Because these Unis have the courses that heavily involve with ONG industry.
Yes, UM too. And UKM, USM.
*
Yeah, but those uni's are more favorable compared to other public universities that accredited and offer same courses like those formerly known Kolej Universiti that now known as Universiti Malaysia (eg UMP, UTEM, UNIMAP and etc.). I heard they are more hands-on, as they are doing extra credits with 60:40 hands-on to theory ratio which good for field and operation, IMHO.

Of course, specialized courses like petroleum engineering only offered in certain uni's.

Subsurface degree (PE/RE/Geology/Geoscience) are offered in selected universities only. The main RE/PE students locally comes from UTM. There is also a reason why people look at UTM as the first cut-off (in terms of selecting for interviews I mean), A LOT of seniors in the O&G industry came from UTM so there is a strong Alumni bias as well. UTM started their PE/RE program a long time ago and most seniors/managers would have come from UTM or knows someone who graduated from UTM.

Same thing for Geology degree from UM/UKM/USM.

Couldn't agree more.

may i know what's the difference between end-user/client and operator? i always thought those 2 are the same
*
In some cases, yes they are the same. But in my definition the Big 3 - PET, SHELL & EXXON are considered as end-user/client. Operator to me is like Talisman, Petrofec, HESS and etc. However, it also depends on situation or cases.

QUOTE(hj.pet @ Jan 31 2012, 11:12 PM)
i think what noruazumi was trying to say is service company instead of operator? i guess then u'll know the diff bween them already rite.
*
Yes. biggrin.gif

QUOTE(clon12 @ Jan 31 2012, 11:40 PM)
How did your contacts went through UTM? SPM>STPM>Degree?
Tends to lean to an advantage side if the uni i study in is accredited by bem straight right? But as I know as long as you study 4 years, you are qualified to join bem.
*
SPM > DEGREE (some MASTER in PE).
If your uni/course is not accredited, you can opt to take an exam with BEM. If you pass the exam, they will issue you the grad eng. cert.

if someone have no diploma or bachelor, only have spm..can he work on offshore? If yes..where can he find the vacancy?
*
Well, there are positions for General Workers and such but you need to apply to contractors/sub-contractors. I would recommend you to take welding course. Welders get higher pay as compared to General Workers - maybe RM25/hour as compared to RM8-RM15 for General Workers.

BTW, those who is interested in contract jobs (on project basis) do PM me. I know a friend who is in manpower sourcing who is looking for experienced people in various field.

Thanks for your advice! Besides the major operators, is there any other smaller-sized company who is willing to invest on Chemical Engineering graduates to transform them into Reservoir Engineers? However I believe that the competition is so tight, that I would have to grab whatever offer I am getting by the time I graduate..
*
It is kinda hard for me to understand your plan here. Since you are still studying (not sure which year), you might want to consider to change course now so that it suits your intention to be RE.

QUOTE(azraeil @ Feb 22 2012, 12:27 AM)
Not that I know of. The only company that I know for sure is PETRONAS.
*
Yes, PETRONAS. EE absorbed to PE. While PE absorbed to Supply Chain. That is what happening now. At least that is what I heard.

To be frank I'm very confused too. I'm a third year Chem Eng undergraduate and I have always wanted to join the oil and gas industry. A lot of seniors here seems to have a hard time joining this field and thus they would grab whatever opportunity came..but I can't do that. I am a thalassemia carrier and my body can't sustain too much of physical works. But I read that some of the positions have a lot of tough hands-on job and even physical requirement such as FE for Gyrodata. So I'm trying to see what areas should I try to avoid or get into so that I can prepare better..please enlighten me.
Thanks a lot for the info!

It always inspires me when I hear these sort of stories. Hats off to you.

Anyway, I dont know much about your medical condition but from your explanation, field works may not suits your condition. You might want to consider engineering & consulatation works. Most of the time you will be in the office doing designs. Once in a while u will travel to offshore for site survey works. There are places for Chem grads.

Study hard and wish u all the best.

Requirements:

    * Degree in Mechanical/ Chemical Engineering or equivalent. biggrin.gif
    * At least 3-5 years experience in the same capacity. sad.gif
    * Mature and Responsible. smile.gif
    * Fresh graduate with excellent academic results will be considered. cry.gif
*
Avoid companies that state these sort of requirements.

They cant make up their mind whether they want experienced personnel with 3-5 years or they want fresh grads. Or they want to pay experienced personnel with fresh grads salary.

Just stay away. smile.gif

seriously??so will they consider the fresh ones or not? hmm.gif
I don't know for certain about this particular case, but if you see most big companies have a clear requirement listed. There are quite significant gaps between 3-5 years experience people and fresh grads.

Dear All,

I have been working for around 1 and half year now and recently,my company just ask me how much do I want for my salary as they wanted to bond me with the company, let say for 2-3years bond.

I just want to ask all the experience person in this sub-section forum about what is my current value in term of RM because I didn't know about the current market. This is the summary of myself,in term of training and experience. For your information, this is my first company, previously I was Geotechnical Engineer for 6 months and I change my carreer towards Health and Safety field to obtain my Green Book Licence.

There's a reason why they want to bond you, if you get what I mean. wink.gif

I would say somewhere between RM5000-RM8000 would be OK.

Yeah, but he said he work in SI/soil sampling company. As far as I know SI company paid quite low. Besides his experience is only ~1 year. Maybe around RM3.5-4k I assume.
*
Yeah, I noticed that. But his company wants to bond him for no reason (i.e. training or etc.). That's why I think RM5000-RM8000 is a fair enough. Well, RM5000 should be OK. tongue.gif

QUOTE(affizzul @ Mar 5 2012, 03:34 PM)
Yup,true..offshore SI company paying is quite low although it is critical and there are not many major players in Msia (3-4 maybe).
So,I have to jump to other company to get better salary i guess, not by internal promotion. blink.gif

Even my previous assistant manager received low salary, and the company keep give him same amount of contract for 2years,he just simply walk away and didn't even bother to renew his contract. How sad  cry.gif
*
Well, if that is the case, you may want to consider moving to better opportunities. But unless you current companies can offer good working experience, then I would suggest you to stay a bit longer to gain the experience. Later on with the experience, more opportunities will come to you.
