So, 'Andy Carroll: the future of England'. How does that sound?
Obviously, it’s good that people are talking about me in that way, but I need to take it all with a pinch of salt and keep on doing what I’m doing. I know the talk won’t get me anywhere. It’s down to me doing well for Newcastle United.

Your England debut seemed to go well. You got a great response from the crowd…
Yeah, I was chuffed with the appreciation the supporters gave me when I was subbed. Hopefully, I can win more caps and give them some goals to celebrate.

Who was the first person you told when you found out you were going to play for your country?
To be honest, people were telling me! It was on the TV before I knew. My parents were first to let me know. They gave me a call and that’s how I found out. They were delighted, just like I was.

What is the main difference between your life now and your life as it was 12 months ago?
Getting recognised, probably. When I go out on the town, I get my name shouted everywhere I go.

Do you ever wish you were a bit smaller, so you could disguise yourself more easily?
Ha ha! Yeah, if I was a little bit shorter, I wouldn’t get recognised as much, although then I wouldn’t be the same player, would I? I guess it has something to do with my hair as well. If it was shorter, maybe I wouldn’t stand out.

Speaking of hair, how long have you been growing yours? And what have you got more stick for: the braids or the ponytail?
I’ve been growing it for about two years now. I get some stick for it, but I don’t care! And I prefer the ponytail over the braids. I only got the braids done to wind up Joey Barton! It was a stupid bet – he said I wouldn’t do it, so I wanted to prove him wrong.

Do people make too much of the 'old-fashioned centre-forward' and the Newcastle No 9 shirt?
People will always have their own opinions on how I play, but I don’t know if I’m what you’d call an 'old-fashioned centre-forward'. I’d like to think I’ve got a fair bit more to my game than just being a big man up front. But to be wearing the No 9 for my home team like Alan Shearer is great. I had a season ticket and sat in the stands at St James’ watching him when I was a kid. He was my hero.

Did you ever get his autograph?
I did, yeah! It’s back at my house in a book.

Which other Premier League striker do you wish you could be more like?
I really like watching Didier Drogba. He’s strong, he gets up well in the air and he’s a fantastic player. I like to watch other strikers because it helps me to improve my own game.

Newcastle is said to be Britain’s best night out. Where would you take ZOO on the Toon?
I’d take you to Kevin Nolan’s house! Ha ha! No, I’d take you to Tup Tup Palace for a night out. I’m sure we’d have a good time there!

Speaking of which, you’ve been involved in the odd scrape. Are you really the bad boy that you’re portrayed as?
No, it’s all talk really. I’m a nice lad. I’ve just been in the wars a little!

You’re currently living with club captain Kevin Nolan. What’s he like as a landlord?
Ha ha! We have had a few arguments about cleaning up after food and stuff – like whose turn it was – but it’s all OK. We’re good mates, so we’re fine.

When you two are at home, do you ever have any gaming sessions?
Yeah, we play FIFA 11, although I beat him all the time, which he doesn’t like. He’s actually made his little daughter play against him to try and get his confidence up!

So you’re not even letting your landlord win a few games? He might even let you off some of the rent…

Report: Toon want £1.5m for Barton

Newcastle are understood to be prepared to let Joey Barton leave St James' Park for just £1.5million during the January transfer window.

The Magpies are believed by Sky Sports to be willing to listen to offers for the midfield dynamo, with Barton entering the final 18 months of his contract.

The news has alerted a host of clubs to Barton's possible availability when the transfer window reopens next month.

West Ham and Aston Villa are both thought to be leading the chase for the former Manchester City star as they look to bolster their midfield options.

Barton has arguably been Newcastle's stand-out performer this season with a number of eye-catching displays leading to calls for a return to the international scene with England.

The 28-year-old has chipped in with two goals and four assists in the Premier League, with the midfielder providing much of the ammunition for Andy Carroll's goals this term.

Despite his impressive form this season, Newcastle are thought to be willing to cash in on Barton in a bid to trim their wage bill and bring in some funds.
