things won't work. I mean, you probly don't have drivers for the new Intel graphics or Thunderbolt in there.

Fraid you'll have to back it up and do a fresh install and then transfer your stuff back in.
