Been hand itchy these few days and went to try LightDM laugh.gif

looks cool but idk bout its dependency since i ran it on live at Oneiric's Daily Build

sleek and minimal , might wanna replace slim with lightdm once it matures laugh.gif

While everyone is sticking with Gnome 2.23 , i think 11.10 will have a drop of user number sweat.gif as everything being ported to gnome 3 , it will dispose gnome 2.23 out of nowhere

laugh.gif Best for me to stick with Scrot

The RCs have been out for a while (Experimental repos if you're on Debian, Testing if you're on Arch, Gentoo also)
Official release was yesterday, I think.

Problem is, 3.0 seems to break my system's hwmon temp readings, so I had to edit my conky to pull lm-sensors output instead of hwmon. Other than that, all seems good as long as you have multi-arch support enabled.

I posted a workaround for that some time back. You just need to add pcie_aspm=force to your GRUB line in /etc/default/grub. (as root or sudo)

For example, on one of my systems it reads;
CODE
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="e4rat-preload quiet splash"

... I modified it to look like this;
CODE
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="e4rat-preload quiet splash pcie_aspm=force"

Note: Yours is probably just "quiet splash" (I have e4rat doing ext4 preloading on this machine, so yours won't have it probably), so just add pcie_aspm=force to the end of it just before the quotes.

Remember to update GRUB after any modifications (again, as root or with a sudo in the beginning)
CODE
update-grub

and reboot.

It won't solve all the regressions, but most, at least. If your system doesn't behave after that, just remove the pcie bit, update-grub and reboot again.
My netbook isn't affected by the regression so I can't say I see any difference, but some people have reported they're battery life going back to normal again. For me, my idle mobo temp reading seems to be a few degrees lower, which is also good thing, I guess.

Nice thumbup.gif with this , i wont hesitate to upgrade once it hit stable (which might takes time for it to come)

Hmm , if you want stability , try Debian laugh.gif

For eyecandy + repo ppa based + lightweight

Go for elementary os luna when it releases later this year sweat.gif or try Jupiter which is gnome 2.23 based

For clutterless and minimal to the most , and install the things which you need only - Arch Linux shocking.gif

For user friendly - Linux Mint

Seriously , i hate both gnome3 and unity shakehead.gif scrot is amazing icon_rolleyes.gif

My install very minimal , Debian minimal + Scrot + Slim , low dependencies , less gnome shits = Lightweight system laugh.gif

Nope, that's just a misconception concocted by the fanbois who think Arch = religion.
I have an Arch and a Debian (GRML)  install on different partitions on the same computer. Both use the same WM, same journaling (root=ext4, /home=xfs), same swap size, same apps, same kernel versions (2.6.39-ARCH vs 2.6.39-aptosid) Both boot in the same amount of time (actually, my GRML boots around a couple of seconds faster), consume around the same amount of RAM, and take up around the same HDD space. Debian tends to install more Xorg libraries than Arch, but you can easily remove them with smxi (google it) or manually via aptitude. Arch's package manager (pacman) is faster than apt, but lacks gpg signing. Both also use a single rc file for configuration (GRML uses rc-file instead of Debian's default sysv-rc).

You can apply the K.I.S.S philosophy to either.

Cocooh: When you say "scrot", are you referring to the screenshot-taking utility or the ScrotWM? The way you say things makes me confused between those two, considering the amount of time you've been spending on desktop moddings (Which I already gave up on making a good-looking one).
I see. So that explains why the Asus Transformer seems to be running a certain ninja game slower than one of my colleague's handphone.

Might as well I grab the ViewSonic Viewpad with Intel Atom and kick both Windows 7 and Android 1.6 off it, and get a custom *buntu installation starting from the base CLI, like how one would go around installing Arch Linux in common practice before adding a GUI to it.

And now with KDE 4.7 showing off to be promising on mobile devices, I'd waste no further time in deciding what GUI I want it to be on.
... Just... I need RM1.5k for that... actually, scratch some dollars off it since I have access to staff prices brows.gif but still, better be safe...

Scrotwm of course laugh.gif quite lazy so ive eaten the wm laugh.gif

Seriously, people who argue about distros do Linux no favors whatsoever. They're like those anime otaku who worship pictures of 2D women (who all look like walking embryos, fyi) just because they failed at getting a gf in real life.

Saw someone linking your post tongue.gif

I wonder why people will actually create such threads

Each distro has their own philosophy and flaws as well , but we dont have to workship it like god or sumting doh.gif

But imo , Ubuntu forum is really full with trolls sometimes rclxub.gif

I've used  Arch on and off for a good few years now, before it become "popular", and trust me, despite being a decent distro, they have tons of trolls over at the Arch forums, more so than most distros if you take a userbase:troll ratio. Only difference is, they troll other places, not their own. Whenever you see a write up or comparo that includes Arch and it doesn't end up the "winner" I guarantee you'll see the comments section flooded by butthurt Archtards. Same goes for forums. Example; If there's a thread titled "Fedora or Ubuntu, which one is better for my system?", there'll definitely be some person who'll post "Arch", as if he's a blind halfwit who can't even read the question.

Sure, it happens with other distro users as well, but none can compare to Arch and Mac fanboys in that regard.

Personally, if you were Ubuntu forum maintainer and saw a great number of Arch trolls posting, you should be somewhat chuffed. Your distro has to be doing something right if you've got this many trolls who signed up just to talk about something totally unrelated.

Can you actually install and administer a working Sorcerer/SourgeMage setup? It's a process that requires considerable dexterity and patience.

There are those kinds of jobs available, btw,,, mostly for the server side. You'll probably require a bunch of certifications from RedHat to be even considered eligible for an interview, though.
*
Ahh , well said biggrin.gif

N btw , ive fixed the fonts in scrotwm biggrin.gif Gonna add that to my documentation

Been trying out KDE since Archies are mostly hooked by it and bringing gnome users to the second place (Openbox is even more than these 2 , comparing 2 heavy DE's)

KDE , i would say , much more lightweight than Gnome shocking.gif

Disabling Anokandi , Nepomuk and s something something really returns me my long lost memory laugh.gif

On startup , KDE 4.7 desktop only eats 170MB as compared laugh.gif

Gonna continue trying as much as i can icon_rolleyes.gif

Add that to the Tiling thread too. I'm curious as to what you did as I have never had that problem before on any distro (not even ScrotWM runing in OSX)
I don't use KDE, but yeah, I've often heard of users disabling Nepomuk to free up resources. What is Nepomuk, anyway? Long-lost cousin of Alvin & the Chimpmunks?... or is it some Thai kickboxer?

As for the Gnome vs KDE thing, it always goes back and forth. Many people switched to Gnome when version 2 came out cos KDE3 was bland, then when KDE 4 came out, they went back, only to be plagued by stability problems, so they go back to Gnome again, then whe KDE 4.3 or 4.4 came out, they all went back to KDE to play with the new Bespin themes and icons, then when Elementary came out, they went back to Gnome, then when the devs  announce Gnome3 and Unity, they go back to KDE again. I don't see it ending, really.

Personally, I think QT (QTcurve in particular) is much more modular than GTK2 and GTK3, but the problem is app integration since many of the more popular ones use a GTK backend. If only they found a way to get a decent lightweight suite running on QT apps without the need for KDE and all those annoying app names that begin with K. GTK3 is definitely a step-up from GTK2+, but with Gnome being in its current state of flux and turmoil, it might be some time before we see anything good come of it. Don't think it'll top QT, though.

But hey, what do I know... I'm a ncurses guy. laugh.gif

Nepomuk = sista virus from Thailand biggrin.gif

Ahh , this is what ive did to fix my scrotwm :

xset +fp /usr/share/fonts &

tongue.gif

Additional whistling.gif

Well , Gnome Shell really kills me off , slow response rate , barely , about 1-2 sec delay in actions shocking.gif

Elementary doh.gif based on gnome 3 but imma try it out whether it is really "light"

imo , wm is still better tongue.gif Openbox , evilwm and scrotwm f3v thumbup.gif

^Hmm, strange. I thought Xlib and XCB would automatically perfor the integration of font paths. I don't need to do that even Gentoo, Sorcerer or Arch.... Only BSD's ask for xset.

Although I usually set my preferred font path to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts

That is the weirdest part , coz in Debian , ive never encounter this problem (where its not detected)

But this have solve my problem by including it in xinitrc laugh.gif

The project is called Mate

However their website is down shocking.gif

In the mean time , the packages are available for Arch Linux users but i guess it will be ported to other distro as well

As for an OS , Fusion OS is offering the forked Gnome 2 as default de biggrin.gif

This distro seems to be unorganized , http://www.fusionos.net/

Some stated it is based on Ubuntu 10.10 while other stated it was based out of ReactOS shocking.gif

Something to ask,since i switchd from ubuntu to cruchbang on my notebook:
-how to make flash audio work on chrome debain version? Tried to apt-get pluseaudio,but failed
-how to have volume control on desktop?
*
Crunchbang which version ? Openbox or XFCE hmm.gif ?

As for volume control , do you have any buttons or keys to control the volume ?

For a gui volume control , Crunchbang wiki stated that xfce mixer is already pre-installed , try and search for it

As for the Chromium , what version is it ? Did you install it from the repo ? Or you download it from the website ?

As i can see from their repo , Chromium is not been updated since Jan shocking.gif

Try download the latest Google Chrome from here

If Chromium is your choice , try these :

In terminal , type

su -
nano /etc/apt/source.list or gedit /etc/apt/source.list

Add the following

deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ testing non-free main

Then type , apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
