but to think again, it might turn yellow in the future and it requires extra care to keep it clean,
the current brown/purple model is more resistant to aging / dirt

not to mention there are more custom ROM choices for Desire, at least for now

rooting your phone won't lose any information,
but flashing a custom ROM will,
you need to back up your things like what tyja mentioned,
use mybackup pro for SMS, contacts
titanium backup for apps

in order to use mybackup pro and titanium backup you need to root your phone first.
btw, you haven't got your Desire yet right?

the best way is just try it out yourself, not that hard

personally prefer MIUI over Sense HD (for now),
reason is Sense HD comes with too many unnecessary apps,
and MIUI gives a different experience compared to Sense.

BUT that's just me.
I still suggest that you try out both.
the most hassle part is just restoring data and apps.
you can play with the ROM a bit first before restoring.

err, you mean the Sense launcher?
if yes then that means you didn't flash the rom.
by right you should see MIUI launcher/home screen.
unless you mean the HTC splash screen?

the steps are simple (that is if you already know how to flash a ROM).
first you need to root your phone if you haven't,
then create an ext3 partition (assuming that ext partition is not yet created),
flash the ROM like you're flashing any other ROM,
done.
