Ready Player One (2018)

I am going to sound harsh...

Since A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), Steven Spielberg has not made a good family base movie.

Don't get me wrong, he made good movies after that (sans Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)), but not in the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Jurassic Park (1993) kinda way.

Watched this yesterday, and it is mind-boggling how he managed to make this movie!

It is a movie about Easter egg (which is launch during Easter weekend, some marketing genius is getting a big fat bones).

And the movie is filled with NOTHING but Easter eggs and I am NOT complaining.

No need to mention the obvious (Iron Giant), I see Marvin the Martian, Freddie Kruger, Ninja Turtles, doing Gandalf, without using the name Gandalf and The DeLorean with a Kitt, kit.... laugh.gif

Lots more that you blink and you miss....

Movie take place in a dystopia where life is so bad that everyone escapes into a virtual world and greedy corporation cashes in on this. And the rest is eye candy.

I usually complain about the lack of script, and have to say, as thin as the storyline is, the master storyteller, tells it well.

And The Shining Scene!!! OMG!!!!

BFG was a big let down. Steven had said that he sees a future with not big budget movies and everyone if their own film maker. Is this is last hurray before that happens? I hope not...

I really needed this movie and enjoyed it immensely.

Chances are, you would too

A Quiet Place (2018)

I notice this movie, whilst compiling my annual horror movie viewing list.

The premise, sounds promising, and have to be honest, expectation was NOT high.

I am please to eat my low expectation, and proclaim here, THIS IS A GREAT HORROR MOVIE!

Director/Main Male Lead John Krasinski and Main Female Lead Emily Blunt are actually husband and wife.

I know, I know, they are asking for trouble to appear in the same movie together.

Think Cleopatra (1963)...

Think Eyes Wide Shut (1999) (Ironically, forever associated with Stanley Kubrick's last work...)

Both highly publicize lemon it's day

Can John and Emily avoid this... stigma?

Yes, yes they can!!

John, and I am hypothesizing here, learnt from past masters of suspense (Alfred?) and really, really put the pressure on his audience, keeping them at the edge of their seats. No gimmick, no fancy CGI (well, some, but not overwhelming so), and gave us an honest, thrilling, suspenseful, horror movie.

At some point in the movie, I actually ask myself, why am I taking all this sensory abuse from the movie. Am I some kind of masochist?

I surprise myself with the answer, yes, yes I am!!! laugh.gif

This is a fantastic horror movie.

Good script, good delivery (acting, directing the works)

Surprise that Paramount has made this, and I cannot remember a good horror by paramount, until I google it (Sleepy Hollow is more dark comedy to me, Paranormal Activity, I will give them that etc etc...)

This one is one to remember.

I humbly submit to you, a bloody good horror movie.

Enjoy

Rampage (2018)

Okay... Game adaptation.

I will put the budget of this movie in the USD 200 million price range (cannot find any publication of this)

So they took a page from Michael Bay's Transformer playbook, big budget, Dwayne Johnson and a popular game, and the result is... a run of the mill actioneer?

A little bit of King Kong/Transformer/The US military and some genetic mumbo jumbo, a good movie does not make.

And the worst of it, the big bad.... two wealthy 20/30 somethings entitled spoilt wall street siblings....

I think the Korean airline heiress sounds more annoying...

Warner Brothers, what is happening to you. Why are you not making good movies anymore...

You got the resource, please, just find GOOD SCRIPTS for Pete's sake....

I'm not quite sure what else I can say...

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Well....

Marvel pulled no punches!!

The movie starts with guns ablazing (metaphorically speaking) and really does not let up until the very end.

Because of the comic, I kinda guess the ending and also how the second movie ends, but as I had stated Marvel does not shy from... doing what needs doing!!!

People here would probably know how much I.... dislike Thor Ragnarok.

This movie really redeems that character for me in the Marcel Universal (Though truth to be told I still miss Mjornir).

This is a heavy HEAVY movie, and there maybe a stumbling block for Marvel.

I am really not sure how Spider-man Homecoming 2 is going to happen!!? (Does it take place before of after this movie??)

With it, not pulling it's punches, does that mean Fan of the movie... would be turned off?

Only the final block office will tell.

I like this movie

It is NOT perfect, and have to add, it is still pretty well made

Lets see what the box office says soon

Oh, I pet peeve, until date, WE STILL HAVE NOT HEARD AVENGERS ASSEMBLE.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

This movie is all about... pedigree.

The Rogue (Han Solo).

The Ship (Millennium Falcon).

The Sidekick (Chewbacca).

The First Love (Qi'ra)

It has it ALL.

I keep mixing up Thandie Newton with Zoe Saldana. Hmmm....

For the people NOT in the know (where have you been?), this is Han Solo origin movie.

And it really has it all, where is he from, who his first love is, how he became rogue everyone love (

)

Ron Howard has always been very good to bring out the human interest to whatever projects he is involved in, and this is no different which actually adds to this movie.

Is Alden Ehrenreich young Solo?

I cannot say I am a fan of his. I can only remember him, from the movie, Beautiful Creatures (2013) which was not a big thing... After watching this, he... sold young Solo (great backstory to the name).

Jonathan Kasdan & Lawrence Kasdan wrote the script, which brings me back to my pedigree comment earlier.

The only thing that did not work for me is Donald Glover, as young Lando Calrissian...

Oh, Woody Harrelson is also in this.

Was actually surprise that
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
is in it!!?!

Will thing be another big money earner for Disney?

Has there been any doubt? (Not sure if it will make more than Rogue One)

If this is the level of quality Disney can maintain for Star War stand alone movie, bring them on.

P.S. please forgive any more than usual typo, it is 3:24am, and I don't have any mental faculties left...

Deadpool 2 (2018)

Watched this last week, and and it is hilarious....

I not sure David Leitch is as cutting edge as Tim Miller (director).

Still the movie was enjoyable

I was surprise that

After watching Atomic Blonde think it's fair to say Chad Stahelski is the better director than David Leitch. Leitch just another director for hire that just does passable effort but not trailblazing type of film directing. Not that he is lacking effort just not enough substance or the Chinese saying "not enough minerals".

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

Watched this at IMAX 1Utama, and am glad to report, the Audion/Visual system there is still great!

I really want to like this.

The budget is there, the visual is there the sound is there.

First Act and Second Act are entertaining (not without flaws though)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

They got rid of the two kids in the first movie, and the story starts with going back to the island to rescue... wait, did they not do THAT in Jurassic Park 2 already...

Oh, no no wait it is not like Jurassic Park 2. TO begin with this is Jurassic World 2.... really THAT'S the best comeback they have?

The script could have been much better.

I kinda remember the scripts of movies I had watch before, so, for me the movie had a shaky script to begin with

And most of the get out of difficult situation sequences.... had been done before...

Although the third act was really flawed (That is how they choose to end the movie?? Really??) the point they made is actually the gist that Michael Crichton tried to get acrossed in his first novel, should we go down the slippery slope of genetic study?

It is an entertaining movie.

Just seems a little repetitive in some places.

But what do I know, I enjoyed Solo and it is tanking at the box office!! tongue.gif

Hereditary (2018)

This is a disturbing DISTURBING movie and definitely NOT for everyone.

If you like movie like, Lights Out (2016) and Don't Breath (2016), this movie is NOT for you.

This movie.... simmers... Pressure builds. You as a viewer is oppressed from the middle of the movie onwards.

It is mainly progressed through narrative (eg dialogue-gy).

Toni Collette is brilliant.

Alex Wolff is suddenly all over the place and is also good here.

The themes in this movie are very alarming

And when the end happened, I was STUNNED into stupor.... I was not sure, how I was suppose to react to the ending....

As my first statement had announce, very disturbing movie.

Watched at own risk.

Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

There are complains about super-hero movies.

The critics claims that they are all... the same....

For me, as far as I am concern, the marvel universe movie each has it's own... idiosyncrasy.

What do I mean?

Tony Stark (Iron Man) is I am so rich and brilliant, that it's sexy.

Steve Rogers [Captain America] and his never say die attitude.

Thor learning humility and earning his Hammer (Mjornir... oh wait)... Axe (Stormbreaker).

Stephen Strange [Doctor Strange] learning there is a world outside of Science

Black Panther and his Princely Nobility...

And Ant Man and his.....

Nothing.... I have got nothing.

And I love this movie!!! laugh.gif

This movie moves to it's own rhythm.

And Paul Rudd (I've known him since he played Josh in Clueless (1995))/Ant Man delivers.

What his deliver is je ne sais quoi?

It is fun to see.

Another impressive thing is they had to make Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer young in the movie and it looks photo real

Kudos!

Almost all the elements in this movie works for me.

And there are two mini movies at the end credit.

So, enjoy

Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

It has been suggested to me that I can be over- enthusiastic or overly-kind with my reviews or movies.

Believe it or not, I have been "dialing" down my enthusiasm, in my the reviews I write.

Having said that, I categorically label this my No. 1 movie of 2018.

I seriously cannot think of what possible movie, that is going to be release in the near future, that can knock this movie off this pedestal.

This is the sixth outing for this franchise, that seem to go from strength to strength (one can argue that the second outing is the worst out of all six).

There were attempts for younger and hungrier actors to take over the mantel (main male lead, Jeremy Renner) of this movie.

At 56, Tom Cruise seems.... unstoppable.

This movie is shot mainly practical. And I have to add, seeing what was presented on screen, the task is Herculean, figuratively and literally.

I cannot even begin to imagine how it was done, and the Cinematography Rob Hardy is as much an adrenaline junkie as Tom Cruise himself.

This fast paced movie starts strong, and never NEVER lets up.

The action sequence, oh my goodness, the next James Bond has it's work cut for it, if it wants to up the ante... And seriously, I cannot see how they can manage that...

People who reads my mad ravings here, may know that I am really NOT a fan of Henry Cavill, and have to add, I ABSOLUTELY love him here.

I have watched it, and have to add, it has been quite some time (1980). Also bare in mind, I am not.... partial to war movied, so my review may be.... bias.

Will post her or in my Pre 2000s movie thread after I have had a chance to watch it again

Anymore here watched King Arthur: The Legend of The Sword (2017) directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Holmes) starred Charlie Hunham (Pacific Rim), Jude Law?

How does it fare with classic Arthurian film, Excalibur (1981)?

My original reviews of King Arthur can be found here:

Mov_Freak King Arthur's Review

It is not your "normal" take of King Arthur's legend... Which would be the reason why the critics was not kind to it.

Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings (2018)

I have a bone to pick with the local distributors for Chinese/Hong Kong movies....

WIDEN the release on local cinemas for Pete's sake!!!

This is a Tsui Hark movie for crying out loud!!!

This movie is decent.

Okay it is C.G.I. laden, and have to add, not as bad as The Thousand Faces of Dunjia (2017).

The cast, Carina Lau, Mark Chao, Ma Sichun, Feng Shaofeng & Kenny Lin all did their roles well.

My complain is, not chopping the story is at the end of the movie....

Again, just wish it is much easier to watch this movie at the cinema...

The Meg (2018)

I give myself one "mindless" indulgent" every year.

This years indulgent is this movie.

Last years was, Power Rangers (2017) (which I like) and the year before that was Max Steel (2016) (not so much).

This movie stars Jason Statham (whom Paul Bettany claims needs an actor double for his acting bits) , Li Bingbing (in her second Hollywood clunker this year... (remember Guardians of the Tomb (2018)) and Rainn Wilson (from a TV series I like alot Backstrom (2015)).

I actually had high hope for this movie and is sad to report, this is a major clunker.

This was supposed to be directed by Eli Roth, but the director fell out with the studio.

The production value is there but the script is.... bad

Oh and the star being "objectified" is NOT Li BingBing.... blink.gif

Such a shame.

My recommendation is, rewatch Deep Blue Sea (1999) if you must.

You have been warned kiddies, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
