One of the good things bout being a dealer, you got the chance to try lots of stuff.

Pity your customer would receive used goods lol.

But I guess he/she would tolerate some "quality control". tongue.gif

today i went and try the ENGL amp at the guitar store

sad to say, it was boring. the big stack models had good gain i hand it, very sure a super strat would do wonders on it. but the dynamics on both amps are kinda meh.
*
Heh, mate. Why don't you just go for a Peavey 6505+ or XXX? Bogner? Uberschall?

if ur on a budget  but want tube sound, try the HT Dual out. I got mine from music master a month ago, am loving it! Next thing on my list is a transparent sounding solid state amp to do the blasting.

I'm saving up for one biggrin.gif

HT Dual ftw!

For the massive 10-15k price tag, would it be better to get sumthing like a mesa boogie rather than a engl? Have never tested an engl b4 meself.
*
Mmmhmm smile.gif I think a Mesa Triple would be a great pick. Mark IV even?

QUOTE(+3kk! @ Jan 24 2011, 10:04 PM)
tubes

cons

-fragile
-needs huge huge amounts of maintenance (bias, cleaning the tubes)
-expensive, a 4watt tube amp with nothing on it needs more money than a roland micro cube
-warmups, tube amps need like a short time to get warm
-cannot off and on, if yuo want to on it keep it on for a while, when off it keep it off for a while. (thus the standby)
-heat, tubeamps can overheat causing the tubes to crack which causes buzz
-tubes have a limited lifespan, while its easy to replace them you will have to put money in to fix it.
-exploding lulz, well not that bad lar. tubes are like bulbs and they can break
pros

- gain, tubes are known for gain. period - they control gain far better, clips better and if anything tube amps are TEH gain machines.
thats why strangely you see no gain channel on some tube amps and yet people love it for the gain (ie: early Marshall JMP)

- tube amps handle high volumes better, they can drink power like water.

-unlike solid states, tubeamps get better with higher volumes (cranking the amp)

-natural overdrive, every rock album in history was built upon this.

- dynamics, because they handle power better tube amps produce very good dynamic range. add more axe volume = overdrive, reduce volume on your axe = clean. play harder = overdrive, softer = clean. (buddy guy uses it )

- tube warmness

-tube rollin, dont like your tone? lets get soem NOS ELETROHARMONIX TO BOOT!!!!

-TEH SwEET SPOT, every tube amp has this, at one point when the volume gets high enough the amp makes epic sweet tone.

in simple terms, tubes are like the cranky wife, she needs heaps of lovin, but she is sensitive to all your needs. she knows all the right buttons and a slight touch she will squeal in delight. owh and importantly she loves things hard and loud.

THE SS

cons

- does not handle high volume well, as they dont clip gradually but rather roughly so gain kicks in like a slap in the face. if you want to test this get your practice amp, put the volume on high and you notice after a certain point the amp becomes terrible. this is the direct opposite of tubes

- dynamics, because Solid state gets worse as volume goes up you cannot increase volume on your axe to make a slight overdrive nor can you pick harder for it. when a SS is clean, its clean all teh way.

- gain, they dont handle gain well almost all teh distortion on amps you hear by big names are made from tubes driven loud. there are  a few users of Solid states like dimebag, but majority are tube lovers, angus young, buddy guy, etc etc

-tone, in general sense most people love tube tone. some call it snake oil (made worse with the recent hybrids) but tube purists will stand by that SS amps are not as good.

- unlike tube amps, when a solid state breaks - it breaks. tube amp might need a change in the tubes

pros

- reliable, they cannot die! SERIOUS!
- clarity, well thats what they do very well. things are said to be clearer on a solid state
- no/little maintenance at all! all components nearly last forever!
- you dont need to warm it up, in audio listening equipment you dont need to wait 20 mins till it gets sweet lol.

in summery, solid states are reliable, she is like a good non-complaining wife. she plays what she is asked but not perfect, she wont amaze you but she wont fail you when you need her the most. lol

Correct me if I'm wrong, but what Line 6 did was acquire Bogner's tube technology for their tube line ups. The issue is that the older models are just tubed for the pre-amp stage, only the spider 112 MkII onwards are valved, this one with 2x12AX7 pre and 2x6L6 power amp. But for an amp, I'm wondering if that is enough saturation.  Has anybody used one?

*shrugs* The sound samples are great. biggrin.gif

Blackstar HT-1 not in Msia yet. Go down SG, buy 5 or 6, bring back up, confirm profit.

Generally tubes should last quite a while, I'd say a couple of years at least. The HT Dual runs a Sovtek 12AX7, which doesn't give very smooth high gains. I recently swapped for a TungSol, now sounds veli nais.

Oooh slash stp?!  rclxm9.gif
*
Hmmm.... So it guzzles as much from a single tube as a tube amp would guzzle from one of its tubes?

QUOTE(Lucidus @ Jan 28 2011, 09:35 PM)
Maybe switch to a Marshall MG10 or those entry level frontman?
*
No.... The MG10 can't give good cleans lah xD

What's the point of upgrading my amp to a similar level ones? Seriously, playing my charvel into an entry level amp is disgraceful.. Felt guilty about it :/

I quote: Most guitarists don't mind playing a midlevel guitar into a great amp, but never a great guitar into a crap amp. tongue.gif

Hmm... I've never heard of Falcon before.

QUOTE(+3kk! @ Jan 29 2011, 04:13 PM)
unfortunately even teh 100watt MG iw ould consider as an entry, unless something significantly different in them lar. but the amp specs should be the same all across the models, its just more fucntion and louder. how the amp is made should be the same, if not they wont call it the MG
*
Agreed. Even 100 watt MG considered entry level.

However, you do have "professional amps" that are say, 15 watts too. An amp doesn't have to be a huge one, or have high wattage to be a "professional amp".

I was at a gig yesterday and saw a guy playing a Caparison guitar. A few frenz were drooling over it, is it a winrar? Apparently chris amott use it, listen to the sound like ok only la.
*
Quite a few people use it. A guy from Killswitch uses it, Joel I think, Chris Amott uses it, IA from Freak Kitchen uses Caparison too, the Symphony X guy too. Michael Romeo?

Maybe it was his setup? Or his fingers?

Think of them as higher end... say.. Jacksons? *shrugs* The guy who founded it was a Jackson employee I think.
