Ashley Cole 'surprised’ to be voted England player of the year

Cole was voted England player of the year in a poll on the FA website, after a year in which he was one of the few players to emerge from the World Cup with his reputation untarnished. Steven Gerrard came second in the poll, with Adam Johnson third.

The Chelsea left-back has had a turbulent relationship with supporters during a career in which his private life has frequently been in the spotlight. He is also reviled by Arsenal fans over the circumstances of his departure in 2006.

“It came as a big surprise to me,” he said. “I never thought I would get this award with all the other players who were in the running. I never thought it would be me, but I’m very proud and thankful to the fans.”

Cole’s unlikely transformation from pariah to fans’ favourite is all the more surprising given that when interviewed on ITV before the last year’s FA Cup final, Cole admitted he would prefer to win the double with Chelsea than the World Cup with England.

The award comes two years after Cole was booed by the Wembley crowd in 2008 when his mistake led to a Kazakhstan goal.

QUOTE(bo0t @ Feb 8 2011, 09:44 AM)
hope CA find the solution before fulham game .. i do think we must drop one of them n playing like

----anelka---malouda---
----  -torres/drog--------

bcos in malouda we can get at least crosses from the left, thru ball .. until now, ashley cant work alone on the left, he need someone backup when attackin' .. or else play 4-2-2-2

iva---luiz---jt---ashley
----essien--lamps-----
nico-------------malou
----torres-drogs-------
*
4-3-1-2

Torres-Kalou
Anelka
Malouda-Ramires-Lampard
Cole-Terry-Luiz-Bosingwa
Cech

I don't want kalou to play behind torres because Christmas tree's attack is too poor.
Kalou is lively in front, who know it could turn out a scary attacking line?
Drogba must be bench. He is horrible shakehead.gif
You will be surprise to see me not including essien right? Yes, no place for Essien. He need some rest, he has been doing a lot of wrong passes all the time. Cost us some important possession.
Lampard go back to right side, Supporting Bosingwa in attack.

If we go back to 4-3-3, where's Anelka gonna play? I really love Anelka when he's playing behind two strikers. He didn't do anything against Liverpool because our strikers aren't combine well. I am sure it will be better. Give Torres some time.
So, I am still preferring 4-3-1-2.

Not bad but Lampard,Essien's form is worrying.
Anelka is doing good behind the two striker. IMO, he did prety well against Liverpool too. Just our attack didn't combine well.

Guss Hiddink poised to come back to Chelsea.

For Fulham game, I would prefer this lineup; (4-1-3-2)

Cech
Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Cole
Ramires
Malouda, Lampard, McEachran
Torres, Anelka

With Ramires holding back, I'm much more relax compare to Mikel. Perhaps McEachran can support him a little. Malouda goes right, yes he can do cut-ins from right side and force the CB to block him. Torres be target man, Anelka SS.

QUOTE(madfag @ Feb 8 2011, 08:50 AM)
kerpy said it right. and also some pundits before the show.

our midfield isnt supplying the ammunition our strikers need. first of all, malouda usually helps with the crossing and build up play but he is on the bench due to his horribly inconsistent form.

nico shined in the sunderland game but couldnt do nuts against an organized pool defense. maybe we should pack our midfield with more players since the likes of torres and drogba arent players who drop deep.

hopefully we'll start picking up points before its too late.
*
what we desperately need is either width, or some creativity in the middle. somehow i still feel ramires with his energizer bunny running, will wreak havoc on teams trying to park the bus. has some creativity up his sleeves too so
who knows how well he can do in a diamond formation. worth a shot, since josh probably won't be 'risked.'

4-3-3 will only work with malouda firing on all cylinders which isn't the case now. but i'd still prefer it because it's our 'bread and butter' formation so to speak, which we flourished with last season.

QUOTE(kucingmainan @ Feb 8 2011, 09:49 AM)
lets bench drogba for next match. he's been silenced for the past few games. i prefer 4-3-3 with Anelka----Torres----Malouda starting.
*
as much as we've all been trying to avoid it, benching drogba should be given proper consideration now. its not just his lack of incisiveness, but he's been giving away possession and breaking down attacks waaaaayy too often for the past 5,6 games.

if we're top of the table with a reasonable lead, perhaps my tone would be different. the thing is we don't have that luxury, hence decisive measures must be taken. carlo showed he had the guts to exclude him against spurs, i'm hoping he'll repeat the trick against fulham.

let torres take his favourite CF position, get some goals, and hopefully light a fire under didier to storm back into form. if it doesn't, well....we can always just keep torres there. that's the best bit about having quality backup smile.gif

i'm fine with malouda on the left, but my vote goes to kalou on the right instead of nico. mainly because he's more of a winger than the frenchman, not to mention his dribbling is more direct.

quite interested about the hiddink recall rumour, to assist carlo. that one might have some legs on it. hmm.gif

I think the problem clearly lies in the team spirit. They all have the talent and ambition to win.

unfortunately, their form and will says otherwise.

hopefully this international break will be of some change in fortune.

sometimes, a little luck can be a boost to the team. everybody needs a little luck sometimes.

now carlo should play torres on his preferred position...then the goals will flow...and we must play with 2 strikers...not 3...so 4-4-2 will be a good choice....i would like to see this lineup...

-------------------------------cech-----------------------------

--ivanovic------------david----------terry-----------a.cole--

--essien------------ramires--------lampard------malouda--

---------------------torres------------anelka-------------------

this is pure 4-4-2......with on right wings..iva will take over..and left flank by either a.cole/malouda......essien can comes in for torres or help ramires to try shoot long-range goals.....ramires...he can goes up, down and supply to both strikers upfront....lampard...will be playmaker......torres - anelka will just wait for the supply or anelka can drop back for assist torress to score......where else terry will be holding centre half..david is capable of defending and attack....like carvalho..score like a striker....haha...so...if they play as wht i mention...i'm sure this team-work lineup is really good for 3 pts consistently...

peace..

except SWP..no difference with our current crop of players isn't it? Malouda, Yuri, Ashley, Josh, Luiz..hehe

Robben is so prone to injury last time, that most probably be the main reason..in return we got 24mils of good money..believe it or not, thats the highest transfer fees received by us doh.gif

sure they have a financial controller aren't they?

Malouda, Yuri, Ashley are still not up to previous standard.

At least Robben, Duff, Joe Cole, SWP can swap side in games. I really like that crop of players and really miss it
