Wow,the part about the Kaibil soldiers seems more about idiot stupidity rather than any scientific military training.

I mean, aggression is always welcome in a military force, but excessive amounts of agggression can really backfire, like not knowing when to run when you have to.....

A little bit of so-called "cowardice" is actually beneficial, as it maintains unit integrity and numbers, especially in highly trained (and expensive) special forces groups. It's these outdated notions of valor and bravery may work in some situations, but obviously not applicable in most combat situations.

Is it better to have soldiers that stand and die today (probably for no discernible or immediate benefit) rather than soldiers who can still fight another day?(and probably influence the war in another way?)

Why? We're not at war with Israel, we just don't recognize their existence as a sovereign state.

How do you get in trouble for taking pictures with women from a country that doesn't exist?

BAE Systems Seeks Feedback on MIG-29N Replacement Programme

KUALA LUMPUR --- BAE Systems, which is eyeing Malaysia's MiG-29N replacement programme, is currently seeking responses and gathering information from local companies as well as government agencies on the requirements of the programme and the industry.

Its director, Typhoon Malaysia, Military Air & Information, Ian Malin, said for the past months, the UK-based defence and aerospace company has been engaging with government agencies like Malaysian Investment Development Authority and Malaysia Industry-Government Group for High Technology as well as 20 local companies in various sectors.

"We have been talking with the industry players as well as government agencies to get their feedback and to know specifically what Malaysia wants. We will continue to do so for the next couple of months," he told a media briefing here today.

Among industry options the company could offer included research and development, training, manufacturing, systems integration as well as in maintenance, repair and overhaul, Malin said.

In March, BAE Systems submitted a rough order of magnitude prices of the multi-role combat aircraft Eurofighter Typhoon to replace the 18 MiG-2N aircraft.

BAE Systems will likely be up against three other competitors, including Boeing, French's Rafale and Sweden's Gripen, for the replacement programme. Eurofighter Typhoon is manufactured by BAE Systems and three European partner nations -- Germany, Italy and Spain.

On other note, the company has moved its regional head office to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore, which will help strengthen relationships with existing customers and industrial partners in the region, as well as developing new business opportunities in emerging markets such as Vietnam.

The move underpinned BAE Systems' long-term commitment to Malaysia, in which it has had a presence for over 20 years.

It would allow the company to focus on growing Asian markets, where many governments have an interest in achieving industrial growth through collaborations, technology transfer and inward investment.

BAE Systems, which is a familiar face at the bi-annual Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA), will participate in this year's LIMA from Dec 6-10, 2011.

Of course you can join the Légion étrangère, provided you are as fit as any regular soldier and then some. for joining, you'll just need a valid passport but unlike the old days, where they accept you without question, nowadays the legion always conduct a background check. A french-speaking background is preferred, but not a prerequisite as a foreign recruit will always be assigned a french-speaking partner. After signing up,the recruit will be given a 6 month probationary period and afterwards,if he passes basic training, will serve for a contract of five years.

okay,so much for joining, now the training, that the legion still has the most brutal training regime imaginable such as marching through the desert for up to a week and jungle training for weeks on end. the training was so brutal that it is said that no one passes legion basic training without soaking his socks with blood at least once (from too much marching).Great emphasis is also taken on fitness and obedience, with regular forced marches lasting days and also a high level of marksmanship, with live fire training 3 times a week for 13 weeks.

After passing basic training, recruits will be inducted for specialist training (sniping, Parachuting, communications among others...) which lasts about 14 weeks. Promoted soldiers will attend a NCO course which lasts another 14 weeks. Promotion to officer rank may be possible, but usually officers will be drawn from the regular French Army. Legionnaires will usually be stationed in such exotic locales like French Guyana, Djibouti, Gabon and the Mayotte Islands (a godforsaken island in the middle of the Indian ocean....)

A service contract lasts for five years, afterwards the legionnaire may apply for french citizenship and a legionnaire completing 3 terms ( 15 years ) are eligible for a pension. This is a real elite group, with no more than 8000 legionnaires on active duty.

This list shows the numbers,by nationality,of Legionnaires that have served from 1831 until 1963. (sourced from Wikipedia)
