Fyi, otaku doesn't even mean you breathe, eat, sleep and die anime/manga. Otakus actually means that someone is very passionate about something. Just because the term got spread to USA via anime dubbing, people misinterpreted it to be the Jap version of 'geeks' or something. Btw, you don't have to spend every single minute in your life watching anime or reading manga to be called an otaku. |

QUOTE(Quazacolt @ Dec 9 2011, 01:14 AM) QUOTE(radkliler @ Dec 9 2011, 01:54 AM) Except that "otaku" IS the Japanese word for geeks or nerds? Dude, read this la. It's a second-person pronoun. Readers adapted as a term only. The actual meaning is still one who has an above average interest in something. Even the 'otakus' worry about the term getting known as extreme until the verge of dying. Seriously, perverse usage of the word has given it a notorious image. Even that William Gibson person made otaku look cooler thatn what the society has on otakus nowadays. Sometimes they even get confused and mixed-up between otaku and NEETs.Seriously, "otaku" means that you are so engross in something, that it borders on dangerous obsession. Just like today when mention Korea sure some boy band like 2PM or something come up. Or when mention Japan, Bleach or Naruto come up. Why? Because terms got mixed up in translations and bla bla bla. Sorry for digression btw. Still waiting for next few episodes before the big break. |

QUOTE Otaku (おたく / オタク?) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga or video games. Obsessive and above average interest are two different definitions altogether. |

Smh. I was talking about the original definitions and you are talking about modern usage. 2 different things. But yes you are correct then. I admit my ineptness.
