QUOTE(dariofoo @ Dec 17 2010, 01:04 PM)
Which movie are you talking about bro? As far as I know, without grain, the film would look sharper, and not blurry. Care to share?  nod.gif
*
The Sound Of Music had the grains washed out completely, but it looks great for a movie released in 1960's. There are no other examples i could remember of, if i do, i let you know. I'm more concerned on some Hindi titles which has grains washed out, but looks blurry and its too bright tongue.gif

QUOTE(valho @ Dec 17 2010, 01:18 PM)
not really, film like 300, Black Hawk Down are meant to be grainy but still retain the sharpness, the color, everything. As for Predator Ultimate Edition, it was heavily DNR, which totally removed certain detail and makes the movie smooth as hell.

You removed grain by applying DNR, DNR in turns do remove certain details and sometimes might cause it to be a bit blurry so I won't say movie without grain will be shaper coz it all depends on how excessive DNR is being apply. Well I am not an expect in this matter, just my humble opinion since I do a lot of photo editing and yeah it involve removing grain as well or making model look as smooth as marble biggrin.gif

True but,

I guess you haven't had chance to watch The Sound Of Music? Not giving you example based on 1 particular title tho, but personally i feel the PQ is excellent and the colors are restored in a very fine manner. The audio clarity is good as well.

I must say this is a film i've seen (probably) w/o grain present looks great on BD. Not an expert, but commenting based on experience.

I seriously hope you're joking, bro. Because I found one of your previous threads in Version 9.0 of this thread where you spoke of PQ & AQ:
Care to comment?  whistling.gif
*
i was just passing on my opinion to other enthusiasts that i found that particular title being definitely demo worthy material for those who want to show some friends the capabilities of the bluray format and in particular the dynamics of their home theaters...

From a personal point, my obsession with Picture Quality and Sound Quality of blurays simply stems from the fact that i feel that bluray is (still) a format that only a minority of people have bought into. Alot of it has to do with economics. Quite simply, the average person will not pay 70-150RM for an original bluray title given the widely availability of pirated movies we have access to. It makes bluray a still prestigious format of watching movies at home. Showing friends scenes from Planet Earth, Avatar or The Dark Knight, it fills me with great pride when their jaws drop and they comment "wow, your home theater is awesome!". Yes, admittedly its a show off thing and i am not ashamed to admit it because i am sure that most people here can be guilty of this pleasure as well smile.gif

Like so many of us here, I have invested alot of my hard earned moolah on equipment to realise "a 24 frame 1080p picture" and "a lossless audio" on a "90+ screen" at "bitrates of 25mb per sec" etc

I do admit that on many occasion i would appreciate PQ and AQ even over the actual fact that the movie was generally rubbish (Revenge of The Fallen anyone?) and this has become criteria to ALOT of my bluray purchases. Is this just being silly? perhaps.

i could write about references to particular scenes of a movie to talk about tonal balance, skin tones, palette drop outs, over saturation, pixilazation etc but then i don't think the general audience of this thread would show much interest.

Bro,

Appreciate your lengthy attempt at justifying your earlier comment.

Yes, I've seen pics of your home theater set up which you have posted and I'd say it's one of the best (if not the best) that I've seen in the thread so far. And for that I give you this - notworthy.gif

Why do you say that the general audience of this thread would not show much interest? A slight mention of film grain on 300 to Jenn77 and look at the response it has generated. I've learned quite a bit myself today. nod.gif

I believe the whole purpose of this thread is to share knowledge about BD titles, especially on PQ and AQ. Isn't that what separates BDs from DVDs and VCDs in the first place? nod.gif

Please write more references to "particular scenes of a movie to talk about tonal balance, skin tones, palette drop outs, over saturation, pixilazation etc".

I, for one, will be very well interested to read about it. nod.gif

cheers.gif

That's a classic, watched it on DVD last time

There's a book that teaches English to Japanese using dialogue from that movie

Upgrade to BD, it's worth it. Great PQ! [I am allowed to talk about PQ here right? tongue.gif ]

There's a really interesting special feature on the making of the movie as well.

My favourite war movies are Apocalypse Now, The Thin Red Line, Platoon and The Deer Hunter(can we consider that a ware movie?), Bridge on the River Kwai.... Full Metal Jacket is also a classic smile.gif

Having said that I have three war movies on BD, namely The Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down. The accolades for ryan and red line have been discussed at great lengths among Home theater fans all over the net... getting near perfect scores in all departments from many reviewers alike...

War is certainly fun... only when its not real and on big screen of course smile.gif

dariofoo i have not seen FMJ on BD yet but i can whole heartedly recommend ryan and redline on bluray

Well, The Deer Hunter can be consider a war drama instead of a war movie (wait, what am I talking about?!?)...

That is the first Vietnam war film ever came out. For me, it was pretty dark and I do enjoy it.

Anyone up for Patton or The Longest Day? hmm.gif

FMJ may not drop any jaws but it's a different perspective on war altogether, souped up and served Kubrick-style nod.gif

Saving Ryan's Privates, ooops, I meant Saving Private Ryan goes without saying. AQ is reference material right? I found The Thin Red Line and Platoon a bit too dreary for my liking.
