well it depend on area also la. Like you got penang all speak h.kian. U go kl all use cantonese. You go k.kinabalu all speak hakka.

Well refer to history when republic China chose national language cantonese only lost 1 vote to madarin

Tai fun or hor fun in Sandakan are widely understood.

"粿條" (Kuay teow) is based from Min Nan variety, which of course Hokkien is part of this.
