QUOTE(G-17 @ Apr 12 2011, 09:51 PM) ^I'm curious on how you got the ext.HDD to boot (without specifying in BIOS/EFI) Actually, to boot into ext drive without messing with the BIOS/EFI, you'll need to modify the local drive's MBR to point back to the external drive. Its the only way to do it.Also, you might want to read up on Apt pinning if you're thinking of mixing Testing/Unstable sources. That way you (in theory) keep your system a tad more well-behaved. I can give you a run-down on pinning if you want, though reading Debian's wiki will be infinitely more informative. |

QUOTE(beckham_zed @ Apr 20 2011, 12:57 AM) Owh, ok.... Actually, I use emesene for my MSN (very creative but i still have some other problems with pidgin, like when i try to send a file to other user that using ym, it didn't succesfull. Plus, i can't buzz others. It just shows the msg "buzzing (the people's name)" but in fact, didn't buzz him/her. However, I downloaded a plugin and hacked a bit of my Pidgin for it to work with my work's OCS network. Took me a bit of time but I sort of got it to work. |

QUOTE(Patent @ Jun 2 2011, 06:26 PM) Hi guys, I just installed lubuntu on my netbook. You have to make an xorg.conf. If its ATI card, there is a command to generate your xorg.conf based on your current settings. Then you modify that file and its done.I tried to increase the resolution using xrandr with the command xrandr --fb 1280x720 --output LVDS1 --scale 1.25x1.2. The problem is, the change is not persistent after the computer reboot. How do I make it persistent ? I can't find xorg.conf or ~/.xprofile folder either. Alternatively, you can use your catalyst or your nvidia control panel (just like windows) to make the changes. If you are on an intel graphics chip, I'm not sure how to help you. No experience there. Sorry |

Also, who says that we have to be humourless just because we are *nix geeks. I really like the LesBian. I might go home and find out more about it. WAITAMIN!!!! its says parody at the bottom..... QUOTE(scorps @ Jun 7 2011, 12:54 AM) I assume it would be the same thing as when you change Squeeze's sources.list to Wheezy. If its true, then I've done that before. The result is dependency hell for some programs. When you apt-get install, there might be alot of dependencies missing. If the program is compatible with both Squeeze and Wheezy, then you might not meet dependency hell. |

Ok guys, new question time.
I don't understand the initscript line : CODE case "$1" in I know what 'case' does but I don't understand $1. When I open up all my rc0.d-rcX.d files, i find scripts with that code. I'm trying to write my own initscript but this has got me confused. Anybody can explain to me? (I tried googling but I didn't understand the explanations) Simple terms pls. I am dense. |

Thanks G-17. I can't seem to brain this... yet....
Edit: AHA! I think you misunderstood me. I understand what variables are. The problem was that I couldn't find the definition for $0-$9. For example : CODE prob="I dunno LOL" echo $prob The result would be : I dunno LOL My problem is that I can't find what echo $1 is. echo $1 results in empty. QUOTE(G-17 @ Jul 11 2011, 08:47 PM) @Farkinid I read that $0-$9 are special variables in bash. Therefore these variables are already set and cannot be changed. I just can't find a list that explains what they are. Can't really help unless you tell me more about the said script. Basically, in grandma terms (cos I'm old), in order to echo $X, you need a corresponding $X case statement. So the case "$1" you were talking about earlier is (in theory) what echo "$1" is trying to pull. Sorry I can't explain this sort of stuff better. My case is somewhat like being self-taught on a piano. I can play just fine and am able to read sheet-music for myself, but if you ask me to teach someone, I'll struggle with the terminology and whatnot. >_< Are you perhaps trying to awk something? Just like how $$ = PID of bash (i think), I'm trying to find that $0-$9 are. But the gods of google have deemed that this knowledge is to trivial and not worth the time of the googlebots. |

QUOTE(G-17 @ Jul 12 2011, 09:37 PM) @Farkinid Thanks man, your help is very much appreciated. Not quite. $0 - $9 aren't exactly "special parameters", meaning they don't have specific functions depending on number. They're just positional arguments. $0 is usually the name of the script. $1, $2, $3 etc is referenced to the positions in the command line. Here's an example (coincidence cos I linked this to someone with a similar question a couple of weeks back ... lol): http://bashshell.net/shell-scripts/positional-parameters/ If you need me to be more in-depth, I'm not quite confident I can explain precisely without meandering off-tangent (no, I didn’t actually misunderstand you the first time round) or limiting shell terminology. Tell you what, we can approach this 2 ways. I can't teach you how to cook dinner, but I can either cook dinner for you, or introduce someone who can teach you how to cook. You (probably) won't learn much if it's the former, but it'll at least be a fix for the problem you're facing (if any). If so, post and link me to the scripts and I'll see what I can do. If it's the latter, try reading this and see if you get your head around it: http://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/bash.html http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/li...bash/index.html http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/li...ash2/index.html Note: I'll be a tad busy this week, so apologies if I'm late with replying. I guess I'm gonna have no more free time now. Gotta catch up on bash and XML. |

QUOTE(ikah @ Jul 13 2011, 03:55 PM) any sifu can teach, wat software similar as C & c cleaner, used to clean those registry.. I better stop you here before any more misconceptions are formed.using ubuntu 10.04 lts... please advise In linux, there is no registry. There is no need for CCleaner. QUOTE(G-17 @ Jul 13 2011, 01:59 PM) If you want to learn at a more leisurely pace, you could always install OpenBox and hack away at teh rc.xml trying to build pipemenus. You'll be surprised how much you can learn from it, though not exactly network specialized (which I assume is your "genre" of preference) Yeah, networks is more my thing. I can understand wireshark but I just can't seem to get bash to work. Sigh |

On a totally different note, has anybody got AMD's Radeon SDK drivers to work in linux? I require it to run a very specialized type of program.

QUOTE(G-17 @ Jul 27 2011, 01:34 PM) As I've mentioned many times before, I have almost zero experience with ATI on Linux (or any OS for that matter), but maybe you can point me to the SDK sources/packages/page and I'll see if I can consult some people or maybe run a virtualized simulation or something. No promises, though, and it'll probably be after working hours. Don't worry about not knowing anything about it. It was a shot in the dark.Sorry for being so useless on the ATI front. I have no machines with ATI cards and I've not played with SDKs in ages. Thing is, you can download the drivers from here : http://developer.amd.com/sdks/radeon/Pages/default.aspx When I try to build the drivers, build fails. Running checkinstall and build gives me about 1 million errors. |

About AMD/ATI drivers, I swear if this keeps up I'm moving to nVidia solutions. Their SDK-s are easier to install and run. Using it in my office desktop and its easy to get running. The only problem is that the graphics processor on this desktop is low end. Therefore the processing power isn't enough.

QUOTE(G-17 @ Aug 1 2011, 11:13 AM) Sorry, I haven't gotten round to trying out the SDK you linked me to. TBH, I completely forgot >_< Don't worry about it. Like I said, its a shot in the dark. I really don't expect much help on this.My net's slow right now (as is the rest of Malaysia, looking at the Broadband/P2P forum) so I can't download it here, but I have most of today off so I'll try it out as soon as I get home to Singapore later in the evening. Once again, sorry. |
