Saw this topic on T-Nation forums and realised we dont have one here. i'll edit this post and compile your contributions into a list so everyone can learn not to be a d*** at the gym without realising it.

mine are:
1. occupying more than one bench/station at any given time, but if you're willing to share and wait for your turn, then its fine.

2. throwing down <70lbs db's with force at an obvious attempt to get attention on how awesome you are

3. talking shop while sitting on benches and taking up space in the free weight area. its already crowded as it is.

4. resting between sets for more than 5 mins sitting down at the HS machines, staring into space/on the phone/watching everyone else and when asked how many more sets, says x amount and immediately starts the set. were you actually waiting for me to start you off?

5. resting the short barbells on the benches instead of the floor. do the bars really need cushioning, and are you that lazy to lift it bar off the floor instead?

i'll think of more later.

The guys above have some of my "faves" but I think I can add a few:

1. Guys who don't put back the weights.
This irks me to no end. I get that you're tired and all but so am I yet I still put back the weights. Therefore, why can't you put back the weights? This happens a lot with the leg press machines.

this. although i must say in my gym its the norm for everyone to leave the db's around. i still put my db's back though, as futile as it seems. its not unusual for me when occupying a bench to rack up the db's littered in front of the bench before starting my sets. wouldnt want to get up the bench and trip on them and injuring myself

hey hey hey! i wear my bball gear to gym too! but at least i fill up my jersey tongue.gif. i agree with dan, if i wear anything other than sleeveless shirts and moisture absorbing material even my towel would be too wet to wipe away the sweat. once i wore a cotton shirt during leg day and the gym ran out of small towels i ended my routine TOTALLY drenched in sweat. i might as well have not worn a shirt that day =.="

There's this uncle at my gym who is bigger than me, saying that you don't need squats and deadlifts ! 'all you gotta do is bench press like me, do 10 sets for decline, 10 sets for incline', and drink mass gainers !

GVT training. 10x10 with a minute rest in between. im about to start on the program so i'll tell you how it goes in a few weeks tongue.gif. i'll still do my squats and RDL's though..

shane, any tips on telling people how to spot correctly? most of the time when i ask random people to spot me, they do half the work. i tell them less support, and they reduce their help by a fraction. bleh, totally lost my focus by then. the bigger the weights, the more force they put in!

I know right , especially for shoulder presses and benchpress. Lol, can't be helped. Thats the perks of having training partners. Or just ask the biggest guy in the gym. He "should" know how to spot properly.  hmm.gif

irritates me to no end. i usually take a lighter weight nowadays and do it myself. at least my last set doesnt feel like a warm up set. but usually if someone occupies some bench/machine that you need why not ask if they could share? usually people do give in. i know i would.

This reminds me of something. I have a friend who came to the gym once (literally just once), did some warm ups, stretching, etc. At first I thought he was serious and would start training. Instead, he sat down and took out a PSP from his bag, and stared playing. By the time I finished my workout, he was still there, still playing.  laugh.gif  doh.gif  sweat.gif

i heard hanging around weight plates and db's makes you buffed rclxm9.gif

Err, when it comes to bench, I'll just tell them when I say spot only spot. .or else just stand behind. Its actually a risk doing that but it kinda works. Squats, I ask them to grab my hips (sounds homo but thats how to do it) when I say spot. You should be able to know actually when you are about to get crushed. Hope that helps

i'll give this a try, thanks man.

my gym now has a rubber like platform not unlike the one in FF Empire. Its great, very stable. but now every now and then when i reach for db's i get a static shock zzz. almost everyone in my gym gets that now lol. really makes your workout interesting.

if its unavoidable we would know it. some of the guys purposely throw em down with force. ive seen it done with 10kg db's. really?

i think its quite normal where people simply put dumbbells at empty slots on the rack
it'll be a headache if you gotta arrange everything according to its original place unless its the policy
*
i have to agree, after my set i usually cant be farked to look for the tiny numbers indicating the weight of the db's at the rack. janji the db's are in the rack and off the floor so it wont trip anyone / make a mess

golden hair trainer? never seem to encounter, safe for me tongue.gif

what i dislike about some is they purposely leave something on those equipment, so that they can book them while doing other machines, 2-3 machines placing his stuff... for eg the squat rack, he put his bottle there, the bench he left his towel there... and the pull down machines , his gloves... geez i guess he never learn the word "share".
*
my rule of thumb; even if you have your gear there, if you arent there within 5 minutes im taking it. if you're stopping me from taking it while claiming you're doing a super set i'm gonna ask if its too much to share the damn equipment?

Wasn't in a good mood last week (Monday, what else), and was planning to wrap up International Chest Day with 3-4 sets of cable flys. Am pretty exhausted so I head to the cable machine and watch this guy work his way through 2 sets while I rest for 5-7 minutes.

Am ready to start, so..

Me: Hey man, how many sets do you have left?
Him: Er, gimme 10 minutes lah.
Me : Ookaaay. How many SETS do you have left?
Him : Just gimme 10 minutes can anot?
Me: 10 minutes ah. So long. Can we just take turns then instead?
Him : *looks at me like I said something offensive to his mum* Erh no. *ignores me and goes back to his set*
Me : *turns into an ******** WHAT?! You don't SHARE AND TAKE TURNS?! *super surprised tone*
Him : NO.
Me : f***ing *******. *walks off*
Him : ^&$!@*&#$*!@#(!@^#(!^#*(!@#( RUDE!

Was I wrong sad.gif Would have turned around and probably punched his face in, but he's about 45 and greying hair. Something told me to just not continue the argument.
*
tbh although he is being an ass, you're in the wrong here. if he doesnt want to share you cant force him to. hes paying for the gym membership so imo he has the rights not to share. theres no written rule in gyms where it says you HAVE to share equipments, at most is the cardio machines where they limit you to a certain amount of time.

if everyone lives by written rules, we don't need any moral values anymore. Just teach our kids, memorise every rule u can and don't expect to b sued.

i didnt say you need to live ONLY by written rules. you having a bad day or what?

Today at my gym. 3 buddies standing in front of what looks like at least 7 to 8 sets of dbs, all of which ranges from 2.5kg to 10kgs. Looked like it was a pasar malam db sale. Think they were doing curls.

At least they reracked the dbs when they were done. I had to resort to using 5kg plates for a burn lateral raise set instead of the 7.5kg dbs cos they hogged both sets of the same weight
