Good thing about this long punt to the other side of the field is, it diverts the opponents attention completely to the other side...and when a fast cross goes in again, they lost track of who they are marking. The concept is similar to the game of handball, if u watch the attacking players pass and pass from left to right and back to left and back to right, gathering speed in process.
Sad to say none of the current midfielders have the ability (or at least, lack of confidence) to pump the ball wide to left/right with precision like Scholes did. I think the cause is nowadays most teams, even the smaller teams like Blackpool dare to attack us directly, even at Old Trafford. So the times when we control midfield, aka passing around aka Control (FM11 mode

) are reduced significantly. This leads to lack of confidence, because players like Fletcher and Carrick cant risk these limited chance by taking a risk of such long ball...so usually u see them play short ball back to their sides or back to defenders when under pressure. Dayum...Scholes set such a high standard for the club's midfielders

BTW do you think Carrick may be a bit too quiet while on the field? quiet as in when calling for balls. Sometimes a player cant see everything so they need an open teammates to shout out if they are in open spaces and can receive the ball. If Carrick is too quiet and dont call out that often when he is open, then by the time he does he would have been closed down and opportunity gone wasted. Or maybe i am saying this coz of his personality, memang the diam tikus type. Scholes is different, his "quiteness" is just a "i dont give a damn to everything else off pitch"
