Please advice,

Someone with 10 yrs piano background.

1. What are the chances that someone can play by ear for violin?
2. Learn and master this instrument without going for music school/getting a tutor?
3. What would be your suggestion for him. Buy a reference book/ watch youtube.

1. It depends on natural talent but I guarantee that you will pick up faster than average people without piano background.
2. Comprehensive guides can be your teacher, but I suggest finding a personal tutor so that you will be taught in depth and the tutor can suit you according to your level and teach you accordingly.
3. Youtube are better (just my opinion) compared to books because you actually see what is that guy doing.

Hi I haven't posted in LY for many years. I would be considered an "unker" to most of you here.

Violinist here, classically trained, been playing for about 30+ years, and can manage a good Bach Concerto though Vivaldis always trips me up.

I own a 1737 Kloz antique, likely an imitation, but the sound is passable.

This is my sixth violin but I've sold off/given away the rest and this is the only one remaining.

Now teaching my son violin for about a year plus and I think he's going to be better than me very soon.

I'm looking for a violin teacher for my son for his advanced grades.

Does anyone know a good violin teacher who regularly also arranges concerts and competitions?

Do pm me. Tks.

Is it possible to learn the violin by self taught?
It seems hard as I'm not sure if I'm holding the violin properly, etc etc

Better go get a good teacher. Unlearning bad habits on an instrument is a lot more difficult than learning the correct & easy way from the beginning.

Ouch, if your sound post fell over, you'd better get the strings loosened or the violin top may cave in. But your pegs are stuck. Ask your violin teacher, if you have one.
