but if i get other brand, i may not get that high value to trade in my d3000.... hmmm....

Then it all depends. whether you want to keep your value of D3000 but get a so-so Nikon 1 or top up some to get a camera which can perform as good as your D3000 is totally up to you. =)

If your budget can be a bit higher, RM1900 should get you a Sony NEX-C3 with decent image quality.
If that's your only budget, you should be able to grab a Olympus XZ-1 with RM1200~1300. Both will give you excellent image quality. Sony NEX-C3 can deliver nice video but XZ-1's video is so-so only (But still considered HD).

Undecided to buy compact or entry level DSLR. Budget Rm2500. Purpose : to take my kids photos. Want fast capturing speed (do you call that shuttle speed?) as kids can't stay still.

Was actually thinking of canon 600d since it won best entry level DSLR but not sure if i want to lug a DSLR out with the kids - bulky and heavy. Compact may be more practical as smaller and lighter.

Please help recommend a compact camera and DSLR suitable for my purpose. Thanks. smile.gif

Sony nex5n might be one of the good choices. it has 10 frame per second,Shooting photo of you active children can be done easily . Its is small and as compact as compact camera and light. you will tend to bring it anywhere bcuz of it size. However please have a look in camera shop before deciding as this is my personal preference. As for pricing guideline, rm2199 for single zoom lens(18-55) and rm2500-rm2650 for dual kit(a 16mm prime lens & a 18-55 zoom lens )

Like sifu Zhao, I will recommend Sony for DSLR. Although I myself am highly interested in Olympus and Pentax as well. But Sony is my main choice.

But if for mirrorless sysmtem, both NEX and m43 will be my recommendation. biggrin.gif

Just checking real quick here, anyone knows what to check for when purchasing a used DSLR?

What signs of damage/wear and tear/ and stuff like that for me to look out for?

1.Try shake around see got sound anot.
2.See got any mark /scratch that is very visible(if yes,maybe dropped b4).
3.Open up battery cover and check is there any water stain(if there is any sticker by manufacture)
4.Try pressing each button, and turn the wheel(if there is any).
5.Try removing the lens and check is there any mark on the sensor.
6.Shoot a over-expose picture to see if there any problem.
7.Keep playing with it.(see owner reaction, if he looks scared ,maybe there is something he is hiding.)
8.Repeat steps 1-7 for the lulz.
9.Enjoy yourself wink.gif TEEHEE!

LOL, to be honest i never thought of getting SONY. It was always Nikkon or Canon! Have to seriously look into Sony cameras since both you and Ryou sifu recommends Sony. Is it user friendly since my experience previously were all with Canon and Nikkon compact cameras!

Sony is always a brand ignored when one is choosing. Years ago, I was also considered only Canon and Nikon. Only after shortly I encountered Sony and learned that it has the highest Cost:Price ratio. And the whole system is complete enough from entry level to professional fullframe with wide range of lenses.

User friendly or not, it's quite personal. But I believe it's not very difficult to learn. In fact, I think Nikon has the most complicated layout. smile.gif

if budget suits, might get 1 to play for fun! 2nd hand unit is also OK as long as it is working and no damage.

Canon EOS 1100D or Nikon D3100 should be affordable. Both are around RM1699 with kit lens and basic accessories. If really want cheaper, get the Sony a290, but the functions are indeed, really basic.

If you can have a better budget, get the Sony a35 and you will have almost the best in entry level.
