Fergie rules out fresh faces
QUOTE Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out the possibility of Manchester United making signings when the January transfer window reopens in the New Year. Clubs will be able to add to their squads from Saturday, although the vastly-experienced Scot will not be strengthening his star-studded list of players. The Red Devils have been linked with a move for Real Madrid's former Portsmouth midfielder Lassana Diarra, although the club will not be getting out their chequebook. United brought in Chris Smalling, Javier Hernandez and Bebe last summer and, while Danish keeper Anders Lindegaard has already been secured, he will be the only acquisition. When questioned whether the club would be bringing in fresh faces in January, Ferguson replied. "Nope, not at all. Definitely not." Loan exit Rather than bring in fresh faces, Ferguson has a vast selection at his fingertips and he is looking to loan out some of his fringe players. Rising talent Federico 'Kiko' Macheda has been linked with a loan stint in Italy and United's boss feels regular football is exactly what the Italian needs. Ferguson has been delighted with the progress of Danny Welbeck at Sunderland and believes the 20-year-old's form deserves an England call-up. The Red Devils tactician has sat down with Macheda and hopes that if he goes out on loan he could replicate Welbeck's success elsewhere. "I had a chat with the boy," he said of Macheda. "I think he's in the same position as Welbeck and Mame Diouf. "We have a clutch of young strikers at the club and that was the reason we let Danny and Mame Diouf out. "They are young and they need games. Kiko comes into that category now. Progression "I didn't want them to go, but seeing how the squad is shaping up with Michael Owen fit again now. Chicarito has progressed really well. "We've brought in Bebe as well. He'll be a striker. I can play Obertan in that position also. "In the case of Danny Welbeck it's proved a point that through consistent football he has progressed dramatically, fantastically well. "In his two previous years he played in two cups finals. He played in the semi-final against Everton. "In a consistent nature he didn't have enough football to bring the progress we're seeing now. He's been fantastic at Sunderland. "He must eventually get in the squad for England through his performances this season. That's exactly what we wanted. "When I had a chat with Kiko I explained to him the Welbeck situation. The experience of going to another club can pan out exactly the same for him." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_6626130,00.html Anderson backed by Ferguson QUOTE Sir Alex Ferguson believes Anderson has the ability to replace Paul Scholes in Manchester United's midfield. Former England international Scholes has been an integral part of the Red Devils' success throughout his glittering career. But at the age of 36 it is inevitable that the talented veteran will be forced to call time on his Premier League career in the not-too-distant future. Brazil international Anderson, who recently signed a new long-term deal at Old Trafford, has impressed hugely in recent weeks. And Ferguson feels that once the 22-year-old can add more goals to his developing game he will become difficult to dislodge from his first-team plans. Top player The Scot said: "Anderson's form has gone up a notch recently and I was delighted when he signed a new contract before Christmas. "He knows he should score more goals and if and when he does, he will undoubtedly be a top player. "He is still only 22, he had electric pace from a standing start and a great appetite for the ball, which he can work out of very tight situations. "Opponents can never rest easy when he is buzzing around them. "Injury to Paul Scholes has given Anderson an extended run that he has grabbed and long term I hope he can prove to be Paul's successor. "It is a big ask to reach that level and the challenge will test his confidence, but someone will have to step up to the plate one day!" http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_6626013,00.html |
