The Nun (2018)

I broke a cardinal rule today...

I went into the cinema late, and missed a few minutes of the movie...

Sigh...

Let get this show in the road...

They got the mood right.

Hammer Horror would have KILLED for the production budget of this movie.

It is a "gorgeous" looking horror movie.

Good job on the cast too.

Each, playing his/her/it's role well.

Story is a little... jumbled...

The "surprises" are no surprise at all...

The views are a few step ahead of the movie so...

Having said that,, I did not see the way the ended the movie coming, so kudos for that?

In short, a creepy movie, not necessary a horror movie...

Ya know what I mean?

The Predator (2018)

Battle in Space, chance encounter and Men In Black.... and that is in the first 10 minutes of the movie!!

This latest reboot.... brings back some of the magic of the original Predator movies.

Alot of the previous Predator iterations, did not really work, because it does not expend our knowledge of The Predators.

This movie touches on that. Expanding our understanding of the Predator somewhat.

The first act, stellar.

The second act, fumbled somewhere in the middle

The third act, recovered somewhat and have to add, still overshadowed by the stellar first act.

The last beat of the movie... was a little off, still overall, I did enjoy the movie.

My Two Sen

P.S.

One of the BLOODIEST Predator movies ever...

Alpha (2018)

This is a GORGEOUS movie.

Very reminiscent of Baraka (1992) and Samsara (2011).

What to know how man's best friend, became Man's best friend.

This movie hypothesize, what could have happened.

Also stealing a page from Avatar, the neolithic language was created by a college profession studying the neolithic site, and this is her best educated guess on what it could be.

I love this much much more than I love 10,000 BC (2008).

It seems more plausible.

The lead, Kodi Smit-McPhee plays Keda and he looks like Lukas Han.... tongue.gif

Okay, honestly, some scenes you have to suspend your disbelieve, but overall, enjoyable movie.

Show this movie some love people, it deserves it.

Venom (2018)

I am at a disadvantage...

I ready the comic where Venom was introduced to the Marvel universe and this is NOT it...

Okay, Sony had licensed back Spider-man movie license to Marvel/Disney, I get that.

After Andrew Garfield's drop out with the Head Hocho's of Sony, alot of the Venom/Sinister Six movie project got shelf, I get that.

I still have to say, I don't buy the origins as portrayed by this movie.

It is so... clunky.

Tom Hardy is a hard actor to evaluate.

Why?

He is a true chameleon?

I had to be reminded he is also in the DC universe, namely, Bane in The Dark Knight.

So what I am trying to say id that he truly sells his roles,, that you forget he is Tom Hardy

Which to me, makes Eddie Brock / Venom a hard sell.

He is very flawed and therefore, not necessarily like-able...

Malaysia is "mentioned/showed" in this movie and is.... not recognizable...

So, what am I saying, this movie was put together with good intention and with a good cast, and have to add, I did not like the story and because Tom Hardy did a good job tithe Eddie Brock, I did not like the mavie...

Am I making sense?? tongue.gif

My Two Sen

P.S. if you are a detail oriented then are two mini feature at the end credits.

OMG, why the review so short? Can elaborate ? 😁

Long long review for whaaaaaaaaaaat?!

Got people read one meh??!!?? laugh.gif

Okay lah okay lah!! tongue.gif

Most of you will know, John Carpenter directed Halloween (1978) and Halloween II (1981) which were well received.

Well, it spurred on the "slasher" films (Friday the 13th Anyone?)

And then Rob Zombie (Yes, THAT Rob Zombie) rebooted the franchise Halloween (2007) & Halloween II (2009) and for the life of me, I am vague on whether I actually watched those....

I was not motivated to watch this latest iteration, frankly, because

1). I am slasher film fatigue

2). I was disappointed that Sony did not treat us to THE short 3D remastered version of Michael Jackson's Thriller in front of this (Sony, WHAT THE HEY!!! When are we going to get to SEE that!!!)

Okay, so what happened. The critics.... like this movie. And then VERY cynically friends who are cynical to movies, watched and praised this movie!!

Paint me intrigued.

I went.

I saw.

I like!!!

From the first frame to the last.

Do note that this only acknowledges the original John Carpenter's movies and nothing else, so don't get confused.

Michael is TRULY deranged.

And it is.... infectious??

I will stop there.

Plunk down your money and go see this.

You know you want to.

Supposedly, James Cameron is working on the transfer of that movie to HD/4K and have to add, to date, not release dae yet.

Maybe waiting for a "strategic" date like an announcement of True Lies 2...

James Cameron likes to supervise his bluray releases/restoration/remastering personally, so it might take a while before True Lies gonna be releasing on bluray since he is caught up making multiple Avatar sequels at the moment.

And ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL which got pushed from Nov, 2018 to Feb, 2019......

Based on your review on Halloween, I watched and really like it. Jamie Lee Curtis is pretty badass here. I was on the edge on my seat from beginning to the end. One question though, how did Michael found out where Laurie live?

See!

I told everyone "masterful", which should indicate it is THAT good. But NOooooooo, must long long review.... tongue.gif

Overlord (2018)

Okay... What do you get, when you cross WWII D-Day with Zombie and J.J. Abrams?

The answer, would probably be this movie.

The Good

1). The paratrooper scene, I have never seen anything so... captivating. Really well done. (Anti Aircraft ordinance and
chaos)
2). P.O.V of the Boyce (played by Jovan Adepo) character.
3). The script.
4). Production quality.

The Bad

1). So little background story for the characters (eg. most characters are so thinly developed)
2). I am never a fan of war movies, if anything, this movie enforces that (the ugliness of war)

The Ugly

1). The brutality. I really feel, some violence here were unnecessary...

Was surprise that this movie is already showing.

It was either this, or Bohemian Rhapsody. This had better timing for me, so...

What that, my two sen.

Hi

I may not end up watching this at the local cinema.

The reason being, I am concern what out local censorship board had done to the movie. This may end up "watched on bluray" for me.

Cheers

Let's get something straight right now.

I am NOT a Bradley Cooper (I categorise him as THAT guy from The Hangover) fan. And I am really NOT a fan of Lady Gaga.

There is just something about this movie... that works.

From the first performance by Jackson Maine (played by Bradley Cooper) to the last performance by Ally (portrayed by Lady Gaga), the movie.... envelopes you.

I don't know if auto tune played a BIG role in the sound track, and to me, the music sounds... real.

I firmly believe that a good movie, is usually a product of a director, directing a movie he/she wants to watch (Steven Spielberg's Jaw, E.T., Jurassic Park, George Lucas's Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Wachowski sisters' The Matrix etc).... Who would have thunk, Bradley Cooper is into Chick Flicks.... tongue.gif

This being Bradley's first foray into movie direction, is mindblowing!!!

There is an earnestness/honesty about it.

Which brings me back to the point the music, which plays such a big part of the movie. It feels.... so (and I cannot emphasize this enough) real. Lady Gaga, strips everything back, revealing what is usually under her suit of armour (all that makeup and costumes), and her music is so much the better for it.

All actors brought it.

And the ending....

How can someone who is so loving (brave) and giving, also be so.... weak... A true oxymoron indeed.

This is one of my top tens for the year.

I humbly submit to you, my review for A Star Is Born (2018)!

My Two Sen.

P.S. I did notice there are at least two major cuts in the movie. And have to add, they did not impede the story in any way.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)

Oh gosh, I did a movie marathon today, and am kinds exhausted, and I still want to complete this review.

SO if my spelling is out, or I don't make sense in general, go gentle on me....

This movie is one of Warner's big gun for the year, and it is...

I am getting ahead of myself.

Watching Part 1 & 2 of this is a little weird.

Why?

With the Harry Potters, I had read the book before I watched the movies, so I knew the story.

Where as with these movies, I really wasn't sure what to expect.

So did I go in with High Expectations?

You bet your bottom dollar.

Jude Law, Johnny Depp and surprisingly, a very sedated Ezra Miller??!?

So Newt's (Eddie Redmayne) adventure, continues.

The main gang from the first movie rerturns.

Some HUGE plot holes from the first movie are being patched here.

Leta Lestrange (Zoë Kravitz) is in this. In some way, this movie "is" about her.

Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) is explained. Also surprising the reason why Dumbledore did not go after Grindelwald much earlier on.

Nagini get a back story here.

Even Fawkes (I think) makes an appearance.

So what do I think of the movie?

A little bit of a mess.

In patching the plot holes of the first movie, this movie dug new ones for itself?

Why?

Because some of the ideas introduced here, contradicts the Harry Potter movies....

So, did my "perfection complex" stopped me from enjoying this movie?

Maybe it did.

My Two Sen....

P.S. Just found out there are going to be 5 of these (movies) What The *beep*

Bohemian Rhapsody
An OK biopic of Freddie Mercury and Queen in general. Some scenes are draggy and can be omitted and in my opinion Freddie's sexuality should be explored more in the movie.
Remi Malek delivers an exceptional talent as Freddie Mercury. He truly can be in character in all the movies he acted.

TLDR - My rating: 7.5 / 10
