Hi, I applied for audit associate. any advice?

Thanks

Be honest on your expectation. This is not going to be a finacially rewarding job in your first few years but eventually once settled in, you will get to love it. The super peak is very busy but you get to relax eventually.. No checking on what time you got into office, so a bit flexi. smile.gif

I have no issues with the ICAEW programme, and in my personal opinion they are a more prestigious programme compared to ACCA.

But I have a huge HUGE HUUUUGEEEE problem with the CFAB - > ICAEW interns, based on the few interns that I've come across in my life in PwC.

1. Most have HORRIBLE Microsoft excel skills.
2. Most have no idea what the hell is going on. (don't even have a decent idea how an invoice looks like ><)
3. Most don't really have any 'heart' to really learn, or to build up their knowledge of the working world.
4. Most are super young (18/19 years old) and frankly, at that age, you're just an immature kid, despite what you may think of yourself.

Whereas compared to my other interns who are.. 22/23 y/o from USM/UM/UUM or TAR etc.. those are much better adjusted and show better knack of what's going on.

SO yeah.
*
Looks like some CFAB intern got off to a bad start with you. But is the problem with CFAB students or generally fresh graduates?

hey, anyone know how is it like to work under the tax department of big 4?does it require you to work long hours too, like the audit department?

Added on March 3, 2012, 1:49 ami am very regretful for turning down an offer from one of the big4. i applied for a permanent position 5 months prior to my graduation. i went through all the assessment tests, essay writing, and got shortlisted for the interview. few days later i got a call from them saying that they'd want to accept me as an intern for my final semester. however, i hv already secured a place for the internship programme in a small medium accounting firm back in my hometown and have completed all the documentation procedures required by my uni. i was given ard 2 weeks to decide. eventually, i called back and accepted the offer but 1 week later, i don't knw till this day, what went through my mind, i suddenly felt stressed and uneasy thinking that there were a lot of procedures to be done(including finding a place to stay which was what bothering me the most) in short period of time if i were to accept the offer. perhaps the stress came fr the fact that it was already 2-3 weeks away fr my final exam and i didn't want to be bothered by those things. i felt as if i were not ready and called back to reject the offer. and now, i have just graduated fr my degree and looking back with regrets. im thinking of reapplying but fear of failure/rejection this time and it might make me even more regretful. what i could say is i am a really bad decision maker.

Added on March 3, 2012, 1:53 amis it ok for a fresh graduate to apply for an internship position in the big4?

EY needs ppl in their IT audit...they are really lacking in staff for tht department. You might want to try to re-apply for another intake coz EY's orientation is over yesterday.

For tax department, it really depends on which division u r in...personal tax, international tax, transaction tax. So it really depends on how bz tht division is

If I'm not mistaken, you want to apply to work in the Big 4 as an intern and then after that you hope that they would turn you into a permenant staff?

Usually, it's really rare for a fresh graduate to apply for internship and it's really not worth it....The amount of salary that you would get and the same workload as a permenant staff...you might want to re-think of getting an internship than a permenant one. If you fear that you might be rejected, then I guess you would never be able to move forward in your career. Sometimes, it's just the risk you have to take to gain bigger opportunity. Like they say "If you never try, then you'll never know".

Hi guys,
wanna seek for the advise.
A brief introduce myself.
I hold a degree of Accounting n Finance from University of London external studies(study in Singapore Institute of Management).
n currently i am taking ACCA last 3 papers.
So I will be graduating in Jun.
and wanna start looking for a job.
but i am not sure about the job scope of this 2 positions.

As i know, the job scope of audit associate is more on vouching for newbie.
But, how about tax associate?
Doing tax computation? tax planning? or audit tax?
I personally feel that audit associate is more "famous" than tax associate,
I mean more ppl looking for audit associate position than tax associate.
Does this mean that audit associate has more opportunities in future?

I really need someone to share more and give me some opinions.
And, i would like to know the future opportunities of this 2 positions.
Thanks in advance

Erm, the problem is there for most new associates/interns, but for if we're looking specifically at interns, CFAB interns are generally the worse. I've gotten bad experiences from 2 CFAB interns (both during peak), and have heard of similar complaints from my peers.

That said, I have heard of good ones. But the general outlook and perception of CFAB interns for me, is that they suck.

Hahaha, I gave bad ratings to people who got off badly with me. If you're not good enough, sorry to say, you're not good enough. I'll save my fellow colleagues from the suffering of living/working with a half-past-six staff that can't even get basic things right. If you've been a senior and been through the suffering of fixing your teammates' incomplete work, you'll know what it feels like.

Sure, in a perfect environment, everyone would be given a chance to learn and fix themselves, but during peak and we're short of seniors as it is, and you give me attitude and do half past six work for me? Sorry. YHe's gonna get it. And trust me, I'll tell the person who the intern will be working for next that the intern needs 'special' attention.

A friend of mine recently want to apply EY thru their website. And it state that they want the 2ndary and college degree, and all the curriculum certs.

But a friend of mine who just got accepted said that he just send the resume in and SPM cert, and no curriculum certs. Any advice? Curriculum certs may be a lot to submit. Or is it like they said, show during interview?

Added on March 5, 2012, 12:23 amAnd the website did not specify whether to send photo of applicant or not. Should he?

I can't help out as I did not apply for that firm actually. So yeah.

I asked that question before to HR. They will tell you it's pointless, just go and apply straight for the permanent position.

Tax associates do tax computations generally. Sometimes there are ad-hoc work like giving advise, tax provisioning (helping auditors determine the amount of tax to disclose in the stat accounts) and special projects.

More people are hired as audit associates due to the higher turnover rates and the vast amount of staffs needed. In tax, the departments are smaller (30 people compared to audit 100-200++) and turnover is not as high as audit. Not to mention people consider tax as boring laugh.gif

Before you consider that audit has more opportunities, ask yourself whether you can stand sleeping 3-4 hours a day during peak period. Vouching is also boring. If you dislike both audit and tax, just move on to do something else.

Hi,

Some introduction. I am an IT staff with 5 yrs experience as an System Engineer with 2 years experience in information security, risk assessment, vulnerability assessment, vulnerability scanning and etc. I have just passed my CISA exam last December, pending certification.

Do you know if there is any opening suitable for my experience and do they take anyone without audit experiences? What salary range do you think is applicable for my experience?

Thanks in advance for any comment.

Yea, I am considering to work in singapore too
but i think the chance to get into big four sg is quite slim bcos they prefer the local u students n they seldom recruit foreigner for A1 position due to employment pass problem.
So, I will try to apply medium size audit firm too.
My grad is second lower only.
Last time i got apply big 4 jb n they asked me to go for an interview.
They offer me the full time audit assistant position but i rejected bcos i decided to go study ACCA full time.
So will this affect?

Unless u apply senior level. But heard that there is so called "down grad" system if u transfer from Malaysia big 4 to Singapore big 4.
