After price increase for Petrol, Gas and Sugar, guess what will be the next one?
Today's news papar:
quote
The federal Cabinet has agreed in principle to a revision of electricity tariff but has not
decided when it should take place, Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk
Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui said. There were many issues that the government needed to
address before a time could be set for the revision. (StarBiz)

Any potential upside will be tariff hikes. Other than that, only thing to look forward to is the yield %. Core holding for most unit trusts and mutual funds.

Whenever Tenaga needs to borrow money for expansion, gomen will allow a tariff hike, if not, Tenaga will have to borrow at high interest cost. The additional tariff hike is to generate the no. of times of interest cover to get a reasonable ratings.

Not much oomph in such counters.

Steady with a little bit of kick every now and then.

Fair value: RM10.45

THE Star reported yesterday that Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili as saying that consumers should brace themselves for a 10%-20% hike in electricity tariffs any time next year.

Based on the current average tariff rate of 33.5 sen per kilowatt hour (kw/h), this could mean that electricity rates could rise to 36.85 sen per kwh to 40.2 sen per kwh.

This rate hike seems to be above our own estimates of an average hike of 8.5%, assuming that the tariff increase is sufficient to offset the cost increase to RM43 per per million British thermal units (mmbtu) (from the current price of RM13.70 per mmbtu) for 250 million standard cu ft per day (mmscfd) of natural gas purchased above 1,000 mmscfd.

In our view, the tariff adjustments may exclude the low-income population while the middle-income group may be less affected than heavy users of electricity such as the industrial and commercial segments.

Currently, the average tariff for industrial users is 32.2 sen per kw/h, while commercial is 42 sen per kw/h and residential is 29.7 sen per kw/h. Hence, the industrial tariff, which was originally set at a lower rate to promote the country’s industrialisation, is already 24% below the commercial segment.

Electricity tariff review slightly positive for TNB, says RAM

RAM Ratings Services Bhd expects the electricity tariff review to have a slightly positive impact on Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB).

In a statement here today, RAM said the rate revision, effective Jan 1, 2014, would amply cover TNB's higher fuel costs and escalating operational expenses.

"We believe the implementation of an imbalance-cost-pass-through mechanism (ICPT), accompanied by the incentive-based regulation (IBR), should help preserve TNB's long-term financial profile.

"This reinforces our expectation of solid and consistent government support for TNB (rated AAA/stable/), given its critical role as national electricity company," it said.

RAM said the ICPT enabled TNB's fuel cost to be reviewed on a regular basis, while the IBR allowed its efficiency to be incorporated into the base tariff.

Tenaga Q1 earnings up 22.6% to RM1.735bil

Tenaga Nasional Bhd saw its earnings rise 22.6% to RM1.735bil in the first quarter ending Nov 30, 2013, from RM1.416bil in the corresponding quarter last year.

This was from a revenue of RM9.585bil, a 5% improvement from the same period the year before,

The company’s profit before tax, however, went down 20% to RM1.603bil from RM2.003bil.

Earnings per share were 30.74 sen – up 5.03 sen previously. Tenaga did not declare any dividend at the time of writing.

According to Tenaga, the quarter recorded sales of electricity of RM9.0775bil against RM8.8062bil previously.

“The improvement was mainly from sales of electricity in the Peninsula and Sabah, which recorded an increase of 3.3% and 1.6% respectively. The units sold also registered a growth of 2.6% in the Peninsula and 1.4% in Sabah as compared to the corresponding quarter,” it said.

Tenaga said operating profit in the quarter was 13.4% lower at RM1.5229bil from RM1.7578bil due to higher operating expenses incurred during the quarter, but that the higher earnings was due to “significant movement in taxation, being the result of reinvestment allowance incentive of RM201.7mil and the reversal of deferred taxation of RM188.7mil to reflect the change in the taxation rate from 25% to 24%.

Tariff hike to keep Tenaga 'out of the red', says CEO

Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) will have a stable performance this year as the electricity tariff hike is expected to keep the state-controlled utility "out of the red", CEO Datuk Seri Azman Mohd said.

Azman said the tariff hike took into account fuel and energy cost.

“We are not worse off with the new tariff,” he told reporters after TNB's Chinese New Year charity lunch today.

Also present was TNB director Datuk Chung Hon Cheong who highlighted that only 18% of proceeds from the tariff go to the firm. The balance is funnelled back to the government, Chung said.

TNB reviews its electricity rates every three years. The previous review was in 2011.

Today, Azman said TNB's decision to raise electricty rates would depend on the fuel cost which was governed by global market prices.

Tenaga, SIPP sign HOA for Track 4A Pasir Gudang power plant

Tenaga Nasional Bhd has signed a heads of agreement with SIPP Energy Sdn Bhd today for the proposed combined-cycle power plant known as Track 4A in Pasir Gudang, Johor.

According to Tenaga's filing with Bursa Malaysia, the power plant will have an estimated capacity of between 1,000 MW and 1,400 MW.

"[The agreement is] signifying the principal terms of the proposed joint venture with SIPP Energy Sdn Bhd, which will undertake to build, own and operate a power plant of approximately 1,000 MW - 1,400 MW on a land in Pasir Gudang, Johor," Tenaga said.

I dont understand the logic, utilities are necessities and increasing the tariff on regular basis is obviously not required if they are making tons of money.

"Tenaga Nasional Bhd has made its highest ever net profit of RM6.4 billion in financial year ended August 2014 which is an 18.5 per cent increase compared to RM5.4 billion last year.

Its chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie said the rise was attributed to a reduction in corporate tax which account 54 per cent of the RM1 billion increase as well as lower coal prices at US$83.6 a tonne.

Tenaga Nasional also invested a record high of RM10 billion in capital expenditure during the year to ensure a steady and reliable supply of electricity."

Consumers may see electricity tariffs revised downward in the second half of this year due lower coal prices and Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) lesser reliance on gas power plants.

According to a source, TNB along with other power-generation companies such as Malakoff Corp Bhd were now opting for higher coal usage for their power generation.

The source says that with lower crude oil and coal prices, as well as the shift of fuel mix gravitating from gas to coal, it would enable power-generation companies to operate and a lower production cost.

The reduced tariff are for users consuming 300kW/h and more monthly.

Tenaga skids to mid-December low on worries of high price for Edra assets
QUOTE
Tenaga’s purchase of 1MDB’s Edra power assets would allow Tenaga to cement its market leadership position (current power generation market share of 53%) in an eventual power pooling market and may be a positive development in the long run.

The key stumbling block was the pricing. If Tenaga was to pay RM16bil for Edra’s 3,190MW of generation capacity, “this to be expensive”.

Edra’s assets are worth RM11.6bil, based on current replacement market value (assumptions: gas-fired power plant replacement cost of RM2.3bil, coal-fired power plant replacement cost of RM6.7bil).

Given the wide pricing discrepancy of almost 40%, the deal may face a stumbling block in the near term

okay already found out..

TNB is offered a levelised tariff of not more than 26.67 sen per kWh, 1.34 sen higher than the levelised tariff that was awarded to 1MDB-Mitsui consortium at 25.33 sen.

a concession period of 25 years

to have an IRR of 7%-9%

The capital expenditure of the Project 3B power plant is estimated at RM12bil (compare RM11bil with 1MDB)

well how many electrical supply companies are there in Malaysia aside from sesco?

none kan. doubt tenaga will go into red

But TNB can't set the electricity tariffs itself. Government approval must be sought.
And GE is coming unsure.gif

I think I read somewhere where if the Government were to reduce tariffs all tenaga as to do is pass back to consumers by charging more for commercial areas or corporate companies. all in all they aren't stupid to let the politicians fuck them over because the politicians themselves have their crummy hands in Malaysian companies.

The price drop is due to institutional dumping, not fundamental.
In fact, I able to see your comment, you able to read mine, it was because of TNB working properly.

Wow big drop today. I bought some at 11.28

From peak just before GE at RM16. 34, that's about at 30% drop so far ohmy.gif No wonder KLCI so suck. PH gomen needs to think of more concrete measures for stock market n not just lip service.

I think one of the reason it's that it's not longer going to be a monopoly, they are opening up the energy sector. Plus their foreign investments are not doing very well

Check out last week's Edge magazine . Quite a good interview with the new CEO

Not gone case but maybe market thinks they deserve a lower multiple.

Just in
Tenaga 1Q net profit at 1.59b versus 2.12b a year earlier

Results not too bad, which is a relief. It's much better than last few quarters. Not as good as 1Q last year though, in terms of profit but still higher record revenue. The price action last few months makes ppl wonder if the terrible result for last quarter will be repeated but so far Overall look stable.

Hope new CEO can exceed last year profits and dividends.

Hi everyone.

This is an old post but hope to get some opinion in this counter.

I am holding this counter for 500 shares. My average price is RM11.132. Is it still worth to add more?

Why the share price is in downtrend even before covid-19?

there is heavy selling pressure right now.. but i will suggest to add more at around 10.80 if it drop further (since the ex-dividend is next week)

Thinking about tenaga, do you think they are still worth to invest in long term?

Green energy and still they also purchase a stake in power generator recently.

My guess is most probably. Since utility tends to be quite stable in earnings coz people and businesses will use electricity and TNB has pretty much the monopoly in the sector. Their investments in green energy is also a plus point, though I think some of it isn't doing so well

Only question is when to enter only. Price now seems cheap compared to a few years back

There are also news saying that they are going to seperate the retail and business segment. Not sure whether this is positive or negeative.

Besides, how do them compete with renewable energy company like solarvest, samainden (going to IPO). Tenaga does involve but not sure their strength in this area.

I thought they have done this already? This was a restructuring move done supposedly to improve efficiency. Not sure how it will work though.

TNB does have some renewable energy companies under it, especially overseas, as it has solar and wind plants in the UK and some other place in Europe. It is probably learning a thing or two about it while holding these investments.

I think they don't get themselves invovled so far. They got IPP with independent owners, but not much beyond that

EDIT: Just found out that TNB does have renewable energy plants in Malaysia, but not so big. It has two large scale solar power plants in the country. One in Sepang, Selangor and the other (recently built) is in Bukit Selambau, Kedah. Installed capacity quite small at 80MW only.

Red = good time to look into. Now is considered quite low compared to past 5 years average price. Let it drop further until below 10.

Now that CMCO has lifted in certain areas, more business will be operating soon which means more revenue coming in for Tenaga which means jeng jeng.

Just my 2 cent.

Wait for year end window dressing over then top up I suppose. It is pretty low price compared to previous years and business should be picking up anytime soon with mco cancelled and vaccine on the horizon.

I saw there is a new announcement today.

"On behalf of the Board of Directors of TNB, Maybank Investment Bank Berhad wishes to announce that TNB has today mutually agreed in writing with its wholly-owned subsidiary, TNB Retail Sdn. Bhd. (“TRSB”), to amend TNB’s obligations under the asset purchase agreement entered into between TNB and TRSB dated 6 November 2019 (“TRSB APA”). Pursuant to the amendments to the TRSB APA, any remaining components of TNB’s domestic electricity retail business (“Retail Business”) not transferred to TRSB on completion of the transfer of assets, liabilities and business undertakings related to TNB’s Retail Business to TRSB due to any reason whatsoever, including pending issuance of any approval or license from the relevant authority, shall be transferred by TNB to TRSB within a reasonable time as ascertained by TNB.

This announcement is dated 16 December 2020."

What will be the impact on TNB future business?

I doubt so, TNB is still a monopoly business in Malaysia.
They have been building their green energy portfolio through the development of LSS project.
And last year they acquired Vortex Solar who is one of the largest solar platforms in the UK so they do have market experience in the RE industry.

Last year DY was 9%. If we take out the special dividend, it would be 5%.
Assuming we go by a conservative 2-3% DY this year, its still higher than keeping in FD as there may be another OPR cut next week.
Tho I'm positive we may see a 5% DY this yr as well.

Last year most of them banks gave more than 5%.

This year because MCO - banks give loan moratorium to borrowers. Revenue slightly affected.

TNB doesn't profit more by selling more electricity.
Under the Revenue Cap regulatory framework set out by Suruhanjaya Tenaga, annual revenue is set for every year of the regulatory term and in the event that actual revenue is different to forecast revenue due to differences between actual and forecast electricity sales, prices are adjusted to make up for the revenue difference.
In other words, their revenue is actually capped by energy regulator.
You can read more from this article
https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/how-...ow-power-demand
Their green energy arm through its subsidiary, revenue is not cap however.

QUOTE
And TNB isn’t the company which installs the solar panel right?
Afaik they had a deal with MAHB last year through its subsidiary, GSPARX, for solar panel installation in the airport.

QUOTE
Other than solar energy, may I know what energy are they developing?
Hydroelectric, but its not something new. So far they're only venturing into solar energy.

PM announced that special electricity bill discount of 10% from January to March 2021 to six business sectors nationwide — hotel operators, theme parks, convention centers, shopping malls, local airline offices, travel agencies.

That is my opinion - the share price slides further yesterday.

My two cents:

1) high volume of disposal of shares by institutional investor like EPF, KWAP;
2) discount provided to customers (affect the profit etc)

For FY 2019, its 0.3+0.2+0.5. FY20 is 0.22 atm.
If you're looking for DY, divide by the current share price.

Wouldn't it be short term as the discount only or there is more to it 🤔

shorter or longer

its undeniable that electricity demand is growing yoy and with our power reserve margin to rise above 40%, we can estimate the incoming depreciation to be a steady foothold in the coming years since its unlikely for further PPA extension/issuance

as such, the revenue > profit flow should not be too hard to estimate

i think for us malaysian, we should be glad for such a company, IPP and blackout nonetheless lol

I buy for long term. I like monopolies. One day the economy will recover and electricity demand will roar back. Meanwhile, collect little by little while it is cheap.

New player with green energy solution will take over tenaga In very short future. That's the way the world is going right now. Tenaga infrastructure in Malaysia is totally different can cannot convert to green. Their success is the obstacle for them. Just like how Nokia failed.

but is that the way Malaysia is going?? Tenaga operates mostly in M'sia, so they only need to care where M'sia is going, no?

Soon pressure will push Malaysia to go in that direction and if tenaga not fast enough another player will just take over

green or not green, how much of a % do you think malaysia's power composition will be and what will be the impact to TNB ?

if the green infra is not connected to TNB infra, how do you think the green energy will be "sustainable" ?

Starting % is low but once the shift happen it will take over. Same like iPhone when it started in 2009 how many % ppl use smart phone? In just how many years 99% use smart phone? Technology is so rapid now we don't even count in years anymore.

Example now my company just attach the solar thing for the factory already 10% come from solar just simple rooftop thing.

The way I see it, politics in Malaysia will ensure Tenaga’s monopoly or near monopoly status. Tenaga already invested billions in our nations energy infra. They will dominate for decades to come.

Can see the down trend but how long will it be in the down trend? 👀

One and only monopoly to Malaysian electrical utilities. Should be good to buy and hold for long term. 👀

How many Tenaga shareholders actually know of how the company revenue has performed over the last 10 years?

Today I almost go in TNB big. But I guess maybe tomorrow. So mind to share what's your targeted price for TNB? ie lowest it can get within the next 6 months? For me I am buying for retirement, so I think now can be good price to go in. But I don't know to go in this counter or the other 2 Maybank and CIMB. Dividend wise seems TNB better but I think they only distribute twice per year unless got special dividend.

Buying for retirement. Assuming in 20 years time or so. Then just get batch by batch? Over time it will average out.

I am doing some DCA. Looking for some opportunities.

Checking their recent share price compared to now. Seems like a good time to go in.

Then again pass performance is not a guaranteed for future performances.

PUTRAJAYA (Bernama): Malaysia will receive a batch of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine a week before the first phase of the national Covid-19 immunisation plan begins on Feb 26, says Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.

The agreement with Pfizer (Malaysia) involves the procurement of 12,799,800 doses of the vaccine that will be supplied from the end of February, covering 20 per cent of Malaysia’s population, with two doses per person.

Dr Adham said the vaccine will be received in phases, with 148,000 doses for the first phase.

In addition, Dr Adham said the ministry has identified 55 vaccination storage locations throughout the country equipped with ultra-low temperature freezers (ULTF) as the vaccine requires to be kept at minus 70 degrees Celsius.

He added that the ministry is cooperating with Tenaga Nasional Bhd to ensure that there is no electricity supply disruption at the vaccine storage locations.

Regarding the 600 vaccination centres that will be open throughout the country, Dr Adham said seven personnel, including a medical officer and nurse, will be stationed at each vaccination centre.

600 vaccination centres .....can you imagine the power consumption? 😃😃

It depends on the price after ex date. Will it go down further or go up.

If you top up now and the price go down further after ex date then you will lose your initial investment by the drop amount.

I am reinvesting the dividends so doesn't matter to me in the long term.

Government mulls cutting rooftop solar prices to ease grid overload
By Dat Nguyen March 12, 2021 | 03:00 pm GMT+7
The Ministry of Industry and Trade is considering cutting the prices paid for rooftop solar by 30 percent to slow down its development amid concerns of grid overload.
It plans to cut the feed-in tariffs from 8.38 U.S. cents per kilowatt-hour to 5.2-5.8 cents, with lower prices for commercial projects and higher prices for households.
The ministry will also limit the power they can sell to the government to ease the pressure on the transmission lines.

Instead of spending your dividends.
When you get your dividend form tenaga. Then just buy back tenaga stocks or other stock as you see fit. 👀

Thus the term reinvest dividend means 'To invest again your dividends'.

I see, for example what if the price is RM11.40 after ex date by topping up at this amount will increase average price.

It is up to you to buy tenaga or other stocks. As for me I will continue to reinvest my dividend regardless of price for now.

Doing this for long term so don't mind about it 👍

Tenaga and Bat are good dividend stocks. Don't expect much capital appreciation in long term and don't bother too much with short term volatility

I wish there isn't that pesky min 1 lot rule in most IB. The dividends I receive from TNB is too little to reinvest due to TNB's relatively high price per share. I need to wait 2 or 3 years only then I can accumulate enough to reinvest

Yes I should sell at least half before ex date at 10.8+. This was my plan but unluckily I didn’t execute it. And after that keep dragging and end up sell at 10.20 when I need cash to buy other stocks.
Like I mentioned there are still months to go... I will just wait patiently.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd said earnings improved by more than a quarter in the second quarter, boosted by stronger electricity demand by industrial and commercial users.

Net profit in three month ended June 30 rose 26% to RM821.5mil, or 14.4 sen a share from RM653.3mil, or 11.5 sen a share made a year ago.

Sales increased 14% to RM12.44bil, TNB said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia today.

TNB has declared an interim dividend payout of 22 sen a share.

The higher revenue, TNB said, was mainly due to the increase in sales of electricity as a result of higher consumption from commercial and industrial customers as certain businesses are allowed to operate instead of full economic closure in the last corresponding period.

I had cut loss, something is clearly wrong that it keeps going downhill, when everything else (bluechips) has rebounded more or less.

With high commodity prices, not looking good for Tenaga then.

Read about electricity theft. This imo is the biggest threat to Tenaga.

Until technology evolve to be able to apprehend these thieves easily.. I would stay away:

Won't tick up for any foreseeable future bruh.

MCO wreck havoc, energy materials price soaring, Gov is still forcing tnb to give retail discount, and as with all energy sectors. Equipment investment is huge so yeah.

Well, TNB is still forced to carry the burden of retails cost and with soaring energy material prices.

It will likely be this low for the foreseeable future.

👀. Hopefully it won't bite me in the ass in the long term 😆

Personally I'm keeping onto mine until the losses on the share prices themselves have lessened 😂 IMO tho if willing to hold long term it's still a solid dividend stock, at least until gov decides to break the energy monopoly lol

TNB should speed up installing of solar panels on people's homes. Many people are interested but it is their marketing and execution that is lacking. Price also could make it cheaper.
This alone can bring in so much free power for Malaysia.
Excess power during daytime can be saved also for use during the night.

My father in law installed this on his home via TNB's contractor, will help offset some electricity bills while at the same time harvesting power for TNB side.

those interested can read more here:

In term of cost after taking account of solar panel, battery and maintenance cost, solar power is not cheaper than coal fired power.

Sun light is free, but solar panel cost a lot.
It is not a free power.

That's a reason why home solar panel adoption is slow.

The main hurdle is cost of installation and maintenance.

If sufficient market demand + supply of parts/materials have no shortage, then cost will eventually go down, especially with advancements in technology that will make more efficient, cheaper units.

Yep, cost and maintenance.

Tech is advancing but will not lower price yet as it requires special materials.

For now, lets just hope for fusion. Haha, will take another decade.

For dividends yes but for stock growth no 🤦‍♀️ because as long as oil price is high and govt is cutting their subsidies to TNB expect the share the go downhill now

The only catalyst is that their renewables division GSparx is ramping up and targeting industries but you need to take a look at their bottomline before deciding

I expect to go down until low 8 and mostly like govt funds will start buying from there if they have any dry powder after Raya and state elections

Oil price not high as last time already.
Where you get the news govt cutting their subsidies?
What i know is there will still be ICPT and govt target to remove electricity subsidy for big corporations.

Oil price hasn’t started to peak after this year cuts wait till June then you will know 🤦‍♀️ as airlines now calculating air surcharges for the summer season

ICPT will be start reducing particularly changing to targetted subsidies rather than the current widespread subsidies for households

You wait next month after the Cabinet meeting for that announcement come due in Mid May

8 months later from the last post....

Tenaga went up to 11.40.

but got hammered back to <11.00 yesterday due to lower qtr profits; 28sen dividend.

today, it recovered to 11.06.

unclear if the 6->8%SST hike for >600kwh users has any impact.

where will it go next?
