spot metering will only interpret light metering on the spot on the center of the picture (for some can multi spot)..in this case the lighting outside the jeans might be too overexposed by reflection on the floor so to have correct metering we can switch to spot metering and aim it on the jeans..pls correct me sifu sniper..

Multi spot is not spot metering. Anyway there's many articles online about camera's metering system. Usually I just stick with ESP(matrix) mertering but in this case, I saw some muted reflections on the floor (later zoomed in to leave those areas off) and I want to expose for the gray of the jeans and risk overexposing the floor. Turned out alright though

the af area size of xz-1 is not selectable and thus the large focusing area always ends up with some problem if u focus something of smaller size with distracting background, the camera
will always focus on the background as shown on my example above,i intend to focus on the chili not the leaf, the only way is to go even nearer to the subject so that it occupy most of the af area but of course this will throw your intended composition into salty sea or u can use the lousy manual focusing mode
another example

again focusing on the background
i hope olympus could give us selectable focusing area upon arrival of new firmware but i think this request is far reach, olympus would be too bz to handle this kind of small issue, but even my 7 years old panasonic fx-7 also can have 2 option for focusing area,a very small and a normal size 1
but apart from that this camera give me fantastic out of camera jpeg results

ignore the dirty bokeh and over process looks, its the flickr server compresses the image causing the artifacts and degrade of image quality there
Your chili and the girls face is not very contrasty compare with the background and I reckon since the cdaf will take focus samples even without half press shutter to get faster AF speed.. its a case of the guesswork went wrong.
What I do when shooting tougher conditions like flowers at low light etc... is put a key or something contrasty to get focus correct or use Iphone LED light to light up the subject to AF first.
That's hardly practical for insects though
As for the girl/backlit scenario... my 550D misses too but the XZ-1 shows green box though again... I think this is the sampling guesswork as above.
Don't shoot me.... my post strictly based on theory and pure keyboard warrior guesswork only.
