A Day - Strong concept with weak execution.
Can see the concept being done in a more coherent and engaging fashion. Usually the Groundhog Day mechanic always been the perspective of a single person. The ingenious difference here is three party stuck in the same timeloop. There lies an infinite possibilities and suspense. From figuring out how to prevent the same tragedy happening every time to the reason why it is happening to them. At the end the idea proven to be too clever for the filmmaker to handle. Cliche and fluffy Korean drama forcefully integrated into the complicated premise. Messy with predictable outcome and anticlimatic. |

The Outlaws (Kor 2018) – 7/10
Well done cat & mouse gangster movie. The Thousand Faces of Dunjia (Mand 2018) – 5.5/10 NiNi wears like a man I liked. Fun char interaction. Hoping for a sequel but unlikely. Because once Dunjia unlocked they suddenly can fly??? The Legend of Demon Cat (Mand 2018) – 6.7/10 A tale of love & betrayal. Strangely the two main char sink to 2nd fiddle in the 2nd half as the plot reveals the truth. Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (Kor -2018) – 7.5/10 Intriguing and emotional. Sequel coming this year as well! The Third Murder (Jap 2018) – 6.5/10 A very slow movie even by Masaharu Fukuyama standard. The Commuter – 6.6/10 A bit thrill and loud crash at the end. Den of Thieves – 7.1/10 Surprisingly watchable Heat-like movie. A sequel is confirmed. The Maze Runner: Death Cure (2018) – 4/10 Bad story. Lost in thrill and mystery. Braven - 5/10 Jason Momomommomomo no good. Marrowbone – 7/10 Don’t let the bad poster fooled you. A gorgeous good indie-like movie. Molly’s Game – 7/10 A very speedy movie. New dialogue like every 1-2sec. Must keep focused. Fate/Stay Night Heaven’s Feel (Jap 2018)– 7/10 Is this compilation of Unlimited Blade? Think Big Big (Mad 2018) – 6/10 A smaller scale story opposite the title. Decent. Monster Hunt 2 (Mand 2018) – 5.5/10 First one not that good and same for this. I guess HK film industry pretty much dying soon since multiple times Best Actor Tony Leong starred in this. Monkey King 3: Kingdom of Women (Cant 2018) – 6/10 A STEP DOWN compared to the predecessor. Bad cgi cerography. WuKong strength toned down drastically. Nevertheless, the 2nd best cny movie compared to others. Operation Red Sea (Mand 2018) – 7.5/10 A STEP UP of Operation Mekong. Great intense war action by Navy Seal of China. Dante Lam has confirmed making another Operation! Black Panther – 5.5/10 2nd worst marvel movie after Doc Strange. Quite boring. Wonderful! Liang Xi Mei (Mad 2018) – 6/10 Decent laugh. Liang Po Po cameo. Game Night – 7/10 Quite hilarious and entertaining. Staycation (Cant 2018) – 5.5/10 Johnson Lee better remains as TV host. The Wrinkle of Time – 5/10 A Disney movie directed by a woman. What am I watching??? Tomb Raider – 6/10 Acceptable but could be better. AV is golden. The movie is over when Daniel Wu was just about to get started. Get Hard Tongkat Ali (Mand 2018) – 6.2/10 Pretty naughty and hilarious and fun. This is a local production. The Post – 7/10 Good but also flawed. Not sure about historical accuracy. Marlina The Murderer In Four Acts (Indo 2018) – 7.2/10 Beautiful filming location. Beautiful cinematography. Slow but not boring. A hidden gem. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – 7/10 Quite overrated and got nominated because no more title in 2017 worth nominated. Peter Rabbit – 6.5/10 Mischief fun. The Strangers: Prey at Night – 6/10 Doesn’t rely on cheap jump-scare. A better remake. Red Sparrow – 6.5/10 Most daring JLaw role luckly didn’t turn up like Atomic Blonde. A lot of scene cuts and zoom in probably better off banned this movie altogether. A better JLaw movie than her previous Mother! or Passengers. The Hurricane Heist – 6/10 Surprise watchable heist action under a hurricane. Don’t be fooled by the bad movie title choice. The movie bombed probably due to lesser known actor & actress and of course the very bad title. Pacific Rim Uprising – 5/10 Serviceable for robot action sequences. Ignore the rest. Lee Chong Wei (Mand 2018) – 6.7/10 Perak specialist. Silver specialist. Mazinger Z: Infinite (Jap 2018) – 6.5/10 This anime released same week as Pacific Rim was actually a better movie. Mazin Go! Unsane – 7/10 I have no idea Soderbergh was using IPHONE to film this movie until I watched it. Despite the UGLY picture, the film is not bad. Please STOP using smartphone filming movie. Ready Player One 3D – 7.5/10 You know you’re gonna watch this so skip all the comments I’m telling you to watch this in IMAX 3D is worthwhile. A third Spielberg title without John William. |

Ready Player One (2018)
I am going to sound harsh... Since A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), Steven Spielberg has not made a good family base movie. Don't get me wrong, he made good movies after that (sans Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)), but not in the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Jurassic Park (1993) kinda way. Watched this yesterday, and it is mind-boggling how he managed to make this movie! It is a movie about Easter egg (which is launch during Easter weekend, some marketing genius is getting a big fat bones). And the movie is filled with NOTHING but Easter eggs and I am NOT complaining. No need to mention the obvious (Iron Giant), I see Marvin the Martian, Freddie Kruger, Ninja Turtles, doing Gandalf, without using the name Gandalf and The DeLorean with a Kitt, kit.... Lots more that you blink and you miss.... Movie take place in a dystopia where life is so bad that everyone escapes into a virtual world and greedy corporation cashes in on this. And the rest is eye candy. I usually complain about the lack of script, and have to say, as thin as the storyline is, the master storyteller, tells it well. And The Shining Scene!!! OMG!!!! BFG was a big let down. Steven had said that he sees a future with not big budget movies and everyone if their own film maker. Is this is last hurray before that happens? I hope not... I really needed this movie and enjoyed it immensely. Chances are, you would too My Two Sen This post has been edited by Mov_freak: Mar 31 2018, 09:27 AM |

The movie is fine. Expected story line. Happy ending. But it's just fine. Nothing good nor bad. And Patrick Schwarzenegger is hella fine. P/s: I knew nothing about its being a remake tho. Rating 6/10 |

Besides, I don't think he fits to act in action movies. His face is just...soft. Imo, he belongs in teen romance comedy sort of movie. If he works hard on his facial expression, he can be like Yamazaki Kento. From teen romance to sexy man in bed. |

A Quiet Place (2018)
I notice this movie, whilst compiling my annual horror movie viewing list. The premise, sounds promising, and have to be honest, expectation was NOT high. I am please to eat my low expectation, and proclaim here, THIS IS A GREAT HORROR MOVIE! Director/Main Male Lead John Krasinski and Main Female Lead Emily Blunt are actually husband and wife. I know, I know, they are asking for trouble to appear in the same movie together. Think Cleopatra (1963)... Think Eyes Wide Shut (1999) (Ironically, forever associated with Stanley Kubrick's last work...) Both highly publicize lemon it's day Can John and Emily avoid this... stigma? Yes, yes they can!! John, and I am hypothesizing here, learnt from past masters of suspense (Alfred?) and really, really put the pressure on his audience, keeping them at the edge of their seats. No gimmick, no fancy CGI (well, some, but not overwhelming so), and gave us an honest, thrilling, suspenseful, horror movie. At some point in the movie, I actually ask myself, why am I taking all this sensory abuse from the movie. Am I some kind of masochist? I surprise myself with the answer, yes, yes I am!!! This is a fantastic horror movie. Good script, good delivery (acting, directing the works) Surprise that Paramount has made this, and I cannot remember a good horror by paramount, until I google it (Sleepy Hollow is more dark comedy to me, Paranormal Activity, I will give them that etc etc...) This one is one to remember. I humbly submit to you, a bloody good horror movie. Enjoy My Two Sen. |

Red Sparrow (2018)
An above average spy story with surprisingly true to life settings, harsh environments that the spy goes true and excellent soundtrack. Jenifer Lawrence was near flawless, the Russian accent was on spot and with a lot of close ups that shows her emotionless face but intense emotions were brought to the screen. It is an art seeing how the movie made a dull emotionless setting that was filled with emotions, tension and thrill. At 140 mins, this is definitely a long movie, but the story was kept in pace, 140mins gone and i realized i watched the whole movie without going to the toilet. I enjoyed the movie and highly recommends it to anyone that wants a brutal, harsh and true to life movie. This film, in my humble opinion, is an art. 8.5/10 |

Rampage (2018)
Okay... Game adaptation. I will put the budget of this movie in the USD 200 million price range (cannot find any publication of this) So they took a page from Michael Bay's Transformer playbook, big budget, Dwayne Johnson and a popular game, and the result is... a run of the mill actioneer? A little bit of King Kong/Transformer/The US military and some genetic mumbo jumbo, a good movie does not make. And the worst of it, the big bad.... two wealthy 20/30 somethings entitled spoilt wall street siblings.... I think the Korean airline heiress sounds more annoying... Warner Brothers, what is happening to you. Why are you not making good movies anymore... You got the resource, please, just find GOOD SCRIPTS for Pete's sake.... I'm not quite sure what else I can say... My Two Sen... |

You were never really here - Another home run.
Movie God has been very generous this year. This early already bestowed me with 2 great films. Annihilation and now this. Lynne Ramsay is the unicorn film director with flawless track record. Granted this is only the fourth feature-length movie under her belt in a twenty odd years career. It's a shocker she decided to do a generic hitman with a conscience premise that usually found aplenty in direct to DVD releases. Her signature filmmaking skillset elevate this to a new dimension. Joaquin Phoenix is perfect as the hitman with some very loose screws in the head. Drifting in and out of PTSD lapses and a mean streak of violent dishing. He is not a sexy hitman with fancy moves. Just brute force with a hammer. He also suicidal until he got himself in a situation that punch above his weight. On top of that Johnny Greenwood providing the music which is another layer of awesome. Nicholas Winding Refn failed with Only God Forgives while Lynne Ramsay hit a home run with this. By award season time it may even get some nominations here and there. Joaquin Phoenix could get a nod. Again this is not your mindless Liam Neeson action movie and at its core still an "art" movie. |
