Nice writeup there!

Can have a separate section catering to power users, i.e those who make an effort to tinker with the phone at the root level? Like maybe ROM selection, ROM quality and stuff.

A bugs section?

lol just giving you more work to do.

a very thorough review, but TS, you're a lil bit off to DZ yah? biggrin.gif

anyway, like you said, the major dealbreaker is the Bigger screen and physical keyboard only. that's it. so guys, just choose it according to your likes and lastly, ROOT your ANDROID to unleash the hidden power of either devices! rclxms.gif

^lol ppl should not think that rooting is the 'proper' way to use an android. It's actually very unnecessary if you do not know what you trying to achieve exactly.

Other than radical root-level (ie heavy and intense) cosmetic customization, CPU tuning, added physical feature (eg enabling trackpad wake on DZ), flashing updated radio, everything else runs pretty much the same.

yeah, maybe i likeDZ, and i kinda think y it got less attention inspite of its true capabilities which is comparable to DHD. but im not saying DZ is better than DHD. at some extend, DHD might be better than DZ, but is it worth the higher price? and, is it worth DZ lives under the shadow of DHD? whistling.gif

Rooting is only for those who want to have fun and excitement. Although it's not really necessary like what someone said, yet like I said, I bet those who buy such expensive device will do research and they will know the reasons why many people do heavy customization on their devices.

once i also was comparing these 2 phones and it's a big headache to decide which one to buy (i'm sure a lot of ppl have similar problems). but after comparing both on my own hands, i've decided to go for DHD because i simply like the HUGE screen, 3.7 inch on the DZ is simply TOO SMALL. plus the DZ is SO heavy and bulky. I'm not saying the DZ is not good, i loved it, but there are cons that outweighs the pros.

i like the physical keyboard very much, but the problem with a physical keyboard on a phone is, u really can't use your professional typing skills, i can type SUPER fast on a normal PC keyboard (i'm a pro), but the design and size for a phone's keyboard isn't designed for professional typing, so it's no use to me. plus it makes the phone bulky and it even sticks out of my baggy trousers (like i'm having a boner everywhere i go)

and i like it's overclock capabilities (1.9ghz anyone?) but the point is, i wouldn't be using this much clock speed every time. 1.5ghz on the DHD is just fine by me.

the screen color and sharpness on both are almost the same, but the 4.3 inch on the DHD just slaughters the DZ in every single way. u'll be complaining how tiny the DZ's screen is every time u see it. and the DHD isn't as heavy and bulky as everyone seems to think. it's slim and is a perfect fit for my pockets (because I hate jeans). and it won't scare away girls thinking that i'm a pervert every time i approach them because i'm not having a boner (DZ) on me.

well reviewed there mate..i like the boner thing.. lol

but, i cant see how 16gram (180-164) gram brings much difference to u.. biggrin.gif DHD also looks like a boner, but a rather slate and broad boner. laugh.gif laugh.gif

yes, nobody can type so fast like using the normal PC keyboard. but using the physical keyboard, no doubt its faster than virtual keyboard, and less typing error.

about the display size, 4.3" vs. 3.7" = 0.6" diff. yeah, i agree, big display pleases most ppl. but what i pointed out was, the bigger display space was not totally utilized. using same Froyo 2.2, so same UI, what we get is just a bigger buttons and larger fonts. 3.7" is not tiny, i know many ppl will agree. Coz i dun hear ppl having iphone 4 complaining, at least. ^^

overclock is not necessary to me, coz it will drains battery.

well, DHD i really a good phone, but so does DZ. biggrin.gif

quite detailed review. smile.gif

I am upgraded from a Treo 680 with physical keyboard and I was a bit worry the absence of physical keyboard when I planned to updated to Desire (not HD) but the learning curve is painless but the smaller keypad on the screen of Desire does make typing more prone to errors. But after I upgrade to Desire HD, the typing errors is mitigated by the larger key on the larger screen of Desire HD. Although from paper, it may not be much difference upgrading from 3.7" to 4.3" but in actual use, it makes a lot of difference. At first i find the DHD's screen a bit too big but after getting used to it after using it for few days, I find the Desire's 3.7" too small to be used "comfortably" - my eyes have been spoilt by the larger DHD screen. laugh.gif

The bigger screen does fully utilised by games and especially videos. Watching video on Desire 3.7" screen need to strain my eyes but not DHD's 4.3" screen.

Trust me, 3.7" screen is "tiny", IF you have used a 4.3" for some time. icon_idea.gif Ppl dun complain about 3.7" becoz they have never used a 4.3" device for a longer time. Just like our computer monitor - when the 19" LCD is out, no one will complain about it but now you can see 24" widescreen everywhere, surely ppl will complain about a 19" LCD now if they have used to a 24" widescreen. tongue.gif

smile.gif agree with some of your points.

but im using DHD now, while my DZ still with me..still i dun think the 4.3" screen brings much too me. sometime when i glance back to my DZ, and i turn it on, its really not bad in term of display. and sometime, i feels it looks "sexier" with the slimmer appearance, compared to the broad DHD. laugh.gif

but ya, no doubt, if money is not the constrain, so why not spend more to get a DHD. but for some ppl with budget constrains, dun push too much to get a DHD, while DZ is comparable enough to satisfy yr needs. thumbup.gif

Nice review there...
I'm kinda agree what you said... for A & B selection... game wise DHD, daily usage DZ... no doubts...
4.3 vs 3.7 did make different...but!!! IMO still an acceptable different... kinda disagree wat Cynox said ( no offense ) cant compare 19 inch n 24 inch la...bro... 5 inch different man~ tongue.gif
same time 3.7 DZ cant compare with 3.7 desire as well... caz DZ gt its own physical keyboard... icon_rolleyes.gif
p/s: TS u had actually comparing two different phone >.< physical keyboard with full touch screen...but somehow I did salute for ur effort on both phones... notworthy.gif

lol.. i did this just to assist other ppl who are in confusion either to get a DHD or DZ. i experienced it, i bought a DZ back in Nov2010, but then, i keep on following updates in android world, it seems that DHD is more exciting, so i was kinda regret my choice, until i cant resist my desire then i bought a DHD tho my DZ is still in hands. laugh.gif but after having it, the DHD is not too impressive as it should be. so my objective is just to point out some of my personal review, to assist other. but no offense to both DHD and DZ yah. icon_rolleyes.gif

haha.. no offence taken. I am just making a analogy. i also do agree on hard to compare this 2 quite distinctive phones - one win with big screen while another win with physical keyboard. But for sure both devices are kick-ass. thumbup.gif

Personally I have not touch a Desire Z before so my comment might be biased towards DHD. So read it with a pinch of salt. tongue.gif

lol.. laugh.gif thanks for a feedback anyway.. comments are very welcomed, coz who kws i wrote driven with my frustration of having a "not-so-impressive" DHD, so might be a bit bias too.

Added on January 31, 2011, 5:42 pmand bro cynox, now i'm up and ready to get my hands dirty with my DHD..i mean rooting..hehe.. i landed in yr DHD thread too..i just got another device to explore.. hehe
