Hi guys,

Me and my gf wanted to get a bike for normal riding and some outings.
Need some recommendations.

Went to a bike shop in Putri Puchong and saw a Raleigh MTB, and the sales person recommended the Jamis X3 (which is around RM1500)

Some info here:
We have not tried any extreme mountain biking before, so I don't think we will do those extreme jump or cross jungle ride.
We normally just ride around out house area and would want to start doing more biking in parks for sight seeing.

Please advise on some shops nearby Puchong area, price and models tongue.gif

Thanks in advance!

i still have my 2001 jamis durango sport and she rides fine! they are company that puts the money in the frame so you can spend the rest on upgrades. while the durango has been superceeded by an Anthem for trail duties it still does sterling work, commuting and rolling down to the shops for milk. so yes, go for it!

Rd hangers are unique to each frame. when purchasing a short cage RD, there are limitations to the chain ring capacity.the biggest chain ring is removed and replaced with a bash guard for this reason as it is not used at all.

maybe we could share the shipping cost and purchase hangers from Derailleur Hanger

@newgen - tora is different from gila. Gila i believe is not available as an aftermarket fork. forks for bikes at RM1500 are pretty much the same.

better off getting a new XT RD with medium cage.can still take 11-34T.Dont think it can take the 44T upfront as per the specs.you need to check.get a shadow version which minimizes the risk of hitting something. shorter cage and you will need to chop the chain. what's the problem now?

if it skips,try to tune.if all else fails then check RD alignment.if RD alignment ok,then most probably RD koyak no choice but to tukar. XT shadow ~250 XTR shadow ~ 500 non carbon cage

tek tek sound could be from the cage there...not smooth.try to lube and tune.i would suspect alignment to be out either on the tuning or the physical position of the hanger.had similar problem. skipping then tune liau got tek tek ....then check RD alignment....then seem ok but not smooth and ghost shifts....then ended change RD. problem solved....spend money AGAIN !!!!!

Just to confirm, the designation
SGS = Long cage
GS = Mid cage
SS = Short cage

Rite?

Also is the price the same for all, as long as it's the same model range rite?

Has anobody here used a road RD before on their MTB?

Hey, Thanks for the input.
Will go and check out another shop for price before getting it smile.gif

So what are the expected things when buying a bike? What kind of things you guys will ask for when you buy a bike? Like the bike stand or locks??

Cheers

Newgen, I think it's best for you to consider the type of riding you're planning to do before embarking on your journey of bike shopping. You might not be interested in trail riding at the moment, but you might be at the near future.

For leisure taman riding, any price range bike is good enough. Using slicks or semi slicks will get better mileage for the same effort.

If you have a friend who's into MTB riding and has a spare bike, suggest you to take it for a test ride on some mellow trails to get a feel of it. MTB riding is a very loose term. You can have mellow riding (makan angin sight seeing type) to hardcore gravity defying riding (the one when you see, your jaw dropped in awe).

May I suggest FRIM's Rover Trail if you manage to get a loaner bike to ride it and try PCP and get their rentals. Note that when you do go PCP, make sure you're going at the BLUE/GREEN trails if your GF is tagging along. It gets pretty interesting when it comes to RED. For BLACK's, do top up on your insurance premium though.

Do take ur time to choose the right type of bike for your usage. Getting it wrong can be an expensive journey in the long run. Also do consider getting into the sport by going 2ndhand. You ended up saving the depreciation in value of a new bike. But then, you might also buying other people's problem. Again, having a friend who knows his/her stuffs would come in handy.

As for Jamis as a brand... It's pretty good bang for the buck IMHO.

Ratios are too heavy for a heavy bike (in this case; a DH bike) if you're using road RD and cassette. But it'll help you speed downhill...
I think there won't be much climbing unless you really have powerful legs.
Btw, I've seen people using road RD and cassette on XC bike (mesti kuat nih) sweat.gif

p/s: FRIM entrance fee for a person RM5, for a car RM7, IINM.
