i asked around the price from the retail said is around 1.5k-1.8k~ they also not sure.

if 1.8k. i add on another few hundred, I can get a DSLR?

Andrew

Will recommend you Olympus XZ-1. Nothing much to say, just winning S100 in almost every aspects (especially aperture and the image quality). Price is nicer also.

Only Canon EOS1100D and Nikon D3100 will meet your requirement since you prefer C/N. I'm a Sony user though and Sony has a better price/performance ratio in longer period in my opinion.

Your Location: Kuching, Sarawak.
Preferable brand : Nikon / Canon
Type of photography u want to do : It's actually for my course assignments (Diploma In Graphic Design ),
Personal like shooting some wild life, nature, landscape.
Any specific models in mind? : Currently target for Nikon D3100
Any specific features u want? : User friendly smile.gif

I'm did some research about DSLR but no really know all of them, so far only Nikon D3100 is my choice.
Here I ask for some advice from you guys, Is this DSLR worth for what I needed so far? Should I increase some budget for D5100 or others DSLR for what I want to do?
Is Nikon D3100 enough for me?

Thank You very much

D3100 and D5100 won't give you much difference in my opinion. Go for the cheaper one and spend your budget in flashgun or lenses.

How about a Sigma 10-20mm f3.5, Nikon 16-85mm and a Tamron 70-300 VC USD?
They end up approximately RM6000+/-

Or replace a the Sigma with a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 for a better wide? Since you listed landscape is the type of photography you do the most.

If can, ask for the shutter count. But it only gives you a guide since in most situation, shutter count doesn't guarantee the lifespan of the camera. But go for the lesser if possible.

Cosmetic appearance is also another key to see whether has it been dropped.

Warranty. Do note that unfilled warranty does not always work. There used to be cases that unfilled warranty card wasn't not accepted. Ask for a printscreen of the warranty registration website so as to see how long the warranty last.

Lastly ,ask for other accessories.

Then I would recommend a Nikkor 16-85mm for your purpose. =)

In my humble opinion, most budgeted cameras perform almost the same. But I would also recommend a Sony W510. Maybe because I love the sweep panorama? Any A2200 is also a very good choice. smile.gif

I need advice.

Canon EOS 600D 18-55mm or Sony A35Y 18-55 + 55-200MM? Which is better?
*
It depends. Sony is not a popular brand. However A35 is also a very good camera.

If your budget allows, go for Sony A65 and it will outperform other competitors from Canon to Nikon in the range. (Canon 600D and Nikon D5100.)

Overall Sony is the better choice if you are keen in video shooting as it can AF during video recording. Canon can't.

yes, there are times where I'll shoot HD or FullHD video. SLT able to AF on the fly right? So it beats Canon in this category?

A65 is kind of out of my budget range sad.gif

What's the disadvantage for A35 other than the LCD?
*
Although not the best in the SLT family, but A35's AF capability beats every Canon.

About the disadvantages, erm...maybe its mentality problem. I don't like A35 being a downgrade to its older brother A33 (although only the LCD becomes normal again). Multi angle LCD is very important to me since I always take photos in lower angle.

By the way most lenses produce noise when doing Autofocus. So it's also essential to invest in a SSM lens. rclxms.gif

If have extra money, why not? smile.gif

But only go for one of them if you are really buying. Since they both offer almost the same thing. However, A35 outperforms a bit in Video and Dynamic Range which is important for landscape. rclxms.gif

How's the a3200is compared with the s95? Any big difference in the image quality?
*
A3200 is way too far to be compared to S95.
However if you ask the best compacts to deliver quality of DSLR. Fuji X100/X10, and the Olympus XZ-1 are among the best. S95/S100 are not as good as those I mentioned just now but are still considered OK.

Nikon v1 with twin lens or Sony next 5n with twin lens? Which is better?

Sony NEX-5n outperforms Nikon 1 system seriously in image quality. Even Olympus's PEN or Lumix's GF will win Nikon 1 in quality. In my opinion, Nikon 1 is quite an idiotic invention with only good AF speed, but terrible image quality.

Currently Sony NEX-5n seems to deliver the best dynamic range which is a key to landscape. But I'm also curious in how the coming GX-1 can perform.

However, the advantage of having a Oly or Pana is that their lenses are interchangeable. You are able to mount a Lumix Leica on a PEN or a M.Zuiko Lens on GX series. I'm always amazed by the built quality of the new Zuiko lens which is fully metal. Anyway, if you are using a NEX-5n, you can also easily mount any of the Pana/Lumix lenses with a cheap adapter. Which I think is the best combo.

You won't be able to get Nikon 1 with that price, and LX5 and P7100 are way too old.

Olympus XZ-1 is the best to suit the price range. Built-in ND filter is best when the light is too bright and the bright f1.8 aperture is nice to have when it comes to night.

In fact, Sony's SLT is optimized for video shooting.

Nikon D3100 will probably have almost the same image quality with A35 but won't grant you continuous AF. Nikon 1 may give you what you want in AF but the image quality sucks. In fact, I feel that Nikon thought their customers will be easily satisfied by how the small sensor perform. But experts and advanced shooters are not meant to be fooled.

Yes. Choose from Sony NEX-5n, Panasonic Lumix GX1(Coming Soon) or Olympus EP-3.
3 of the above have their own advantages and unique features, do some research on them if you are interested.

Nikon 1 is just way too not worthy to get with that overpriced tag and so-so image quality.

But will the Nikon J1 perform on par with the D3100 in terms of video recording?
*
No. the ironic fact that small sensor size will never (or at least extremely difficult) to beat APS-C sized sensor on a DSLR.

The nearest is Sony NEX which in fact are also APS-C sized sensor. Panasonic and Olympus with Micro 4/3 are said to be optimised for digital (in fact this is the main point when they promote Four Third system), and they also produce decent image quality superior than many compacts. Nikon 1 is only a bit bigger than normal compacts.

Lumix with Leica branded are OK as well, but be noted that Leica doesn't mean lens from leica, it's just designed by leica.

Hmm, true.. But since most of the time I'll using for traveling, compactness/portability will be a main point too. It seems E-PL3 or E-PM1 will be more suitable and price wise is more of a value, right? Oly images and performance won't be much lower as compared to Pana and Sony?

If between E-PL3 & E-PM1, which would you suggest? Only difference will be the movable LCD, but is it that useful?
*
I guess Oly and Pana will give you nearly the same image quality as their sensor size are the same. If for compactness, Sony NEX-5n or Olympus E-PL3 should suit you best, otherwise Pana GF3 is not very bulky as well.

But for performance, I believe Oly will offer you faster AF focus. I've seen an experienced street photographer capturing the expressions of the people by using his Olympu Pen.

jz noticed there's a difference between the image stability system between S4150(nikon) and A3200is(canon). any idea?
*
In compact, they are almost the same. Some are sensor-based and some are lens-based. I believe that they won't be any noticeable difference. If you require a faster shutter, ISO is your another concerns. smile.gif

I personally recommend you to get the Sony NEX-5n. It simply allows you to choose from more lenses with adapters. When you can have these lenses, its APS-C sensor will grant you superior image quality.

usually RM1600+. You can get in most shops in lowyat. Some will offer you RM1500+ but are grey sets. Since you have a budget of RM2000, should get along with a 50mm f1.8. If you are buying with the camera, the lens might get a discount.
