AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Hi alien, I uploaded the Scholes Centurion video (a compilation of all 100 goals he scored throughout his career in Man United).

If it's allowed, I thought why not share with other forummers by posting the link in the first few posts. The link is : http://rapidshare.com/files/367460321/PS_Cntrn1x0.rar =)

Edit (08 Nov 2010): Looks like the link is no longer working (thx to sinoffire for notifying) so I reuploaded the video to a new link:

World Exclusive: Qatar royal family plan £1.5bn takeover of Manchester United

QUOTE
The most famous name in English football is the target for the next wave of Arab invaders.

Across Manchester arch-rivals City are already owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group, led by billionaire Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Now Qatar Holdings, an investment vehicle for the Qatari royal family, are pursuing the £1.5billion takeover of Manchester United. The Gulf state of Qatar has already landed the right to stage the 2022 World Cup finals in an audacious international coup.

The Qataris have also accumulated a huge range of trophy assets in England.

These include the Harrods store and spectacular London properties such as One Hyde Park, the Shard of Glass and the US Embassy in Grosvenor Square.

Last week the Qatar Foundation, the charity wing of the ruling family, bought the sponsorship rights to the Barcelona shirt. It was a declaration of their intention of getting Qatar accepted as a global football brand.

Qatar Holdings is the third largest shareholder in car-maker VW and has a stake in Porsche.

Its chairman, Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani (right), who is also Qatar’s prime minister, is keen to add to their portfolio of investments and sees United as an iconic acquisition. The arrival of the Qatar billions would pave the way for the end of the controversial Glazer family reign.

The Arabs can satisfy any request for proof of funding from the Glazer family in the United States and are also willing to fund a massive transfer fund for manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

United’s massive fan base around the globe are certain to welcome the change of ownership from the controversial Glazer regime.

The American family seized control for £790million in 2005.

But the Americans have incensed United supporters by borrowing against the club’s assets.

They loaded £716m in debt against the club provoking outrage among United fans who believe too much of the club’s income was being directed to pay prohibitive interest payments. A few weeks ago the Glazers did reduce United’s debt by paying back around £200m in PIK loans.

These were payment in kind loans from three hedge funds that were charging 16.25 per cent in annual interest.

Many City observers believed that reduction in debt could spark a Glazer sell-off. There were even rumours that the funding for the change had come from overseas investors keen to take a stake in United – but the Glazers denied this.

A group of United fans calling themselves the Red Knights did try to launch a takeover coup a few months ago but backed off when they discovered the Glazers would not entertain a bid of around £1bn. However, the Qatar Holdings have set aside around £2.5bn in funds to purchase the club and provide Sir Alex Ferguson with unlimited spending power in the transfer market.

So far the Glazers have resisted attempts to drive them out of Old Trafford even though the fans have been so critical of their reign.

Now the scene could be set for the Glazers to leave with a massive profit. Qatar Holdings have been linked with a host of European giants including Barcelona, Real Madrid and United’s Premier League rivals, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Newcastle.

However, United have always been top of their wish list.

The purchase of United would leave the club debt free and the most powerful club in the current transfer market.

And even neighbours City, with all their wealth, may find it hard to compete with the potential red revolution.

Chelsea postponement no issue for Manchester United

QUOTE
BBC Sport understands Manchester United have no issue over Sunday's game at Chelsea being postponed.

It was called off on Saturday due to heavy snow, but much of it had melted by Sunday and the pitch was fine.

Rio Ferdinand has been critical, but it could have favoured United with Anderson and Nemanaja Vidic doubtful.

He said on Twitter "Did anyone see the Ipswich game? Pitch covered in snow....so how come that game is played and ours is postponed?."

Some Manchester United fans on the BBC's internet forum 606 questioned whether Chelsea, who are having a poor run, had called off the Premier League game to delay playing their in-form opponents.

However, only the match referee, police, the local authorities or the Premier League can call a game off. And the Premier League confirmed that the game was called off, some 27 hours before kick-off at the behest of the police and the local authority.

A Chelsea spokesman confirmed on Monday: "The decision to postpone the game was taken on safety grounds after comprehensive consultations between the club, local authorities and the police.

"A high-profile event of this scale affects an area much wider than Stamford Bridge, and considering the icy conditions forcast, an early decision was taken to ensure the safety of both fans and those staffing the event."

The Premier League argues that, had a decision been made on the day, it would have faced criticism from fans who had already travelled from the north west.

In a later tweet, United defender Ferdinand referred to the safety issue. He said: "Safety for fans travelling to the game is the general feedback....I get it tweeps!"

United gained some benefit from the postponement with captain Vidic and midfielder Anderson struggling to be fit, both having been ill. Furthermore, midfielder Paul Scholes is out until the new year.

Chelsea may also have been pleased since Didier Drogba and Michael Essien are struggling to find their best form and Frank Lampard has only recently recovered from injury.

Meanwhile, the Premier League is confident the big freeze will not lead to serious fixture congestion at the end of the season.

Eight matches have been postponed due to the weather so far - including two involving United.

But Premier League officials say there are sufficient dates set aside to cope.

A spokesman said: "Our football department will already have contingency dates in mind and will work closely with the affected clubs to get new dates agreed as quickly as possible."

The game between Blackpool and Manchester United at Bloomfield Road has already been rearranged to the last week in January.

We probably have a family rivalry as well. Rio vs Anton! Are they still betting to see who score more goals? laugh.gif

We should play 2 up top. They are running out of CB already. 3 CBs are out injured [Bramble, Turner, Mensah] while Cattermole is suspended [5 bookings]. As always, Bent will be the main danger. He just seems to score when playing against the big teams. Not to mention now Gyan is there as well.

Berbatov lands Bulgarian award

QUOTE
December 21, 2010

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has been named Bulgarian Player of the Year for the seventh time.

The 29-year-old beat off competition from Gaziantepspor forward Ivelin Popov and FC Twente goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov to claim the award for the fourth straight year and equal Hristo Stoichkov's record for consecutive wins.

Berbatov, who previously won the accolade in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009, is currently top scorer in the Barclays Premier League with 11 goals.

Glazers not for selling United despite rumoured interest from Qatar

QUOTE
Manchester United remain adamant that the Reds are not for sale and are ready to rebuff any approach by Qatar Holdings who are reported to be preparing a £1.5bn bid.

The company is the investment arm of the royal family of the burgeoning oil and gas rich tiny country of Qatar.

Qatar Holdings’ chief executive and chairman, Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani, who is Qatar’s prime minister, wants to increase their portfolio of investments and United is viewed as an iconic acquisition to add to the Harrods Group it bought last May for £1.5bn from Fulham owner Mohammed Al Fayed.

United’s owners the Glazers have consistently put the blocks on any takeover insisting that the United project was a long term one for the American family.

A club spokesman repeated the stance and denied there was any truth in the interest from Qatar.

“There is nothing in this. The club have had no approach at all and it is not for sale,” said Communications director Phil Townsend.

The Gulf Times, Qatar’s best-selling newspaper, have quoted a source as saying, “Qatar looks like trying for United, although no one is saying anything officially.”

Making a bid to takeover United would be a further move into the soccer market which has become a clear intent of the emirates country.

Qatar was successful earlier this month with their controversial bid for the World Cup in 2022. It was a bid endorsed by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson who visited Dohar last month prior to FIFA’s announcement to back the country’s efforts.

Due to the heat in Qatar in the summer FIFA are now considering plans to switch the world tournament to the winter.

Last week the Qatar Foundation, which is the charity wing of the ruling family, caused a sensation in Spain when they agreed a £25m a season deal with Barcelona to sponsor the Catalan club’s shirts.

It was the first time Barca have ever had a shirt deal.

Any potential bid for United would be a drop in the ocean for Qatar Holdings whose assets are estimated at a whopping £40bn.

Despite another firm public rebuff from the Glazers there remains suspicion that the Florida-based owners have been preparing the ground for a sale.

Last month the controversial PIKs (Payment in Kind loans) that were incurring massive interest payments were unexpectedly paid off by the Glazer’s holding company Red Football Joint Venture Ltd.

The Glazer’s spokesman also announced in the wake of paying off the PIKs that he will be leaving the company in January.

City experts saw the £220m PIKS which wiped out the infamous loans as a sign that a takeover would be on the horizon.

Lindegaard on board

QUOTE
Recent Reds signing Anders Lindegaard has started training with his new team-mates at Carrington.

The 26 year-old's acquisition was announced on 27 November and while he must wait until January before he's eligible to play for the club, the Danish goalkeeper is now acclimatising to life at Carrington and getting to know his United colleagues.

Lindegaard arrives with plenty of games under his belt this year, after finishing fourth in the Norwegian league with previous club Aalesunds FK. Anders comes with high acclaim too, with former Tottenham goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt among his admirers.

“He has an impressive overall game – he’s got good hands, is confident with crosses and has good presence," said Thorstvedt, who's been able to watch Lindegaard while working as a pundit for Norwegian TV.

Another famous Norwegian, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has also praised the big Dane.

“It’s dangerous to say but he’s very good with his feet which reminds me of Edwin (van der Sar)," Solskjaer told us, prior to his departure.

"Lindegaard can pick out players and that’s one of the strengths of his game. I like that about him."

It remains to be seen whether United will sign anyone else in January but for now the squad heads into the New Year already with one promising addition.

Shades of Edwin

QUOTE
In Anders Lindegaard, United have signed a goalkeeper bearing a key hallmark of Edwin van der Sar, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian, who scouted Lindegaard during Aalesund’s Europa League trip to Motherwell earlier this season, says the Danish international has the required skills with the ball at his feet to fit in with United’s ethos of possession play.

“It’s dangerous to say, but he’s very good with his feet so he reminds me of Edwin, in the way he can play football,” Solskjaer told ManUtd.com.

“He can pick out players and that’s one of the strengths of his game. I like that about him. He didn’t have too many saves to make in the Motherwell game, but I’ve watched him on telly a few times for Denmark and he’s a very good shot-stopper.”

Solskjaer also spoke at length with Aalesund manager Kjetil Rehkdal, a fellow former Norwegian international, about Lindegaard’s suitability for a role at a major club like United.

“Kjetil’s a very good friend of mine, and he says he has the mentality to be a number one goalkeeper,” said Solskjaer. “Of course, that’s a good thing. And he’s Danish, so we have to cross our fingers that he’s like Peter Schmeichel!

“Plus I’m sure that with the coaching here he’ll improve. You see potentially a very, very good keeper, and with the coaching here he’ll be alright.”

Utd to offer Van der Sar a role

QUOTE
Manchester United could offer Edwin van der Sar a coaching role at Old Trafford if he retires at the end of the current campaign.

The goalkeeper has yet to officially state his intentions, but manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed last month that he expected the 40-year-old to bring an end to his playing career in May.

United are eager to keep Van der Sar, a 130-time Holland international and double winner of the UEFA Champions League, as part of the club's backroom staff if he does quit and he could act a possible mentor for new signing Anders Lindegaard.

"We're planning for it to be possibly Edwin's last season," said Ferguson ahead of Boxing Day's home match with Sunderland.

Deal

Asked about a possible coaching role for Van der Sar, the United boss said: "He'll be someone of interest in terms of his knowledge and experience, but we haven't discussed that yet."

Lindegaard has started training with United after a deal was agreed with Aalesund and the Denmark international will be officially registered with the Premier League leaders in January.

Van der Sar is expected to face Sunderland, but United will still be without Paul Scholes and John O'Shea due to respective groin and calf injuries, while Nemanja Vidic, Nani, Anderson and Michael Carrick have been suffering with illness.

"We've no injuries to report other than Scholes and O'Shea," said Ferguson. "Wes Brown picked up a little injury in the week but he should be OK.

Blessing

"The biggest thing we've been trying to do is clear up some 'flu, which we've had about the place over the last eight days."

Ferguson revealed that the weather-enforced postponement of last weekend's meeting with title rivals Chelsea was a blessing in disguise.

"On Sunday we wouldn't have had Vidic or Anderson, which was interesting," he said.

"Carrick and Nani have been down with it ('flu), but hopefully they'll be ready for Sunday (Boxing Day). They're all training now."

We meeting Chelsea @ Bridge tentatively on 1 March 2011 smile.gif

Title rivals to meet in March

QUOTE
Chelsea's heavyweight showdown against Manchester United has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 1st.

The match at Stamford Bridge was originally called off last Sunday due to freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall in West London.

The new date is subject to neither team being still involved in FA Cup fifth-round replay action.

However, if both teams are out of the competition, they could instead face each other on a Cup weekend.

The match will be televised live and will kick-off at 8pm local time.
