What kind of deal are we talking here?
Is it like free 10 AAMs for each fighter purchased or what? smile.gif

overall,I think it's a good plan, even to just reduce dependency on US or Russian parts and equipment. But still not so sure of performance though...due to the small numbers currently in operation (I do believe active airframes are less than 100 in service with Swedish Air Force and worldwide)

I wonder if we are able to see the Rafale, Typhoon and Gripen for LIMA 2011.

If I'm not wrong, the Airbus A400M will make an appearance for LIMA.

NSM will be a standard missile for TLDM

(Utusan)
Summary
* Kedah class will be fitted with anti ship weapon system
**2 type of Anti Ship system is being consider that is the Exocet 40 Block II and NSM (Naval Strike Missile)
*** NSM is a clear favourite due to its long range (185km+) and small size where the Kedah can be fitted up to 8 missile
****The modular design of Kedah class will make the upgrade process short in time.

Zero Coverage of Malaysian Airspace?

In the recent seating of Parliament, Minister of Defense Dato' Seri Zahid Hamidi had revealed that there was a total of 2058 intrusion into Malaysian airspace by Singaporean aircrafts.

In a reply to that revelation, Singapore Defense Ministry official Colonel Desmond Tad said that the Defense Ministry of Singapore had replied to those allegations which was inaccurate via a protest note through the Foreign Ministry.

Whilst both side insist that they did no wrong, TnT looked into the affairs of certain defense contractors in the country to find out more about the state of our hardware. Naturally, the equipment of interest would be the country's radar, the frontline of air defense.

Here is what we found through public domain information readily available for those who looked hard enough.

The Royal Malaysian Air  (RMAF) & Ministry of Defense (MINDEF) as early as 2008 announced that a new ground radar defense system contract was awarded to a European company.

But perhaps due to the sensitive nature of the contract, detailed information proved more difficult to obtain.

The Malaysian Government through MOF first issued approval in 1997  for the 'Contracterisation of RMAF Aircraft Maintenance which includes avionics of all RMAF aircraft'.

In 1998, MOF approved Zetro Services to undertake maintenance of all RMAF aircraft avionics (previously carried out by AIROD).

In November of the same year, both parties further signed an agreement for avionics and ground electronics maintenance which resulted in Zetro effectively controlling the contracts for these equipment.

Whilst the contract commenced officially in May 1999, guidelines for the 'contracterisation' was finalised in December of 1998.

The initial term of the contract was from January 1998 to December 2000. It was further extended for another 2 years with another 1 year option for the period of January 2001 to December 2003.

In January 2004, Zetro’s contract was renewed for a 5 year + 5 year option, effectively extending it to December 2013.

That was as far as contract details are concerned.

Sometime during that period, the Auditor's General report had highlighted several areas within the contract that was held by Zetro.

These include, excessive charges for 'Rate of Transportation' in which contractual amount of RM50 was different from those that were billed by Zetro which was between RM150 and RM200.

The Purchase of Test Equipment that was stipulated and required in the contract for maintenance was not adhered to, with Zetro claiming that such investment by them for a 'short' term contract was not reasonable. Having got the contract from 1998 to 2013, one can hardly call that short term. Without this investment, Zetro had depended entirely on OEM and third party vendors thus effectively dissabling themselves as effective contractors which resulted in long periods of parts unavailability and turnaround time.

The Auditor General's report also highlighted the contractors long leash on Late Delivery penalties that was 'overlooked' by contract administrators. It also made clear that the entire contract with Zetro resulting from the 'contracterisation' policy had no affective ceiling amount and lacks clear and precise minimum operational guarantees which allowed the contractor to not meet acceptable standards.

With all these points, and the Singapore Ministry of Defense refuting these allegations by insinuating that there is a serious flaw in our 'eyes  and ears' of Malaysian airspace, it gets even more curious with the deafening silence of parties involved in the maintenance and operations of these radars.

Radars aside, in 1997 Zetro had obtained another contract to upgrade RMAF Trainer aircrafts to the PC7 type Mark II, a product of Pilatus of Switzerland. An audit by the principal was done as a standard requirement and it was revealed that Zetro had only scored a 3% pass. The contract was then awarded to another capable contractor.

With all these alarm bells ringing out loud, it remains to be seen if the sovereignty of our skies are more important or that of the landlord of a building that houses the MINDEF Industrial Defense division (Bahagian Industri Pertahanan).

Our efforts to get confirmation of our report with ZSSB received no positive response. - TnT

Mercury ES (all photos : Trilogy)

Trilogy, a world class supplier of voice communications technologies for the defence sector announced today that it has been selected to provide a sophisticated voice communications capability to the Malaysian Armed Forces.

The prime contractor, Pembekal Alaf Baru SDN BHD, has won the contract to integrate existing and new radio assets across multiple sites within the Malaysian territory. It provides a communications system that is able to extend the range and resilience of radio traffic whilst offering the potential for multi-level and cross domain security features.

Mercury ES will allow the extension of radio communications over IP ensuring that neither range nor geography disrupts those communications, banishing any possibility of a black spot. This guarantee of service allows the Malaysian Armed Forces to optimise its network enabled operations. As the various participants are able to freely share and assess information in real time, they are able to capitalise on their situational awareness to increase mission effectiveness.

"We are delighted to have been selected to work with the Malaysian Armed Forces" said Mark Ellis, Business Development Director, Trilogy Communications. He continued, "This further consolidates Trilogy’s position within the global defence and intelligence communities in the region.”

Mercury ES, a COTS product, is already successfully deployed in a number of countries around the world and completed rigorous assessments during the competition phase of the Malaysian Armed Forces contract. Unprecedented in terms of quality, sophistication and speed, Mercury ES makes information sharing and decision making across organisations easier than ever.

Mercury ES operates on LANs/WANs over terrestrial or satellite-based IP networks. Users can participate in multiple communications simultaneously - including direct, conference and monitor-only. In addition, radios, telephones and other technologies can be linked to the system to provide users with a unified communications control panel.

As a key element of the contract Trilogy will provide training and support of the communications system. Trilogy is looking forward to working closely with its partner in Malaysia, PAB, on the implementation of this project, it’s through life support and future sales of mission critical Mercury ES systems to other military and governmental organisations in Malaysia.

160 anggota MALCON terselamat bedilan bom
2011/07/28

Panglima Markas Angkatan Bersama (MAB), Laksamana Madya Datuk Ahmad
Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin, berkata kejadian itu berlaku ketika
konvoi diketuai Komander MALCON-EAST 6, Leftenan Kolonel Mohd Samin Mohd

British Typhoons whacked India's Sukhois in joint exercises'
Submitted by admin4 on 24 July 2011 - 2:32pm

By N.C. Bipindra, IANS,

RAF Fairford (Britain) : Britain's frontline fighter jet Eurofighter
Typhoon, shortlisted for India's $10.4-billion combat jets tender,
whacked the Indian Air Force (IAF) warhorse Sukhoi in one-on-one dog
fights during bilateral air war games, if Britain's air chief is to be
believed.

"Well, they lost," was Stephen Dalton's response when IANS asked how
the Russia-developed India-manufactured Su-30MKI air superiority jets
performed against the Royal Air Force's (RAF) Typhoons when they matched
their wits during the joint exercises in recent years.

However, he was quick to add that the two aircraft are different in
technologies, and that Typhoons are next generation, and hence there is
no comparison.

Dalton was interacting with IANS at the recently held Royal International Air Tattoo military air show at the RAF base here.

The two aircraft were pitted against each other during 'Indradhanush'
exercises in 2007 at Waddington in Britain and in 2010 at Kalaikunda in
India.

Interestingly, the IAF had claimed in 2007 that Sukhoi's performance
against Typhoon had convinced the RAF of its superiority. "The RAF
pilots were candid in their admission of the Su-30 MKI's observed
superior manoeuvring in the air, just as they had studied, prepared and
anticipated," an Indian defence ministry release had said during the
July 2007 Indradhanush.

It was, however, fair to Typhoon, saying the IAF pilots were impressed with its agility in the air.

Dalton was also all praise for the IAF for training its pilots to put any aircraft they fly to best use.

"The issue is you are comparing technology and people. So, more often
than not, technology can give you a great edge, a great lead. But
actually it is always the people (behind the machines) who make the
difference at the end of the day," he said.

"It is not just how the aircraft did in the air. It is also about how
the individual thinks, how they work, and their willingness to develop
and to experiment.

"I have always found the IAF to be extremely good. Yes, technology is
a significant element, but also the individual is really important in
this," he added.

Dalton also indicated that the IAF inventory of Sukhois, MiGs and Mirages are no match to the Typhoons.

"Nothing that India has got is anything anywhere near this (the
Typhoon). I would say that absolutely. This airplane is phenomenally
different in both performance and technology in anything they (IAF) got
right now," he said.

But, he added, it was not criticism, as Typhoon is the product of next generation technology.

"I would say the IAF crew that I have worked with and seen are every
bit as clever as any other air crew in the world, and in many cases
better. It is all about the man as the machine that they operate," he
added.

Dalton said the cooperation between the RAF and the IAF will
continue, as Britain valued this relationship. "IAF has a lot of
experience and I would like to suck that out and use it, quite frankly,"
he added.
