From equipment supplier background? How is the working life like?
*
I'm in Electrical Generation/Distribution/Protection/Control downstream/upstream for 5 years now. Working life is good (but not in terms of salary & benefits - but not bad for offshore jobs). But if you are looking for knowledge, getting your hands dirty as vendor/contractor is the best and fastest way.

I would love to join BIG3-MY tho', but I feel I don't have what it takes yet even my clients from BIG3-MY and consultants gave me lots of encouragements. Maybe I should try this year. smile.gif

Yaaa... Without us electrical, you guys can't have 24VDC supplies. LOL~

Added on January 9, 2012, 5:40 pmBut I would say, electrical pretty much the easiest and most straight-forward branch. Those in mechanical, structure, process, instrumentation - respect u guys.

Added on January 9, 2012, 5:43 pmBTW, tips to fresh grads. Try to consider getting into consultant firms like Aker, Technip, Ranhill, RNZ, MMC, DPS and a few more. They pay you quite small at first - but after 3-5 years, you'll get more.

You can also look into fabrication yards like Kencana & MMHE too.

almost one month since i joined RWP now. very happy with the work and environment. n having a very nice boss who likes to share his knowledge is a big bonus biggrin.gif

and yeah, fresh grad pay is lower than operator companies, but from what i see, those senior engineers n up are getting much more than operators
*
Dont worry... When they start paying you by hours, you'll be happier. biggrin.gif

hi, i'm interested to join the Expediting, Procurement Department in Technip. I possess a Bachelor Degree in Electronic Commerce. Does the department only hire graduates with relevant qualifications? Very keen to join the company, am in the process of researching about the company & dept.

Thanks
*
Based on what I heard, Technip is the hardest to get in but maybe for fresh grads it will different case. Most top O&G firms only hire those with relevant qualifications, most of the time.

QUOTE(old_and_slow @ Jan 9 2012, 09:48 PM)
Hi guys, im a mechanical engineering student (1st year) at a local reputable ipts. Of course, this course is acceptable in O&G field but I would like to know more about what will I do when I graduate if I opt in O&G?
Could my job scope be very wide such that I will do something unrelated with my course?
And if I take MBA, does it make a difference? I heard it does tongue.gif
*
Depends on which area u which to join. As engineering point of view, MBA does not carry any weight. Unless we are talking about PMT or BD.

Whatever it is, engineering fresh grads, dont forget to register with BEM. smile.gif

to register with BEM, one need to have cert and transcript from Uni right? so does that mean, i need to wait until i convo? my Uni held convo once a year and that is only on November each yr.
*
Yes, you need transcript. Make sure your uni and course in BEM's approved list. Not sure if you can register now. Try give BEM a call. They are very assisting. Good luck.

ETAP for relay coordination and other things. I do know how to design - cable sizing, protection and etc. But I dont know how to do relay coordination. I want to do it just to learn it. If you already in consulting firm, your company prolly gonna send u for the course. Which firm u are working with, btw? Or just tell where ur office is. I can tell from there. Hehehe.

But i still didn't have the opportunity to run the relay coordination by using this software. But i know how to do it manually... biggrin.gif

Good day everyone,

I got a couple of questions here. Firstly, what is Petroleum Geoscience course and what does it deals with? Also, what is the prospect of a student who enrolled in the course to secure a job in oil and gas industry these days? Actually, I ask this on behalf of my cousin who will enrol in this course in UTP following the completion of his secondary school. I have a fair amount of knowledge about this course as I'm presently serving in the O&G industry, but still I want somebody out there who is currently in this field, add something to my basic knowledge.
Cheers guys
*
Prolly gonna end-up in drilling. "Galigali" is hiring more Petroleum Engineers compared to EE (especially UTP grads) these days.

Added on January 10, 2012, 12:59 pmHi azraeil. Since you are very experienced in this industry, I would like to know if Master Degree in Engineering will carry any weight or not. At the moment, I am considering M.Eng and M.Sc in Engineering. Any advice? Thank you, sir.

M. Eng is when u pursuing your master by coursework, almost similar to what u did during your degree, basically

M.Sc in Eng is your master by research.

IINM M.Eng min period of 1.5 year while M.Sc min of 1 year

Thanks. From what I've been told, M.Eng is still considered as under-grad programme in some countries/companies.

I can't provide any suggestion as I never took public transportation to KSB other than taxi. So, I would like to suggest that you ask your company to provide transportation (daily rent). Or if you know someone working in KSB, try to ask for a ride. biggrin.gif

One question guys...
does an external UK degree affect my ong career? Is it better to have a local cert or an external UK cert?
*
Like others said, your interview will determine your chance. But your cert will determine whether they will call you for an interview or not. Based on what I've been told, some companies like exxon only accepts certain certs.

So in your opinion, whether it is an external cert or local one doesnt matter in enrolling into ong industry? I am aware of the accrediation... But from what my gf's father told me it doesnt matter in ong as you dont need to be an IR.
*
Local or oversea doesn't really matter much. As long as your cert is from accredited universities, it should be fine. However, there is a "unwritten" policy that they will only consider fresh grads from certain universities. I think if you are a grad from UTP (obviously), UTM & UM, you should be fine. I mention these 3 uni's because my friends/contacts are from these uni's.

QUOTE(ICDeadPeople @ Jan 31 2012, 08:13 AM)
Well, I have to look for other subjects too. But than again, you dont want to hire a geologist who got C for sedimentology, do you?
UTM is one of the uni that we look into for RE/PE candidates.

And UM too, right? smile.gif

it does matter if as consultant especially at refinery, pls read carefully what word i bolded previously. it depends on which stage from platform fabrication, e&p, refinery until the end products one is using. your gf's father is right if at operator/some contractors side (they will have NDT, API certification, follow ASME, ASTM, etc. specialist certification to inspect/cert at the various stage). it is about teamwork.
*
Yes, agree.

It depends on which "side" you want to work with. Options are:
1. End-user/Client
2. Consultant/Engineering
3. Operator
4. Fabricator
5. Contractor
6. Sub-Contractor

You prolly need go academic results from accredited & favorable uni's if you are applying for jobs for the first 3. The rest, it doesn't really matter. This only applies for fresh grad position.
