AirAsia Says Plane Came Off Runway in Malaysia, Passengers Safe

QUOTE
Southeast Asia’s biggest budget carrier, said one of its planes came off the runway while landing in the rain late yesterday in Kuching, eastern Malaysia.

All passengers on flight AK5218 are “safe”, the company confirmed in a statement by SMS today.

“The wheels of the aircraft are stuck in the grass due to soft soil caused by the rain,” AirAsia said. “The captain did a good job in handling the situation. Engineering is recovering the aircraft so the airport can be reopened.”

runway there is kinda short, if raining, plane need more distance to slow down. if its heavy loaded, more distance. i belip the plane is heavy as usual. heavy + rain = crash lor. but good job to them pilot for no casualties.

For sure local press has been targetted by Tony after the incident.

Anyway, almost similar incident happened in kota Kinabalu way back in 2004:

Looking at one link in the first page, AA canceled (i think all) their flights to Kuching today. Probably due to the rain and also afraid that the same thing would happen.

The length of the runway already extend in 2009 (if not mistaken) to accommodate A380 hmm.gif

AA really can hide the crash

They should come clean on the issue. With Facebook and internet , it's not easy to hide these things. It should be damage-control mode, like having press conference to assure passengers, to call for internal investigation , etc. Not by hiding it mah

normally if got such situation the airport will call us at hospital for "standby for crash emergency", by MAS, their precaution procedure is good...

but yesterday no one call from air asia side, we only know about it from family members...

anyhow - that plan carried me back to and from Kuching several times. ngerinya!!! luckily no serious injuries. Pilot tidur ke!! Ini malaysia. We get heavy rain all the times!!! Are we suppose to worry everytime the rain is heavy?

Hopefully this will teach Uncle Tony and AA a lesson in humility. and bertaubatlah dengan tipu helah jual insurans, additional luggage kilos etc. We know you deliberately set the click - ok, cancel, in a way that users will accidentally buy the products when the select not to purchase. Luckily the plane crash landed safely and all passenger that were injured were safe after this...good skills of pilot to guide plane down with minimal human injury.
Though incident happened last nite, no news or sms from AA informing us on incident and closure of airport.
so found out the hard way...when arrive at airport...
why do the press need to cover this up when it will be inconvenient to passengers and moreover it's for their safety if decision was made to ground the planes or close the airport.fully support that decision
safety of passengers is ultimate priority!!!

cos the incident involve AA
not MAS
sure slow
u want to blame MAS personnel for slow the evacuation
sure they will say it is not under our paycheck
most of the airport workers are MAS personnel
yes can blame MAB personnel
btw AA personnel very little
to reduce overhead cost
even at Kuching airport, AA dont have any lost and found counter
only MAS provided this kind of counter
plus any delay in baggage sure the AA customer got to MAS counter believe it or not (someone told me)

i blame stupid malaysian passengers, clearly stated weight limit for hand carry, but all try to cheat and bring 3x allowed, so plane overloaded but pilots do not know hence cannot compensate for it.

Kuching airport closed temporarily

KUCHING: The Kuching International Airport has been closed Tuesday until further notice, a Malaysia Airports Bhd statement said.

This is becaused of an incident Monday night, when an AirAsia aircraft (flight AK5218 from Kuala Lumpur), skidded and veered off the airport's runway 25, when landing at 10.02 during heavy rain.

All passengers were evacuated safely from the aircraft.

Efforts to remove the aircraft Tuesday were hampered by continuous heavy rains.

An AirAsia flight to Kuching skidded off the runway Monday night and landed on the grass verge, leaving four passengers with minor injuries.
Only one flight was released for departure from the airport, flight MH2505 to Kuala Lumpur.

All AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines flights from the airport have been effected.

Passengers are advised to contact their airline's offices to enquire about their flight status.

I suspect the plane is doing a dangerous cross-wing landing, with wind sheer gusting at high speed this is very dangerous to land the plane.

Furthermore the flight is a delayed flight, maybe the pilot "nge-nge" wanted to touch down. doh.gif

Just my humble opinion....

ground crew have details of total luggage and the plane itself can calculate the weight of its own by tons. but no one knows whether its overloaded or not. to say pilot ignoring the fact its overloaded or not we shall wonder and ask ORLY!?
*
ye la, this is malaysia, not indonesia. we are stricter with luggage weight.
they will weight alomost everything. of course they already calculate everything. i dont think this should be the point.
max fro hand carriage is 7kg, no?
since to have check in luggage u need to pay for it, i dont think many people will choose for that option.

Wonder about the cost of repair/rehaul to follow. blink.gif

The front landing gear must have broke off during the impact.

Pilot must have deployed the trust reversals at the wrong timing... Poor traction of the slippery runway surface could also have been the contributing factor...

Or did the plane touched down too hard, bounced off the runway slightly into mid-air again, got influenced by the strong cross winds as such, and then lost control...?

Here is the full article. The passengers should really have been better taken care of.

ADUN had narrow escape when plane skidded

KUCHING – An Air Asia aircraft that carry 124 passengers that include an ADUN and his wife, skidded from the runway of Kuching International Airport at 10.15 pm last night.

The passengers were panic when they saw smoke billowing from the aircraft engine.

Passengers were screaming and crying in the plane as they waited for the emergency doors to be opened which the air-hostess appeared to be slow in doing it.

Passengers all rushed to the exit doors and flee from the plane.

Four panic passengers, one of them a male were rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital at midnight due to the incident.

All the passengers were drenched to the skin while waiting for help in the runway.

The plane AK2518 made a bad start when it was delayed for one hour at the KLIA. It departed to Kuching at 8.30 pm.

An angry passenger, Ling said the plane from KL was supposed to land at 10 pm at Kuching International Airport but they landed in the grass verge amid pouring rain at the time.

He said the pilot announced that there was drizzling in Kuching 10 minutes before landing and when they were about to land, they saw it was pouring heavily.

A passenger who did not wanted to be identified said their ordeal were not over yet as they got out of the plane as they were forced to wait over an hour at the grass verge in heavy downpour with women and children.

He said he was upset as help seemed to be slow and a bus later arrived. The bus was able to ferry 20 passengers each time with women and children getting on first.

He said a few passengers were too scared to even walk. Some of the passengers who got impatient with waiting walked towards the arrival hall.

Despite seeing vehicles driving towards the plane and trying to wave them down, none bothered to stop.

Snowdon Lawan, Balai Ringin and his wife who were among the passengers lamented at the poor services given at the airport.

A passenger said when they reached the arrival hall at the airport drenched to the skin, there was no towel or hot drinks for them. Most of the passengers, he said were shivering and shaking with cold and fear.

Due to the mishap at the runway, an AirAsia plane from Kota Kinabalu, AK6037 meant to land at 10.25 pm transit to Singapore.

Another from JB AK5840 meant to arrive at 22.05 pm flew to KL. A flight AK6038 leaving to KK at 10.55 pm was cancelled.

Two of MAS flights were also diverted. One was MH2530 arriving from KL at 10.45 pm while MH 2534 from KL expected to arrive at 11.59 were diverted.

A tweet from AirAsia claimed that KIA has been temporarily closed down due to the unfortunate accident.

last time transmile plane skid on the runway @ Kch Airport
totally expensive to repair

Bodoh. my office the the most closest building to the "crash site". lucky at that time i did not work.

- KIA is one of the place where crosswinds normally occurs. ask any pilot.
- the rainfall for that particular day is 283.6mm. highest so far ever in my career. its been raining heavily for more than 24 hours
- the runway is long enough for that Airbus to land. in fact more than enuff

accident happens! looking the location of the "crash site". it veered away just a 100m from the touchdown area. if not for the pilot, all the passanger would be dead by now cause the plane should have flipped!

LOL! you're such an idiot. every airplane has a maximum takeoff weight and landing weight. the pilots will calculate all these even before the flight takes off. they HAVE to make sure that the limits made known by the manufacturer is met because all these are kept in BLACK and WHITE in a paper called a LOADSHEET (in some airlines, they have a LOADMASTER to take care of this but not in AirAsia!). so how on earth could you have jumped into that conclusion? or you just want to carry a big banner high above your head and say I'M STEWPID,SHOOT ME? doh.gif

WAH, It was amazing that the plane could come to a complete stop in about 100m. Personally I think it is impossible. wink.gif

Imagine to stop A320 from landing speed of about 125knot (that is about 235km/h) to a complete stop in 100m. Impossible rite!!!

In this case I think the plane must have touched down at a place way ahead of the desinated touch down marker.

A typical A320 landing distance is about 1500m. I don't think it can be done at 100m unless it dip into the soft soil right after touch down and slowed down rapidly by it. For a plane having such a huge inertia to be slowed down to halt in 100m is insane. It's like hitting a brick wall.

immediately after landing, refueled and clean
start the engine and fly again
