I have testdisk, but too lazy to use it... yet whistling.gif

And I meant by accidental formatting when I haven't backed up data from the HDD yet sweat.gif

Your options are :-

  • Open your cpu and look
  • Check your lshw. It should tell you the card model. You be able to find out from there
I honestly think just opening it up is easier.
*
I don't think you can do the latter with a laptop.

Not really sure, but try lspci.

... What kind of hardware is he using btw? If it's a PC and the monitor's port is located on the motherboard, pretty sure it's an integrated GPU.

If it's a laptop there'll be a need to know the make of that laptop and specs based on vendor's listings.

I bought a new laptop which had switchable graphic using Intel HD and ATI card. I just install crunchbang recently but i'm not sure which GPU its using.  hmm.gif
*
what model?

btw if it has Intel HD and a ATI card, most like it's a discrete GPU. the Intel one is an integrated GPU.

probably you're seeking tips on how to enable switching between using the Intel HD and ATI? I have no idea how switching works since I don't have an Intel HD even though my laptop is Intel (i7 brah whistling.gif)

Which process you're referring to? XOrg? To me it's pretty normal, nothing too hurting, especially since you're watching a video.

XOrg really does use that amount of proc power, as how on average, not watching video, XOrg idles for me around 40~50%.

Go to the AMD graphics card website and get the latest from there. As of 11.4, problems with kernel versions 2.6.38++ has been fixed.

Oh, the latest is now 11.5! Whoa, I wonder whether I'll want to upgrade or not...

Get it here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linu...deon_linux.aspx

Whoa. Did you try checking the DKMS module trees?

CODE
sudo dkms install -m fglrx -v <module version>

Although in some cases DKMS might tell you to do this:

CODE
sudo dkms build -m fglrx -v <module version>

before proceeding with "dkms install".

Also please remember to do

CODE
sudo aticonfig --initial
after installation of the driver.

Did you try installing with the ATI card on? I have no experience with laptops that can switch between integrated and discrete GPUs, but just in case if you hadn't tried that yet.

You either phrased it wrong, or I've misunderstood something. Are you saying X-server uses 40~50% CPU when your comp is idle (as in, doing nothing). Most X related processes take up very little CPU (1.0 - 3.0% in htop on this 7 yr old Pentium Dual Core I'm typing on .... even less on my newer hardware) .... you sure it's X that you're monitoring or some KDE or Compiz process? cos that much load while idle is totally not normal for anything usr/bin/X -related, unless there's some leak or scheduling problem .

Added on May 26, 2011, 8:45 pmSorry man, but I have almost zero experience with ATI or switchable graphics on Linux.
*
I guess not. Well, I was looking at GNOME's System Monitor launched using gksudo, and that's what I'm seeing now...

... On top, though, I'm getting around 19% and I'm on KDE, have Firefox and Chrome open each with a dozen tabs or so in them, Audacious, SMPlayer with a 720p video on, XChat on the second desktop, a Twitter client running and pretty much that's that.

I wouldn't want to waste a minimalist setup on it.

... Actually, I'm currently running Ubuntu with GNOME+Unity, KDE and Openbox on a first-gen i7 laptop.

i7 is nothing actually. Right now the newer kernels seem to consume more RAM as well, so you'd better be prepared with more RAM sticks whistling.gif

For this week I just started my shift at the notebook department of my shop...

... and there are lots of hardware which just screams me to want to try install a Linux distro and see how well it supports the hardware.

Of current interest are those with AMD's APUs and a certain Acer laptop which is just RM100 more expensive than what I have but is twice meatier... and has a freaking Blu-ray drive shocking.gif

Also I really want to try Ubuntu on the Nvidia Tegra devices.

Sigh, there has been problems with ATI cards and their driver... with the kernels.

Last time I had to manually patch the driver to suit the 2.6.38 kernels.

And then I had to do another patch to allow the driver to work in the 2.6.39 kernels.

Also with new hardware rolling out, it's just a matter of time before one blurts "God damn it! Everytime they make new hardware they break my <insert your favorite Linux distro's name here>'s support! Now this is why I hate buying new things!" etc.

Fortunately ATI's binary driver blobs' support for newer and newer kernels keep improving for each Catalyst release.

Cocooh: When you say "scrot", are you referring to the screenshot-taking utility or the ScrotWM? The way you say things makes me confused between those two, considering the amount of time you've been spending on desktop moddings (Which I already gave up on making a good-looking one).

QUOTE(Angel of Deth @ Jul 31 2011, 09:06 PM)
Unfortunately, Tegra 2 is one of the worst mobile GPU out there, since its not matured. Also, Ubuntu has been reported to be working with chroot + vnc on SGSII, the same method with the X10.
*
I see. So that explains why the Asus Transformer seems to be running a certain ninja game slower than one of my colleague's handphone.

Might as well I grab the ViewSonic Viewpad with Intel Atom and kick both Windows 7 and Android 1.6 off it, and get a custom *buntu installation starting from the base CLI, like how one would go around installing Arch Linux in common practice before adding a GUI to it.

And now with KDE 4.7 showing off to be promising on mobile devices, I'd waste no further time in deciding what GUI I want it to be on.

... Just... I need RM1.5k for that... actually, scratch some dollars off it since I have access to staff prices brows.gif but still, better be safe...

Configuring a whole PC yourself is fun but the time you need to spend isn't.

Ubuntu just helps making the process shorter and simpler, that's it. It doesn't mean I can't copy Arch's philosophy (start from bare-boned installations) and work my way into installing my DE from scratch. They gave an option for the common user, they also gave options for those who feel they can manage their way from zero to a pretty DE.

Arch? Working from zero to up. I wonder if I can make profit from configuring an Arch Linux, Gentoo or SourceMage desktop, because if there is any I really want that kind of a job.

QUOTE(cocooh @ Aug 8 2011, 03:23 PM)
I wonder why people will actually create such threads

Each distro has their own philosophy and flaws as well , but we dont have to workship it like god or sumting  doh.gif

But imo , Ubuntu forum is really full with trolls sometimes  rclxub.gif
*
1. Because. Also, it's fun making a topic that will make people bicker. You don't need to join, just start. tongue.gif

2. Which is a problem with almost anywhere.

3. Who says they can't have trolls? The mods admitted if Linus or Mark was around and they trolled, they too will get infractions as any other user would.

Can you actually install and administer a working Sorcerer/SourgeMage setup? It's a process that requires considerable dexterity and patience.

There are those kinds of jobs available, btw,,, mostly for the server side. You'll probably require a bunch of certifications from RedHat to be even considered eligible for an interview, though.
*
The patience part kills me, though. And I don't need to burn out my own patience to do it, someone will burn out theirs for me and will threaten to destroy my laptop while I'm still compiling the base system - literally.

QUOTE(G-17 @ Aug 14 2011, 01:37 AM)
Add that to the Tiling thread too. I'm curious as to what you did as I have never had that problem before on any distro (not even ScrotWM runing in OSX)
I don't use KDE, but yeah, I've often heard of users disabling Nepomuk to free up resources. What is Nepomuk, anyway? Long-lost cousin of Alvin & the Chimpmunks?... or is it some Thai kickboxer?

As for the Gnome vs KDE thing, it always goes back and forth. Many people switched to Gnome when version 2 came out cos KDE3 was bland, then when KDE 4 came out, they went back, only to be plagued by stability problems, so they go back to Gnome again, then whe KDE 4.3 or 4.4 came out, they all went back to KDE to play with the new Bespin themes and icons, then when Elementary came out, they went back to Gnome, then when the devs  announce Gnome3 and Unity, they go back to KDE again. I don't see it ending, really.

Personally, I think QT (QTcurve in particular) is much more modular than GTK2 and GTK3, but the problem is app integration since many of the more popular ones use a GTK backend. If only they found a way to get a decent lightweight suite running on QT apps without the need for KDE and all those annoying app names that begin with K. GTK3 is definitely a step-up from GTK2+, but with Gnome being in its current state of flux and turmoil, it might be some time before we see anything good come of it. Don't think it'll top QT, though.

But hey, what do I know... I'm a ncurses guy. laugh.gif

NEPOMUK (Networked Environment for Personal, Ontology-based Management of Unified Knowledge) is an open-source software specification that is concerned with the development of a social semantic desktop that enriches and interconnects data from different desktop applications using semantic metadata stored as RDF. Initially, it was developed in the NEPOMUK project and cost 17 million euros, of which 11.5 million was funded by the European Union.

...

NEPOMUK-KDE is featured as one of the newer technologies in KDE SC 4. It uses the RDF store Soprano and, on a technical level, allows associating metadata to various items present on a normal user's desktop such as files, bookmarks, e-mails, and calendar entries. Metadata can be arbitrary RDF; as of KDE 4, tagging is the most user-visible metadata application.

Nepomuk isn't a KDE-exclusive thing, KDE just happens to adopt it for KDE SC 4. Naturally, KDE is based in . I think I'm beginning to understand why there was the hate for KDE 4 when it first came out...

Since what it does is track the data used on every single application you have, I can see why most users can be so concerned about it because it eats up resources in doing so. Anyway, I don't think the KDE desktop is something you should want to use in low-resource environments such as older computers and/or low-spec'd computers, because I don't really think that's the focus of the KDE desktop, and it puzzles me why people are complaining about its heavyweightness when they can opt not to use it. Probably they like to ridicule some other people about it as well? Sure, we're in the Linux world, but still. If you really want low resource usage go for the small memory footprint window managers... or just dump Xorg. DEs will and will always be the most resource-heavy, no matter how light, component of what makes a GUI environment in the Linux world.

I really want to see how KDE performs with their optimized KWin with OpenGL ES 2.0 support, though.

Cocooh: Because they liked the old KDE 3, but I don't have a reason which can convince me why I should like it myself.

I'd rather someone work on GNOME 2.x and make it a GNOME Legacy fork.
