hi all, wanted to know where do you usually buy music books? Teachers especially maybe? As I know most students might buy books from the music school or from the teacher but the music schools I knows carries quite limited choice.

Any shops recommendations?

Thanks! biggrin.gif

Hi guys, may I know what would be the rough cost to replace a violin and bow's strings? It's a 3/4 violin. I'm a pianist and haven't had the opportunity to learn the violin before this and am now purchasing a used one (Stringers of Edinburgh)

any advice will be much appreciated!

I think a good enough violin string for student is Daddario Prelude, which is about RM60. Rehair bow is about RM120.

Hi, I always wanted to play a violin when I was small. Plan to get 1 soon and self learn maybe. What price range I should go for? I am left-handed, is there specific 1 for left-handed person? Or I can just get a different side of chin rest?

well, i wont recommend that.

Even if you kuat self learn, after using 4 years, u realize you use the wrong technique and habits, you have to relearn everything again.

NVD!!! I got me a Synwin violin just now. It has a very warm, rich tone. Also upgraded the bow to an octagonal one.

cool collection dude!

anyways, have anyone been to this store:-

http://www.mystringmaster.com/about-us.html

says they got repair and even rental. I definitely would give it a visit later (cello strings 3 years ady, bridge a bit too high my thumb hurts, bow definitely need rehair or replacement altogether etc.etc), but just asking if anyone have had any experience about it. They don't publish any price for their products/services so yeah, have to go 1st then only know..

Sadly... 99 % out all violinists cannot improvise' on the spot'. Yup...that's NINETY NINE percent. They have to rely on score...or else they will stand there and they cannot play!

Very sad state of Violinists.

Hello to all string players,

I have been learning violin for the past 4 years and i have completed grade 3 abrsm exam, and i admit that i am still a beginner. All these while i have been playing alone and solo myself.

Since the exam i find that my drive has been getting lower and more slack off. Im the eldest student at the age of 28 at my learning center while the rest are kids, not that i look down on them, its just that I am advised by my teacher that I could try to find some friends to play along to motivate each other while improving.

I agree with her that I could try that, sadly in my circle of friends I do not have any active musicians. As of my skills, I know I am not qualified yet to join any junior ensembles or performance teams.

I would like to know whether are there any volunteer or practise groups that are active around Klang valley or church musical groups? I have not look around much myself, but I would gladly request to join any.
Or it could be any players who would just like to gather around to practise at some place, I do not mind to travel.

Seems like I have hit some barrier now, and I experienced that 2 years back as well.
Very much appreciated if veterans here could shed some light on my dilemma now.

And thank you in advance for any invitation and advices.

well i have a problem close to what you just described except that I play a bit with a cpl of ofcmates who play violin and piano. But seeing that everyone's bz we hardly had any sessions this year(!). So i also dont mind if got any practice group that could improve my drive.
Oh I am learning cello though.. 3.5 years now but no exams tongue.gif (learnt several movmts from bach cello suites 1-3, but definitely still a beginner). Cheers!

Just want share my experience of learning violin. there's lots of unqualified teachers out there. Learning any music instrument the basic/foundation is the most important. Sadly,my violin teacher is one of those unqualified teachers. She dint teach me the foundation properly ( how to how the bow correctly, finger position, etc..) For few years I learn under her, when she teach me a new technique, she won't show properly and I need go home and watch you tube. So I would advise if anyone would like to take up violin lessons, find a good teacher. Teacher does plays a role.

Your teacher is a useless idiot. As simple as that.
I agree with you. There are so many bad Violinists who cant even play properly or in tune...yet they are so in demand in music schools.

Why? ....cos music schools are desperate! Very few Good Violinists wanna teach in music school where they have to surrender 40% of the salary back to the school.

So these schools dont care if the Violin teachers are good or not...as long as they can 'lie all the way' especially to Beginners.
